Diese Worte gaben David einen Stich ins Herz. Er stieg hinauf ins Turmzimmer des Stadttors und weinte. Dabei klagte er ununterbrochen: »Mein Sohn Absalom! Mein Sohn, mein Sohn, ach, Absalom! Wäre ich doch an deiner Stelle gestorben! Ach, Absalom, mein Sohn, mein Sohn!«
Joab Reproves David’s Lament
Then it was told Joab, “Behold, the king is weeping and mourns for Absalom.”
Then it was told Joab, “Behold, the king is weeping and mourns for Absalom.”
Jemand meldete Joab: »Der König weint und trauert um Absalom.«
The victory that day was turned to mourning for all the people, for the people heard it said that day, “The king is grieved for his son.”
Auch bei den Soldaten hatte sich schnell herumgesprochen, dass David über den Tod seines Sohnes verzweifelt war. Ihre Freude über den Sieg war auf einmal wie weggeblasen, Trauer und Niedergeschlagenheit machten sich breit.
So the people went by stealth into the city that day, as people who are humiliated steal away when they flee in battle.

The king covered his face and cried out with a loud voice, “O my son Absalom, O Absalom, my son, my son!”

Then Joab came into the house to the king and said, “Today you have covered with shame the faces of all your servants, who today have saved your life and the lives of your sons and daughters, the lives of your wives, and the lives of your concubines,
Da ging Joab zu ihm und wies ihn zurecht: »Deine Soldaten haben dir heute das Leben gerettet, und nicht nur dir, sondern auch deinen Söhnen und Töchtern, deinen Frauen und Nebenfrauen. Und was ist der Dank? Du benimmst dich so, dass sie sich für ihre große Tat nur schämen können!
by loving those who hate you, and by hating those who love you. For you have shown today that princes and servants are nothing to you; for I know this day that if Absalom were alive and all of us were dead today, then you would be pleased.
Du liebst alle, die dich hassen, und hasst alle, die dich lieben. Deine Heerführer und Soldaten bedeuten dir offenbar überhaupt nichts. Es hätte dir nichts ausgemacht, wenn wir heute alle in der Schlacht gefallen wären — Hauptsache, Absalom wäre noch am Leben!
“Now therefore arise, go out and speak kindly to your servants, for I swear by the LORD, if you do not go out, surely not a man will pass the night with you, and this will be worse for you than all the evil that has come upon you from your youth until now.”
Du musst dich jetzt zusammennehmen und zu deinen Männern hinausgehen, um sie wieder zu ermutigen. Sonst laufen sie dir alle noch heute Nacht davon. Das schwöre ich dir, so wahr der HERR lebt! Etwas Schlimmeres könnte dir gar nicht passieren. Es wäre schrecklicher als alles, was du bisher erleiden musstest.«
David Restored as King
So the king arose and sat in the gate. When they told all the people, saying, “Behold, the king is sitting in the gate,” then all the people came before the king.
Now Israel had fled, each to his tent.
Da stand David auf und ging hinunter zum Stadttor. Seinen Soldaten wurde gemeldet, dass der König wieder dort saß. Sofort kamen sie und versammelten sich vor ihm. Inzwischen waren die Israeliten in ihre Heimatorte geflohen.
All the people were quarreling throughout all the tribes of Israel, saying, “The king delivered us from the hand of our enemies and saved us from the hand of the Philistines, but now he has fled out of the land from Absalom.
In allen Stämmen des Landes warfen sie sich gegenseitig vor: »Wir sind schuld daran, dass König David vor Absalom fliehen und das Gebiet Juda verlassen musste. Dabei hat er uns doch immer von unseren Feinden befreit, und auch die Macht der Philister hat er gebrochen.
“However, Absalom, whom we anointed over us, has died in battle. Now then, why are you silent about bringing the king back?”
