Alle Truppenführer, die im Feld waren, sie und ihre Männer, hörten, dass der König von Babel Gedalja, den Sohn Ahikams, als Statthalter im Land eingesetzt und ihm Männer, Frauen und Kinder sowie jenen Teil der armen Bevölkerung unterstellt habe, der nicht nach Babel geführt worden war.

Da nun die Hauptleute, so auf dem Felde sich hielten, samt ihren Leuten erfuhren, daß der König zu Babel hatte Gedalja, den Sohn Ahikams, über das Land gesetzt und über die Männer und Weiber, Kinder und die Geringen im Lande, welche nicht gen Babel geführt waren,

Im Landesinneren hielten sich immer noch judäische Offiziere mit ihren Einheiten versteckt. Sie hörten, dass der König von Babylonien Gedalja, den Sohn von Ahikam, zum Statthalter von Juda ernannt hatte. Ihm war die Verantwortung übertragen worden für die Männer, Frauen und Kinder aus der armen Landbevölkerung, die nicht in die Verbannung nach Babylonien ziehen mussten.
