He took a yoke of oxen and cut them in pieces and sent them throughout all the territory of Israel by the hand of the messengers, saying, “Whoever does not come out after Saul and Samuel, so shall it be done to his oxen!” Then the dread of the Lord fell upon the people, and they came out as one man.

And he took a yoke of oxen, and hewed them in pieces, and sent them throughout all the coasts of Israel by the hands of messengers, saying, Whosoever cometh not forth after Saul and after Samuel, so shall it be done unto his oxen. And the fear of the LORD fell on the people, and they came out with one consent.

Er schlachtete zwei seiner Rinder und zerstückelte sie. Dann schickte er Boten mit den Fleischstücken in alle Gebiete Israels und ließ überall ausrichten: »Wer nicht mit Saul und Samuel gegen die Ammoniter in den Krieg zieht, dessen Rinder sollen genauso zerstückelt werden!« Als das Volk merkte, dass der HERR durch Saul sprach, erschrak es und meldete sich geschlossen zum Kampf.

Er ergriff ein Gespann Rinder und hieb es in Stücke, schickte die Stücke durch Boten in das ganze Gebiet von Israel und ließ sagen: Wer nicht hinter Saul und Samuel in den Kampf zieht, dessen Rindern soll es ebenso gehen. Da fiel der Schrecken des HERRN auf das ganze Volk und sie rückten aus wie ein Mann.
