Als Abram 99 Jahre alt war, erschien ihm der HERR und sagte zu ihm: »Ich bin der allmächtige Gott. Geh deinen Weg mit mir und lebe so, wie es in meinen Augen recht ist.
Abraham and the Covenant of Circumcision
Now when Abram was ninety-nine years old, the LORD appeared to Abram and said to him,
“I am God Almighty;
Walk before Me, and be blameless.
Now when Abram was ninety-nine years old, the LORD appeared to Abram and said to him,
“I am God Almighty;
Walk before Me, and be blameless.
Ich will zu meinem Bund mit dir stehen und dir unzählbar viele Nachkommen schenken.«
“I will establish My covenant between Me and you,
And I will multiply you exceedingly.”
And I will multiply you exceedingly.”
Da warf sich Abram zu Boden, und Gott sprach weiter zu ihm:
Abram fell on his face, and God talked with him, saying,
»Ich verspreche dir: Du wirst zum Stammvater vieler Völker werden. Darum sollst du von nun an nicht mehr Abram (›erhabener Vater‹) heißen, sondern Abraham (›Vater der Völkermenge‹).
“As for Me, behold, My covenant is with you,
And you will be the father of a multitude of nations.
And you will be the father of a multitude of nations.
Ich werde dir so viele Nachkommen geben, dass zahlreiche Völker daraus entstehen — sogar Könige sollen von dir abstammen!
“I will make you exceedingly fruitful, and I will make nations of you, and kings will come forth from you.
Dieser Bund gilt für alle Zeiten, für dich und für deine Nachkommen. Es ist ein Versprechen, das niemals gebrochen wird: Ich bin dein Gott und der Gott deiner Nachkommen,
“I will establish My covenant between Me and you and your descendants after you throughout their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and to your descendants after you.
und ich gebe euch das ganze Land Kanaan, wo ihr bisher nur Fremde seid. Ihr werdet es für immer besitzen, und ich werde euer Gott sein.
“I will give to you and to your descendants after you, the land of your sojournings, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession; and I will be their God.”
Doch auch du, Abraham, musst dich bei unserem Bund zu etwas verpflichten, und deine Nachkommen sollen sich ebenfalls daran halten:
God said further to Abraham, “Now as for you, you shall keep My covenant, you and your descendants after you throughout their generations.
Alle Männer unter euch sollen an der Vorhaut ihres Gliedes beschnitten werden — als Zeichen dafür, dass ich mit euch einen Bund geschlossen habe und dass ihr treu dazu steht.
“This is My covenant, which you shall keep, between Me and you and your descendants after you: every male among you shall be circumcised.
Bei allen männlichen Neugeborenen soll die Beschneidung am achten Tag durchgeführt werden. Das gilt auch für eure Sklaven, egal ob sie bei euch geboren wurden oder ob ihr sie aus dem Ausland gekauft habt. So tragt ihr an eurem Körper das Zeichen des Bundes, der niemals aufhören wird.
“And every male among you who is eight days old shall be circumcised throughout your generations, a servant who is born in the house or who is bought with money from any foreigner, who is not of your descendants.
Wer sich nicht beschneiden lassen will, der hat sein Leben verwirkt. Er darf nicht länger zum Volk gehören, denn er hat den Bund mit mir gebrochen.«
“But an uncircumcised male who is not circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin, that person shall be cut off from his people; he has broken My covenant.”
Dann sagte Gott: »Auch deine Frau soll einen anderen Namen erhalten: Nenne sie nicht mehr Sarai, denn von nun an heißt sie Sara (›Fürstin‹).
Then God said to Abraham, “As for Sarai your wife, you shall not call her name Sarai, but Sarah shall be her name.
Ich werde sie reich beschenken; auch sie wird einen Sohn von dir empfangen. Mein Segen bedeutet noch mehr: Sie soll die Stammmutter zahlreicher Völker werden, und Könige werden von ihr abstammen!«
“I will bless her, and indeed I will give you a son by her. Then I will bless her, and she shall be a mother of nations; kings of peoples will come from her.”
Da warf Abraham sich erneut zu Boden — aber im Stillen lachte er in sich hinein. Er dachte: »Wie kann ich mit 100 Jahren noch einen Sohn zeugen? Und Sara ist schon 90, wie kann sie da noch Mutter werden?«
Then Abraham fell on his face and laughed, and said in his heart, “Will a child be born to a man one hundred years old? And will Sarah, who is ninety years old, bear a child?”
Laut sagte er dann zu Gott: »Wenn nur Ismael am Leben bleibt! Lass doch ihn deinen Segen erfahren!«
And Abraham said to God, “Oh that Ishmael might live before You!”
»Nein, so habe ich es nicht gemeint«, entgegnete Gott, »sondern deine Frau Sara wird einen Sohn bekommen! Gib ihm den Namen Isaak (›Gelächter‹)! Mit ihm werde ich meinen Bund aufrechterhalten, und für seine Nachkommen wird der Bund ebenfalls gelten. In alle Ewigkeit bleibt er bestehen.
But God said, “No, but Sarah your wife will bear you a son, and you shall call his name Isaac; and I will establish My covenant with him for an everlasting covenant for his descendants after him.
Aber auch deine Bitte für Ismael will ich erfüllen. Ja, ich werde ihn segnen und ihm unzählige Nachkommen schenken. Zwölf Fürsten sollen von ihm abstammen, und er wird der Stammvater eines großen Volkes werden.
“As for Ishmael, I have heard you; behold, I will bless him, and will make him fruitful and will multiply him exceedingly. He shall become the father of twelve princes, and I will make him a great nation.
Trotzdem werde ich meinen Bund mit Isaak schließen; nächstes Jahr um diese Zeit wird Sara Mutter werden.«
“But My covenant I will establish with Isaac, whom Sarah will bear to you at this season next year.”
Nachdem Gott dies gesagt hatte, erhob er sich zum Himmel.
When He finished talking with him, God went up from Abraham.
Kurz darauf, noch am selben Tag, beschnitt Abraham seinen Sohn Ismael und alle männlichen Sklaven, die bei ihm geboren oder von Ausländern gekauft worden waren — so wie Gott es ihm aufgetragen hatte.
Then Abraham took Ishmael his son, and all the servants who were born in his house and all who were bought with his money, every male among the men of Abraham’s household, and circumcised the flesh of their foreskin in the very same day, as God had said to him.
Auch Abraham selbst ließ sich beschneiden. Er war zu dem Zeitpunkt 99 Jahre alt
Now Abraham was ninety-nine years old when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin.
und Ismael 13 Jahre.
And Ishmael his son was thirteen years old when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin.
Beide wurden am selben Tag beschnitten,
In the very same day Abraham was circumcised, and Ishmael his son.
