Nehemiah’s Prayer
The words of Nehemiah son of Hakaliah:
In the month of Kislev in the twentieth year, while I was in the citadel of Susa,

Da besuchte mich Hanani, einer meiner Brüder, und mit ihm noch andere Männer aus Juda. Ich fragte sie: »Wie geht es den Juden, die aus der Verbannung heimgekehrt sind, und wie steht es um Jerusalem?«
Hanani, one of my brothers, came from Judah with some other men, and I questioned them about the Jewish remnant that had survived the exile, and also about Jerusalem.
Sie berichteten: »Die Zurückgekehrten leiden bittere Not. Man beschimpft sie. Von der Stadtmauer Jerusalems sind nur noch Trümmer übrig, die Tore liegen in Schutt und Asche.«
They said to me, “Those who survived the exile and are back in the province are in great trouble and disgrace. The wall of Jerusalem is broken down, and its gates have been burned with fire.”
Als ich das hörte, setzte ich mich hin und weinte. Ich trauerte tagelang, fastete und betete:
When I heard these things, I sat down and wept. For some days I mourned and fasted and prayed before the God of heaven.
»Ach, HERR, du Gott des Himmels, du großer und ehrfurchtgebietender Gott! Du hältst deinen Bund mit uns und erweist allen deine Güte, die dich lieben und nach deinen Geboten leben.
Then I said:
“Lord, the God of heaven, the great and awesome God, who keeps his covenant of love with those who love him and keep his commandments,

Verschließe deine Augen und Ohren nicht, wenn ich zu dir flehe! Tag und Nacht bete ich zu dir für das Leben der Israeliten. Du bist unser Herr. Ich bekenne dir, dass wir gegen dich gesündigt haben, auch ich und meine Verwandten.
let your ear be attentive and your eyes open to hear the prayer your servant is praying before you day and night for your servants, the people of Israel. I confess the sins we Israelites, including myself and my father’s family, have committed against you.
Wir alle haben schwere Schuld auf uns geladen. Wir hielten uns nicht an die Gebote und Weisungen, die dein Diener Mose von dir bekommen hat.
We have acted very wickedly toward you. We have not obeyed the commands, decrees and laws you gave your servant Moses.
Aber denke doch daran, was du zu Mose gesagt hast: ›Wenn ihr mich verlasst, werde ich euch unter die fremden Völker zerstreuen;
“Remember the instruction you gave your servant Moses, saying, ‘If you are unfaithful, I will scatter you among the nations,
wenn ihr aber wieder zu mir umkehrt und meine Gebote befolgt, dann lasse ich euch in euer Land zurückkehren, auch wenn ich euch bis ans Ende der Erde vertrieben habe. Ich bringe euch an den Ort, den ich erwählt habe, um dort selbst zu wohnen.‹
but if you return to me and obey my commands, then even if your exiled people are at the farthest horizon, I will gather them from there and bring them to the place I have chosen as a dwelling for my Name.’
Ach, Herr, sie gehören ja trotz allem zu dir; sie sind dein Volk, das du durch deine Macht und Stärke erlöst hast.
“They are your servants and your people, whom you redeemed by your great strength and your mighty hand.
Bitte erhöre doch mein Gebet und das Gebet aller, die dir dienen und dich ehren wollen. Und wenn ich beim König vorspreche, dann hilf mir, dass ich ein offenes Ohr bei ihm finde!« Denn ich war der Mundschenk des Königs.
Lord, let your ear be attentive to the prayer of this your servant and to the prayer of your servants who delight in revering your name. Give your servant success today by granting him favor in the presence of this man.”
