The Continuing Conquest of Canaan
Now after the death of Joshua it came to pass that the children of Israel asked the Lord, saying, “Who shall be first to go up for us against the Canaanites to fight against them?”

Der HERR antwortete: »Der Stamm Juda soll beginnen! Ihr werdet sehen: Ich gebe das Land in seine Gewalt.«
And the Lord said, “Judah shall go up. Indeed I have delivered the land into his hand.”
Da forderten die Männer von Juda den Stamm Simeon auf: »Kommt mit! Helft uns, die Kanaaniter aus dem Gebiet zu vertreiben, das uns zugeteilt wurde! Dann werden auch wir euch helfen, euer Gebiet einzunehmen.« Die Männer von Simeon schlossen sich denen von Juda an.
So Judah said to Simeon his brother, “Come up with me to my allotted territory, that we may fight against the Canaanites; and I will likewise go with you to your allotted territory.” And Simeon went with him.

Then Adoni-Bezek fled, and they pursued him and caught him and cut off his thumbs and big toes.
Da sagte Adoni-Besek: »Siebzig Königen habe ich die Daumen und die großen Zehen abhacken lassen. Sie mussten die Abfälle unter meinem Tisch für sich zum Essen aufsammeln. Nun zahlt Gott mir heim, was ich getan habe.« Man brachte ihn nach Jerusalem, und dort starb er.
And Adoni-Bezek said, “Seventy kings with their thumbs and big toes cut off used to gather scraps under my table; as I have done, so God has repaid me.” Then they brought him to Jerusalem, and there he died.
Die Männer des Stammes Juda griffen Jerusalem an und eroberten es. Sie töteten die Bewohner mit dem Schwert und steckten die Stadt in Brand.
Now the children of Judah fought against Jerusalem and took it; they struck it with the edge of the sword and set the city on fire.
Danach zogen sie weiter und kämpften gegen die Kanaaniter in der südlichen Steppe, im Bergland und in der Gegend, die sich von dort bis zum Mittelmeer erstreckt.
Sie griffen Hebron an, das früher Kirjat-Arba hieß, und besiegten dort die Kanaaniter Scheschai, Ahiman und Talmai mit ihren Sippen.
Dann zogen sie zur Stadt Debir, die man damals noch Kirjat-Sefer nannte.
From there they went against the inhabitants of Debir. (The name of Debir was formerly Kirjath Sepher.)
Kaleb, der judäische Heerführer, versprach seinen Männern: »Wer Kirjat-Sefer erobert, der erhält meine Tochter Achsa zur Frau!«
Then Caleb said, “Whoever attacks Kirjath Sepher and takes it, to him I will give my daughter Achsah as wife.”
Kalebs jüngerem Bruder Otniël, dem Sohn von Kenas, gelang es, die Stadt einzunehmen. Dafür sollte er Achsa zur Frau bekommen.
And Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother, took it; so he gave him his daughter Achsah as wife.
Achsa drängte Otniël, Kaleb um einen Acker zu bitten. Als sie dann am Tag der Hochzeit mit ihrem Vater auf dem Weg zu Otniël war, sprang sie plötzlich vom Esel ab. »Was ist los?«, fragte Kaleb.
»Gib mir zum Abschied deinen Segen und ein Geschenk!«, bat sie. »Du lässt mich in das trockene Südland ziehen, darum gib mir doch bitte auch ein paar Wasserstellen!« Da schenkte er ihr von seinem Besitz die oberen und unteren Quellen.
So she said to him, “Give me a blessing; since you have given me land in the South, give me also springs of water.”
And Caleb gave her the upper springs and the lower springs.

Die Keniter, die Nachkommen von Moses Schwiegervater, waren einst mit dem Stamm Juda aus der Palmenstadt in die Wüste Juda südlich von Arad gekommen und hatten sich dort angesiedelt.
Now the children of the Kenite, Moses’ father-in-law, went up from the City of Palms with the children of Judah into the Wilderness of Judah, which lies in the South near Arad; and they went and dwelt among the people.

