And an angel of the LORD came up from Gilgal to Bochim, and said, I made you to go up out of Egypt, and have brought you unto the land which I sware unto your fathers; and I said, I will never break my covenant with you.

Ich befahl: ›Lasst euch nicht mit den Bewohnern dieses Landes ein! Zerstört ihre Götzenaltäre!‹ Doch was habt ihr getan? Ihr habt nicht auf mich gehört!
And ye shall make no league with the inhabitants of this land; ye shall throw down their altars: but ye have not obeyed my voice: why have ye done this?
Darum werde ich diese Völker nicht mehr aus eurem Gebiet vertreiben. Stattdessen wird das eintreffen, wovor ich euch gewarnt habe: Sie werden euch großes Leid zufügen und euch mit ihren Götzen ins Verderben stürzen.«
Wherefore I also said, I will not drive them out from before you; but they shall be as thorns in your sides, and their gods shall be a snare unto you.
Als der Engel des HERRN dies gesagt hatte, begannen die Israeliten laut zu weinen.
And it came to pass, when the angel of the LORD spake these words unto all the children of Israel, that the people lifted up their voice, and wept.
Sie brachten dem HERRN Opfer dar und nannten den Ort Bochim (»Weinende«).
And they called the name of that place Bochim: and they sacrificed there unto the LORD.

The Death of Joshua

Israel's Unfaithfulness

und wandten sich ab vom HERRN, dem Gott ihrer Vorfahren, der ihr Volk aus Ägypten befreit hatte. Den Götzen der Völker ringsum liefen sie nach und beteten sie an. Damit forderten sie den Zorn des HERRN heraus.
And they forsook the LORD God of their fathers, which brought them out of the land of Egypt, and followed other gods, of the gods of the people that were round about them, and bowed themselves unto them, and provoked the LORD to anger.
Sie kehrten ihm den Rücken und dienten dem Gott Baal und der Göttin Astarte.
And they forsook the LORD, and served Baal and Ashtaroth.
Der HERR war zornig auf die Israeliten. Er sorgte dafür, dass Räuberbanden sie ausplünderten und ihre Nachbarvölker mächtiger wurden als sie. Nun konnten die Israeliten sich nicht mehr gegen ihre Feinde behaupten.
And the anger of the LORD was hot against Israel, and he delivered them into the hands of spoilers that spoiled them, and he sold them into the hands of their enemies round about, so that they could not any longer stand before their enemies.
Was sie auch unternahmen, um sich zu verteidigen — der HERR ließ es ihnen misslingen. Sie gerieten in große Bedrängnis, so wie er es ihnen angekündigt hatte.
Whithersoever they went out, the hand of the LORD was against them for evil, as the LORD had said, and as the LORD had sworn unto them: and they were greatly distressed.
Da berief der HERR Männer zu Führern seines Volkes, die es aus der Gewalt der Feinde befreiten. Sie wurden Richter genannt.
Judges Raised Up
Nevertheless the LORD raised up judges, which delivered them out of the hand of those that spoiled them.

Aber auch auf die Richter hörten die Israeliten nicht, sondern warfen sich fremden Göttern an den Hals und beteten sie an. So kamen sie bald wieder von dem Weg ab, den ihre Vorfahren gegangen waren. Damals hatten die Israeliten sich noch an die Gebote des HERRN gehalten, doch nun taten sie, was sie wollten.
And yet they would not hearken unto their judges, but they went a whoring after other gods, and bowed themselves unto them: they turned quickly out of the way which their fathers walked in, obeying the commandments of the LORD; but they did not so.
Wenn sie dann aber verzweifelt klagten, weil ihre Feinde sie hart bedrängten und unterdrückten, hatte der HERR Mitleid mit ihnen. Er berief einen Richter und stand ihm bei, um das Volk aus der Hand seiner Feinde zu retten. Solange der Richter lebte, waren die Israeliten in Sicherheit.
And when the LORD raised them up judges, then the LORD was with the judge, and delivered them out of the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge: for it repented the LORD because of their groanings by reason of them that oppressed them and vexed them.
Nach seinem Tod aber schlugen sie wieder ihre alten Wege ein. Sie verehrten andere Götter, dienten ihnen und warfen sich vor ihnen nieder. Dabei trieben sie es noch schlimmer als ihre Vorfahren. Stur hielten sie an ihren Machenschaften fest und ließen sich durch nichts davon abbringen.
And it came to pass, when the judge was dead, that they returned, and corrupted themselves more than their fathers, in following other gods to serve them, and to bow down unto them; they ceased not from their own doings, nor from their stubborn way.
Da wurde der HERR wieder zornig auf sie und sprach: »Dieses Volk hat den Bund gebrochen, den ich mit ihren Vorfahren geschlossen habe. Sie wollen nicht auf mich hören.
And the anger of the LORD was hot against Israel; and he said, Because that this people hath transgressed my covenant which I commanded their fathers, and have not hearkened unto my voice;
Darum werde ich keines der Völker, die seit Josuas Tod noch im Land sind, mehr vertreiben; sie sollen dort bleiben.
I also will not henceforth drive out any from before them of the nations which Joshua left when he died:
Durch sie will ich die Israeliten auf die Probe stellen und sehen, ob sie sich an meine Gebote halten wie ihre Vorfahren oder nicht.«
That through them I may prove Israel, whether they will keep the way of the LORD to walk therein, as their fathers did keep it, or not.
