Sarah’s Death and Burial
Sarah lived one hundred and twenty-seven years; these were the years of the life of Sarah.

Sara starb in Kirjat-Arba, das ist Hebron, im Land Kanaan. Abraham kam, um die Totenklage für Sara zu halten und sie zu beweinen.
So Sarah died in Kirjath Arba (that is, Hebron) in the land of Canaan, and Abraham came to mourn for Sarah and to weep for her.
Danach stand Abraham auf, ging von seiner Toten weg und redete mit den Hetitern. Er sagte:
Then Abraham stood up from before his dead, and spoke to the sons of Heth, saying,
Fremder und Beisasse bin ich unter euch. Gebt mir ein Grab bei euch als Eigentum, damit ich meine Tote hinausbringen und begraben kann!
“I am a foreigner and a visitor among you. Give me property for a burial place among you, that I may bury my dead out of my sight.”
Hör uns an, mein Herr! Du bist ein Gottesfürst in unserer Mitte. In der vornehmsten unserer Grabstätten begrabe deine Tote! Keiner von uns wird dir seine Grabstätte versagen und deiner Toten das Begräbnis verweigern.
Da stand Abraham auf, verneigte sich tief vor dem Volk des Landes, vor den Hetitern,
Then Abraham stood up and bowed himself to the people of the land, the sons of Heth.
und redete mit ihnen und sagte: Wenn es in eurem Sinne ist, dass ich meine Tote hinausbringe und begrabe, dann hört mich an und setzt euch für mich ein bei Efron, dem Sohn Zohars!
Er soll mir die Höhle von Machpela geben, die ihm gehört, am Rand seines Feldes. Zum vollen Geldwert soll er sie mir geben als Grabstätte und Eigentum mitten unter euch.
that he may give me the cave of Machpelah which he has, which is at the end of his field. Let him give it to me at the full price, as property for a burial place among you.”
Efron saß mitten unter den Hetitern. Der Hetiter Efron antwortete Abraham, sodass es die Hetiter, alle, die zum Tor seiner Stadt Zutritt hatten, hören konnten:
Now Ephron dwelt among the sons of Heth; and Ephron the Hittite answered Abraham in the presence of the sons of Heth, all who entered at the gate of his city, saying,
Nein, mein Herr, höre mich an: Ich gebe dir das Feld und die Höhle darauf gebe ich dir; in Gegenwart der Söhne meines Volkes gebe ich sie dir. Begrab deine Tote!
“No, my lord, hear me: I give you the field and the cave that is in it; I give it to you in the presence of the sons of my people. I give it to you. Bury your dead!”
Da verneigte sich Abraham tief vor dem Volk des Landes
Then Abraham bowed himself down before the people of the land;
und sagte zu Efron, sodass es das Volk des Landes hören konnte: Ach, möchtest du mich nur anhören: Ich zahle das Geld für das Feld. Nimm es von mir an, damit ich dort meine Tote begrabe!
and he spoke to Ephron in the hearing of the people of the land, saying, “If you will give it, please hear me. I will give you money for the field; take it from me and I will bury my dead there.”
Mein Herr, höre mich an! Land im Wert von vierhundert Silberstücken, was bedeutet das schon unter uns? Begrab nur deine Tote!
“My lord, listen to me; the land is worth four hundred shekels of silver. What is that between you and me? So bury your dead.”
Abraham hörte auf Efron und wog dem Efron den Geldbetrag ab, den er in Gegenwart der Hetiter genannt hatte, vierhundert Silberstücke zum üblichen Handelswert.
And Abraham listened to Ephron; and Abraham weighed out the silver for Ephron which he had named in the hearing of the sons of Heth, four hundred shekels of silver, currency of the merchants.
So ging das Feld Efrons in Machpela gegenüber von Mamre, das Feld mit der Höhle darauf und mit allen Bäumen auf dem Feld in seiner ganzen Ausdehnung ringsum,
So the field of Ephron which was in Machpelah, which was before Mamre, the field and the cave which was in it, and all the trees that were in the field, which were within all the surrounding borders, were deeded
an Abraham über, als ein erworbenes Eigentum, in Gegenwart der Hetiter, aller, die zum Tor seiner Stadt Zutritt hatten.
to Abraham as a possession in the presence of the sons of Heth, before all who went in at the gate of his city.
Dann begrub Abraham seine Frau Sara in der Höhle des Grundstücks von Machpela gegenüber von Mamre, das jetzt Hebron heißt, im Land Kanaan.
And after this, Abraham buried Sarah his wife in the cave of the field of Machpelah, before Mamre (that is, Hebron) in the land of Canaan.