Absalom, den wir zum neuen König gekrönt haben, ist in der Schlacht gefallen. Warum unternimmt niemand etwas, um David zurückzuholen?«
Then King David sent to Zadok and Abiathar the priests, saying, “Speak to the elders of Judah, saying, ‘Why are you the last to bring the king back to his house, since the word of all Israel has come to the king, even to his house?
David sandte die beiden Priester Zadok und Abjatar zu den Sippenoberhäuptern des Stammes Juda. Sie sollten ihnen im Namen des Königs ausrichten: »Wollt ihr die Letzten sein, die mich, euren König, wieder in seinen Palast zurückholen? Die Israeliten haben dies schon lange geplant, wie ich gehört habe.
‘You are my brothers; you are my bone and my flesh. Why then should you be the last to bring back the king?’
Ihr seid doch meine Stammesbrüder und viel näher mit mir verwandt. Warum kommt ihr ihnen nicht zuvor?«
“Say to Amasa, ‘Are you not my bone and my flesh? May God do so to me, and more also, if you will not be commander of the army before me continually in place of Joab.’”
Amasa, dem Heerführer von Absalom, sollten die beiden Priester von David ausrichten: »Ich schwöre dir, dass ich dich heute an Joabs Stelle zu meinem obersten Heerführer ernenne. Das sollst du dein Leben lang bleiben, denn du bist mein Neffe. Gott soll mich hart bestrafen, wenn ich mein Versprechen nicht halte.«
Thus he turned the hearts of all the men of Judah as one man, so that they sent word to the king, saying, “Return, you and all your servants.”
So gelang es David, die Unterstützung der Judäer zurückzugewinnen. Geschlossen stellten sie sich hinter ihn und ließen ihm sagen: »Komm mit deinem Gefolge wieder nach Jerusalem!«
The king then returned and came as far as the Jordan. And Judah came to Gilgal in order to go to meet the king, to bring the king across the Jordan.
Da trat David den Rückweg an und erreichte den Jordan. Die Männer aus dem Stamm Juda kamen ihm auf der anderen Seite bis nach Gilgal entgegen, um ihn über den Fluss zu geleiten.
Then Shimei the son of Gera, the Benjamite who was from Bahurim, hurried and came down with the men of Judah to meet King David.
Zur gleichen Zeit lief auch der Benjaminiter Schimi, ein Sohn von Gera aus Bahurim, zum Jordan, um David dort zu treffen.
There were a thousand men of Benjamin with him, with Ziba the servant of the house of Saul, and his fifteen sons and his twenty servants with him; and they rushed to the Jordan before the king.
Tausend Mann vom Stamm Benjamin waren bei ihm. Auch Ziba, Sauls früherer Diener, hatte sich mit seinen fünfzehn Söhnen und zwanzig Knechten dem Zug angeschlossen. Sie erreichten den Jordan vor dem König.
Then they kept crossing the ford to bring over the king’s household, and to do what was good in his sight. And Shimei the son of Gera fell down before the king as he was about to cross the Jordan.
Dann brachten sie ein Boot an das gegenüberliegende Ufer, um David mit seinem Gefolge über den Fluss zu setzen und ihm ihren Dienst anzubieten. Als David den Jordan überqueren wollte, ging Schimi zu ihm, warf sich vor ihm zu Boden
So he said to the king, “Let not my lord consider me guilty, nor remember what your servant did wrong on the day when my lord the king came out from Jerusalem, so that the king would take it to heart.
und flehte: »Mein König, vergib mir, was ich dir angetan habe, als du Jerusalem verlassen musstest. Bitte rechne mir diese große Schuld nicht an.
“For your servant knows that I have sinned; therefore behold, I have come today, the first of all the house of Joseph to go down to meet my lord the king.”
Ich weiß, dass es ein schwerer Fehler war. Aber bedenke, mein König: Ich bin heute als Erster aus den Nordstämmen hierhergelaufen, um dich zu empfangen.«
But Abishai the son of Zeruiah said, “Should not Shimei be put to death for this, because he cursed the LORD’S anointed?”
