Eli war inzwischen 98 Jahre alt und völlig erblindet. Er saß wie gewohnt draußen auf seinem Stuhl und wartete gespannt auf eine Meldung über den Ausgang der Schlacht, denn er machte sich große Sorgen um die Bundeslade. Als der Mann in der Stadt ankam und dort seine Schreckensnachricht meldete, schrien alle, die es hörten, laut auf. Eli hörte den Lärm und fragte: »Was bedeutet dieses Geschrei?« Da war der Bote auch schon bei ihm angelangt und erzählte ihm:
