Ihr Berge und ihr uralten Fundamente der Erde, hört, welche Anklage der HERR gegen sein Volk erhebt! Jetzt geht er mit Israel ins Gericht.
Hear ye, O mountains, the LORD'S controversy, and ye strong foundations of the earth: for the LORD hath a controversy with his people, and he will plead with Israel.
Er fragt: »Was habe ich dir bloß angetan, mein Volk? Habe ich vielleicht zu viel von dir gefordert? Sag es nur!
O my people, what have I done unto thee? and wherein have I wearied thee? testify against me.
Habe ich dich nicht sogar aus der Sklaverei in Ägypten erlöst und dir Mose, Aaron und Mirjam als Führer gegeben?
For I brought thee up out of the land of Egypt, and redeemed thee out of the house of servants; and I sent before thee Moses, Aaron, and Miriam.
Mein Volk, erinnere dich doch, welche finsteren Pläne Balak, der König von Moab, gegen dich schmiedete und was ihm Bileam, der Sohn von Beor, zur Antwort gab! Denk daran, wie du den Jordan bei Schittim überquertest und weiter bis nach Gilgal zogst! Dann wirst du erkennen, was ich, der HERR, für dich getan habe. Ich bin treu und gerecht!«
O my people, remember now what Balak king of Moab consulted, and what Balaam the son of Beor answered him from Shittim unto Gilgal; that ye may know the righteousness of the LORD.
Das Volk fragt: »Wie können wir denn dem HERRN begegnen, diesem großen und erhabenen Gott? Sollen wir einjährige Rinder als Opfer für ihn verbrennen, wenn wir ihn anbeten wollen?
Wherewith shall I come before the LORD, and bow myself before the high God? shall I come before him with burnt offerings, with calves of a year old?
Hat er Gefallen daran, wenn wir ihm Tausende von Schafböcken und ganze Ströme von Olivenöl darbringen? Oder sollen wir ihm sogar unsere ältesten Söhne opfern, um unsere Schuld wiedergutzumachen?«
Will the LORD be pleased with thousands of rams, or with ten thousands of rivers of oil? shall I give my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?
Nein! Der HERR hat euch doch längst gesagt, was gut ist! Er fordert von euch Menschen nur eines: Haltet euch an das Recht, begegnet anderen mit Güte, und lebt in Ehrfurcht vor eurem Gott!

Hört, was der HERR der Stadt Jerusalem zuruft! Wer klug ist, der nimmt seine Worte ernst! Lasst euch warnen durch die Strafe, die euch bevorsteht! Gott selbst hat sie über euch verhängt.

Er sagt: »Soll ich noch länger zusehen, wie gewissenlose Menschen in ihren Häusern Schätze ansammeln, die sie nur durch Betrug bekommen haben? Sie tun, was ich verabscheue, und verwenden gefälschte Maße!
Are there yet the treasures of wickedness in the house of the wicked, and the scant measure that is abominable?
Wie kann ich sie freisprechen, wenn sie andere mit ihren falschen Waagen und Gewichtssteinen hinters Licht führen?
Shall I count them pure with the wicked balances, and with the bag of deceitful weights?
Die Reichen in der Stadt beuten die Menschen aus und unterdrücken sie, ja, alle Einwohner von Jerusalem lügen und betrügen!
For the rich men thereof are full of violence, and the inhabitants thereof have spoken lies, and their tongue is deceitful in their mouth.
Weil ihr so viel Schuld auf euch geladen habt, werde ich euch hart bestrafen und eure Stadt verwüsten.
Therefore also will I make thee sick in smiting thee, in making thee desolate because of thy sins.
Bald könnt ihr euch nicht mehr satt essen, ständig quält euch der Hunger. Was ihr beiseiteschafft, könnt ihr doch nicht retten, und was ihr noch in Sicherheit bringt, verliert ihr im Krieg.
Thou shalt eat, but not be satisfied; and thy casting down shall be in the midst of thee; and thou shalt take hold, but shalt not deliver; and that which thou deliverest will I give up to the sword.
Ihr werdet die Saat ausstreuen, aber keine Ernte einbringen, die Oliven auspressen, aber euch nicht mit dem Öl salben, Wein keltern, ihn aber nicht mehr genießen.
Thou shalt sow, but thou shalt not reap; thou shalt tread the olives, but thou shalt not anoint thee with oil; and sweet wine, but shalt not drink wine.
Bis heute folgt ihr dem schlechten Vorbild der Könige Omri und Ahab. Alles, was diese Sippe tat, habt ihr ihnen nachgemacht! Darum lasse ich eure Stadt zu einem Ort des Grauens werden und euch zur Zielscheibe des Spotts; überall wird man euch, mein Volk, verhöhnen und verachten.«
For the statutes of Omri are kept, and all the works of the house of Ahab, and ye walk in their counsels; that I should make thee a desolation, and the inhabitants thereof an hissing: therefore ye shall bear the reproach of my people.