Da mischte sich Davids Neffe Abischai ein: »Schimi verdient den Tod! Er hat den König, den der HERR auserwählt hat, aufs Übelste beschimpft.«
David then said, “What have I to do with you, O sons of Zeruiah, that you should this day be an adversary to me? Should any man be put to death in Israel today? For do I not know that I am king over Israel today?”
Doch David wies ihn zurecht: »Von dir und deinem Bruder lasse ich mir nichts vorschreiben! Ihr könnt mich nicht zu so einer Tat verleiten. Von jetzt an bin ich wieder König, darum soll heute kein Israelit hingerichtet werden!«
The king said to Shimei, “You shall not die.” Thus the king swore to him.
Dann wandte der König sich an Schimi und versprach ihm: »Du musst nicht sterben, ich gebe dir mein Wort!«
Then Mephibosheth the son of Saul came down to meet the king; and he had neither cared for his feet, nor trimmed his mustache, nor washed his clothes, from the day the king departed until the day he came home in peace.
Auch Sauls Enkel Mefi-Boschet kam dem König entgegen. Seit David aus Jerusalem fliehen musste, hatte er als Zeichen der Trauer seine Füße nicht mehr gewaschen, den Bart nicht mehr gepflegt und keine frischen Kleider mehr angezogen. So wollte er warten, bis David wohlbehalten zurückkehren würde.
It was when he came from Jerusalem to meet the king, that the king said to him, “Why did you not go with me, Mephibosheth?”
Als er nun dem König entgegenkam, fragte dieser ihn: »Warum bist du nicht mit mir gekommen, Mefi-Boschet?«
So he answered, “O my lord, the king, my servant deceived me; for your servant said, ‘I will saddle a donkey for myself that I may ride on it and go with the king,’ because your servant is lame.
Er antwortete: »Mein König, dafür ist mein Knecht Ziba verantwortlich, denn er hat mich betrogen! Ich wollte dich begleiten und dafür meinen Esel satteln lassen, weil ich ja nicht mehr richtig laufen kann.
“Moreover, he has slandered your servant to my lord the king; but my lord the king is like the angel of God, therefore do what is good in your sight.
Doch Ziba ist zu dir gegangen und hat mich bei dir verleumdet. Du aber bist klug und weise wie ein Engel Gottes. Tu mit mir, was du für richtig hältst!
“For all my father’s household was nothing but dead men before my lord the king; yet you set your servant among those who ate at your own table. What right do I have yet that I should complain anymore to the king?”
Die Familie meines Großvaters hatte den Tod verdient nach allem, was sie dir angetan hat. Trotzdem hast du mich, deinen ergebenen Diener, als Gast an deinem Tisch essen lassen. Da kann ich es nicht wagen, noch mehr von dir zu erwarten!«
So the king said to him, “Why do you still speak of your affairs? I have decided, ‘You and Ziba shall divide the land.’”
»Reden wir nicht mehr davon«, sagte David. »Ziba und du, ihr sollt euch Sauls Besitz teilen.«
Mephibosheth said to the king, “Let him even take it all, since my lord the king has come safely to his own house.”
»Ziba kann auch alles haben«, erwiderte Mefi-Boschet, »das Wichtigste für mich ist, dass der König heute unversehrt in seinen Palast zurückkehrt.«
Now Barzillai the Gileadite had come down from Rogelim; and he went on to the Jordan with the king to escort him over the Jordan.
Barsillai, ein Mann aus Gilead, war von Roglim gekommen, um den König über den Jordan zu begleiten und sich dann von ihm zu verabschieden.
Now Barzillai was very old, being eighty years old; and he had sustained the king while he stayed at Mahanaim, for he was a very great man.