And Judah went with his brother Simeon, and they attacked the Canaanites who inhabited Zephath, and utterly destroyed it. So the name of the city was called Hormah.
Dann eroberten die judäischen Soldaten die Städte Gaza, Aschkelon und Ekron mit den umliegenden Gebieten.
Also Judah took Gaza with its territory, Ashkelon with its territory, and Ekron with its territory.
Der HERR stand ihnen bei und half ihnen, das Bergland einzunehmen. Es gelang ihnen jedoch nicht, die Bewohner der Küstenebene zu vertreiben, denn diese besaßen eiserne Streitwagen.
So the Lord was with Judah. And they drove out the mountaineers, but they could not drive out the inhabitants of the lowland, because they had chariots of iron.
Kaleb erhielt die Stadt Hebron, wie Mose es befohlen hatte. Er vertrieb von dort die drei Nachkommen von Anak mit ihren Sippen.
Der Stamm Benjamin ließ die Jebusiter in Jerusalem wohnen. Bis heute leben sie dort neben den Benjaminitern.
But the children of Benjamin did not drive out the Jebusites who inhabited Jerusalem; so the Jebusites dwell with the children of Benjamin in Jerusalem to this day.
Auch die Stämme Ephraim und Manasse brachen auf und zogen nach Bethel, das früher Lus hieß. Als sie die Gegend auskundschaften wollten, um die Stadt zu erobern, stand der HERR ihnen bei:
Ihre Späher entdeckten einen Mann, der gerade die Stadt verließ. Sie hielten ihn an und sagten: »Zeig uns, wie wir nach Bethel hineinkommen! Dafür werden wir dich verschonen.«
And when the spies saw a man coming out of the city, they said to him, “Please show us the entrance to the city, and we will show you mercy.”
Da zeigte er ihnen einen unbewachten Zugang zur Stadt. Sie drangen ein und töteten alle Einwohner mit dem Schwert. Nur den Mann und seine Verwandten ließen sie am Leben.
So he showed them the entrance to the city, and they struck the city with the edge of the sword; but they let the man and all his family go.
Er ging ins Land der Hetiter und gründete dort eine Stadt namens Lus, die heute noch so genannt wird.
And the man went to the land of the Hittites, built a city, and called its name Luz, which is its name to this day.
Die Einwohner der Städte Bet-Schean, Taanach, Dor, Jibleam, Megiddo und der umliegenden Orte vertrieb der Stamm Manasse nicht, und so konnten die Kanaaniter dort weiterhin wohnen.
Incomplete Conquest of the Land
However, Manasseh did not drive out the inhabitants of Beth Shean and its villages, or Taanach and its villages, or the inhabitants of Dor and its villages, or the inhabitants of Ibleam and its villages, or the inhabitants of Megiddo and its villages; for the Canaanites were determined to dwell in that land.

Und auch der Stamm Asser schickte weder die Einwohner von Akko fort noch die von Sidon, Mahaleb, Achsib, Helba, Afek und Rehob.
Nor did Asher drive out the inhabitants of Acco or the inhabitants of Sidon, or of Ahlab, Achzib, Helbah, Aphik, or Rehob.
So lebte Asser mitten unter den Kanaanitern, die das Land schon vorher bewohnt hatten.
So the Asherites dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land; for they did not drive them out.
Der Stamm Naftali vertrieb die Einwohner von Bet-Schemesch und Bet-Anat nicht, sondern siedelte sich unter den Einheimischen an. Er verpflichtete die beiden Städte aber zum Frondienst.
Nor did Naphtali drive out the inhabitants of Beth Shemesh or the inhabitants of Beth Anath; but they dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land. Nevertheless the inhabitants of Beth Shemesh and Beth Anath were put under tribute to them.

And the Amorites forced the children of Dan into the mountains, for they would not allow them to come down to the valley;
