And Absalom answered Joab, Behold, I sent unto thee, saying, Come hither, that I may send thee to the king, to say, Wherefore am I come from Geshur? it had been good for me to have been there still: now therefore let me see the king's face; and if there be any iniquity in me, let him kill me.

Absalom sprach zu Joab: Siehe, ich sandte nach dir und ließ dir sagen: Komm her, daß ich dich zum König sende und sagen lasse: Warum bin ich von Gessur gekommen? Es wäre mir besser, daß ich noch da wäre. So laß mich nun das Angesicht des Königs sehen; ist aber eine Missetat an mir, so töte mich.

Abschalom antwortete: Ich hatte doch jemand zu dir geschickt und dir sagen lassen: Komm her, ich möchte dich zum König senden. Du sollst ihn fragen: Wozu bin ich eigentlich von Geschur hergekommen? Es wäre für mich besser gewesen, ich wäre dort geblieben. Jetzt aber möchte ich dem König vor die Augen treten. Wenn eine Schuld auf mir liegt, soll er mich töten.

»Weil du nicht gekommen bist, als ich dich rufen ließ«, erwiderte Absalom. »Du solltest für mich zum König gehen und ihn fragen, warum man mich überhaupt aus Geschur geholt hat. Ich hätte lieber dort bleiben sollen. Entweder der König empfängt mich jetzt endlich, oder er lässt mich hinrichten, falls er mich immer noch für schuldig hält!«