Barsillai war 80 Jahre alt. Er hatte David in Mahanajim mit allem versorgt, was dieser zum Leben brauchte, denn er war sehr reich.
The king said to Barzillai, “You cross over with me and I will sustain you in Jerusalem with me.”
Jetzt lud der König ihn ein: »Komm mit mir nach Jerusalem an meinen Hof! Es wird dir dort an nichts fehlen.«
But Barzillai said to the king, “How long have I yet to live, that I should go up with the king to Jerusalem?
Doch Barsillai lehnte ab: »Ich habe nicht mehr lange zu leben, warum sollte ich da noch nach Jerusalem ziehen!
“I am now eighty years old. Can I distinguish between good and bad? Or can your servant taste what I eat or what I drink? Or can I hear anymore the voice of singing men and women? Why then should your servant be an added burden to my lord the king?
80 Jahre bin ich nun schon alt, und es fällt mir schwer, klare Gedanken zu fassen. Ich schmecke kaum noch, was ich esse oder trinke, und den Gesang deiner Sänger und Sängerinnen höre ich nicht mehr gut. Ich würde dir, mein König, doch nur zur Last fallen.
“Your servant would merely cross over the Jordan with the king. Why should the king compensate me with this reward?
Nein, deine Einladung kann ich nicht annehmen. Ich will dich nur noch über den Jordan begleiten,
“Please let your servant return, that I may die in my own city near the grave of my father and my mother. However, here is your servant Chimham, let him cross over with my lord the king, and do for him what is good in your sight.”
und dann lass mich zurückkehren! Ich möchte in meiner Heimatstadt sterben, dort, wo schon mein Vater und meine Mutter begraben sind. Doch mein Sohn Kimham kann ja mit dir ziehen und dir dienen. Setz ihn dort ein, wo du ihn gebrauchen kannst.«
The king answered, “Chimham shall cross over with me, and I will do for him what is good in your sight; and whatever you require of me, I will do for you.”
Da antwortete David: »Ja, Kimham soll mit mir kommen. Ich werde alles für ihn tun, was du wünschst. Und wenn ich dir sonst noch Gutes erweisen kann, dann sag es ruhig! Ich erfülle dir jede Bitte.«
All the people crossed over the Jordan and the king crossed too. The king then kissed Barzillai and blessed him, and he returned to his place.
Anschließend überquerte David mit allen Begleitern den Jordan. Er küsste Barsillai zum Abschied und segnete ihn. Der alte Mann kehrte in seine Heimatstadt zurück,
Now the king went on to Gilgal, and Chimham went on with him; and all the people of Judah and also half the people of Israel accompanied the king.
während David weiter nach Gilgal zog. Kimham ging mit ihm. Der König wurde begleitet von den Männern des Stammes Juda und von der Hälfte der übrigen Israeliten.
And behold, all the men of Israel came to the king and said to the king, “Why had our brothers the men of Judah stolen you away, and brought the king and his household and all David’s men with him over the Jordan?”
Unterwegs kamen die Israeliten zum König und beklagten sich: »Warum haben ausgerechnet die Judäer dich, deine Familie und deine Truppen aus Mahanajim abgeholt und über den Jordan geleitet? Dazu hatten sie doch gar kein Recht!«
Then all the men of Judah answered the men of Israel, “Because the king is a close relative to us. Why then are you angry about this matter? Have we eaten at all at the king’s expense, or has anything been taken for us?”
»Die Antwort ist ganz einfach«, sagten die Judäer zu den Israeliten, »schließlich steht der König dem Stamm Juda näher. Was regt ihr euch darüber auf? Denkt ihr, wir hätten auf Kosten des Königs gelebt oder uns von ihm beschenken lassen?«
But the men of Israel answered the men of Judah and said, “We have ten parts in the king, therefore we also have more claim on David than you. Why then did you treat us with contempt? Was it not our advice first to bring back our king?” Yet the words of the men of Judah were harsher than the words of the men of Israel.
