Zu der Zeit schwur Josua und sprach: Verflucht sei der Mann vor dem HERRN, der sich aufmacht und diese Stadt Jericho wieder baut! Wenn er ihren Grund legt, das koste ihn seinen ersten Sohn; wenn er ihre Tore setzt, das koste ihn seinen jüngsten Sohn!

Als Jericho niederbrannte, sprach Josua einen Fluch aus: »Die Strafe des HERRN soll den treffen, der diese Stadt wieder aufbaut. Wenn er das Fundament legt, muss er dafür mit dem Tod seines ältesten Sohnes bezahlen, und wenn er die Tore einsetzt, wird er auch noch seinen jüngsten verlieren.«

Damals schwor Josua: Verflucht beim HERRN sei der Mann, der es unternimmt, diese Stadt Jericho wieder aufzubauen. Seinen Erstgeborenen soll es ihn kosten, wenn er sie neu gründet, und seinen Jüngsten, wenn er ihre Tore wieder aufrichtet.
