Если решиться нам пойти в город, то в городе голод, и мы там умрём; если же сидеть здесь, то также умрём. Пойдём лучше в стан Сирийский. Если оставят нас в живых, будем жить, а если умертвят, умрём.

Wenn wir gleich gedächten, in die Stadt zu kommen, so ist Teuerung in der Stadt, und wir müßten doch daselbst sterben; bleiben wir aber hier, so müssen wir auch sterben. So laßt uns nun hingehen und zu dem Heer der Syrer fallen. Lassen sie uns leben, so leben wir; töten sie uns, so sind wir tot.

Wollten wir in die Stadt gehen, in der Hungersnot herrscht, dann sterben wir in ihr. Bleiben wir draußen, dann sterben wir auch. Kommt, wir gehen in das Lager der Aramäer hinüber! Wenn sie uns am Leben lassen, bleiben wir am Leben. Wenn sie uns töten, so sterben wir.

In der Stadt herrscht Hungersnot. Gehen wir in die Stadt, dann verhungern wir, bleiben wir hier, verhungern wir auch. Warum also nicht ins Lager der Syrer gehen? Wenn sie uns am Leben lassen, dann haben wir noch einmal Glück gehabt. Und wenn sie uns umbringen, ist es auch egal. Hier wären wir ja sowieso gestorben.«
