Da sagte Josua zum Volk: Ihr seid nicht imstande, dem HERRN zu dienen, denn er ist ein heiliger Gott, ein eifersüchtiger Gott; er wird euch eure Frevel und eure Sünden nicht verzeihen.

Josua sprach zum Volk: Ihr könnt dem HERRN nicht dienen; denn er ist ein heiliger Gott, ein eifriger Gott, der eurer Übertretungen und Sünden nicht schonen wird.

Josua erwiderte: »Meint ihr wirklich, ihr könnt dem HERRN dienen? Täuscht euch nicht: Er ist ein heiliger und leidenschaftlicher Gott, der keinen neben sich duldet. Er wird euch nicht vergeben, wenn ihr ihm untreu werdet und gegen ihn sündigt!
