Die ganze Gemeinde der Israeliten zog von der Wüste Sin weiter, einen Tagesmarsch nach dem anderen, wie es der HERR jeweils bestimmte. In Refidim schlugen sie ihr Lager auf, aber das Volk hatte kein Wasser zu trinken.
Water in the Rock
Then all the congregation of the sons of Israel journeyed by stages from the wilderness of Sin, according to the command of the LORD, and camped at Rephidim, and there was no water for the people to drink.

Da geriet es mit Mose in Streit und sagte: Gebt uns Wasser zu trinken! Mose antwortete ihnen: Was streitet ihr mit mir? Warum stellt ihr den HERRN auf die Probe?
Therefore the people quarreled with Moses and said, “Give us water that we may drink.” And Moses said to them, “Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you test the LORD?”
Das Volk dürstete dort nach Wasser und murrte gegen Mose. Sie sagten: Wozu hast du uns überhaupt aus Ägypten heraufgeführt, um mich und meine Söhne und mein Vieh vor Durst sterben zu lassen?
But the people thirsted there for water; and they grumbled against Moses and said, “Why, now, have you brought us up from Egypt, to kill us and our children and our livestock with thirst?”
Mose schrie zum HERRN: Was soll ich mit diesem Volk anfangen? Es fehlt nur wenig und sie steinigen mich.
So Moses cried out to the LORD, saying, “What shall I do to this people? A little more and they will stone me.”
Der HERR antwortete Mose: Geh am Volk vorbei und nimm einige von den Ältesten Israels mit; nimm auch den Stab in die Hand, mit dem du auf den Nil geschlagen hast, und geh!
Then the LORD said to Moses, “Pass before the people and take with you some of the elders of Israel; and take in your hand your staff with which you struck the Nile, and go.
Siehe, dort drüben auf dem Felsen am Horeb werde ich vor dir stehen. Dann schlag an den Felsen! Es wird Wasser herauskommen und das Volk kann trinken. Das tat Mose vor den Augen der Ältesten Israels.
“Behold, I will stand before you there on the rock at Horeb; and you shall strike the rock, and water will come out of it, that the people may drink.” And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel.
Den Ort nannte er Massa und Meriba, Probe und Streit, weil die Israeliten gehadert und den HERRN auf die Probe gestellt hatten, indem sie sagten: Ist der HERR in unserer Mitte oder nicht?
He named the place Massah and Meribah because of the quarrel of the sons of Israel, and because they tested the LORD, saying, “Is the LORD among us, or not?”
Und Amalek kam und suchte in Refidim den Kampf mit Israel.
Amalek Fought
Then Amalek came and fought against Israel at Rephidim.
Da sagte Mose zu Josua: Wähl uns Männer aus und zieh in den Kampf gegen Amalek! Ich selbst werde mich morgen mit dem Gottesstab in meiner Hand auf den Gipfel des Hügels stellen.
So Moses said to Joshua, “Choose men for us and go out, fight against Amalek. Tomorrow I will station myself on the top of the hill with the staff of God in my hand.”
Josua tat, was ihm Mose aufgetragen hatte, und kämpfte gegen Amalek, während Mose, Aaron und Hur auf den Gipfel des Hügels stiegen.
Joshua did as Moses told him, and fought against Amalek; and Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill.
Solange Mose seine Hand erhoben hielt, war Israel stärker; sooft er aber die Hand sinken ließ, war Amalek stärker.
So it came about when Moses held his hand up, that Israel prevailed, and when he let his hand down, Amalek prevailed.
Als dem Mose die Hände schwer wurden, holten sie einen Steinbrocken, schoben den unter ihn und er setzte sich darauf. Aaron und Hur stützten seine Arme, der eine rechts, der andere links, sodass seine Hände erhoben blieben, bis die Sonne unterging.
But Moses’ hands were heavy. Then they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it; and Aaron and Hur supported his hands, one on one side and one on the other. Thus his hands were steady until the sun set.
So schwächte Josua Amalek und sein Heer mit scharfem Schwert.
So Joshua overwhelmed Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword.
Da sprach der HERR zu Mose: Schreibe das zum Gedächtnis in ein Buch und präge es Josua ein! Denn ich will die Erinnerung an Amalek unter dem Himmel austilgen.
Then the LORD said to Moses, “Write this in a book as a memorial and recite it to Joshua, that I will utterly blot out the memory of Amalek from under heaven.”
Mose baute einen Altar und gab ihm den Namen: Der HERR ist mein Feldzeichen.
Moses built an altar and named it The LORD is My Banner;
