The Defiling of Dinah

And Dinah the daughter of Leah, whom she had borne to Jacob, went out to see the daughters of the land.

Дина, дочь Лии от Иакова, пошла навестить местных женщин.

And when Shechem, the son of Hamor the Hivite, the prince of the country, saw her, he took her, and lay with her, and humbled her.

Когда Шехем, сын хиввея Хамора, правителя той области, увидел ее, то схватил, лег с ней и обесчестил ее.

And his soul fastened on Dinah the daughter of Jacob, and he loved the maiden, and spoke consolingly to the maiden.

Сердце его прилепилось к Дине, дочери Иакова, он полюбил ее и говорил с ней нежно.

And Shechem spoke to his father Hamor, saying, Take me this girl as wife.

И Шехем сказал своему отцу Хамору:
— Возьми мне эту девушку в жены.

And Jacob heard that he had defiled Dinah his daughter; but his sons were with his cattle in the fields, and Jacob said nothing until they came.

Когда Иаков услышал, что его дочь Дина обесчещена, его сыновья были в поле со стадами, и он молчал об этом, пока они не вернулись домой.

And Hamor the father of Shechem came out to Jacob, to speak to him.

Хамор, отец Шехема, пришел переговорить с Иаковом.

And the sons of Jacob came from the fields when they heard [it]; and the men were grieved, and they were very angry, because he had wrought what was disgraceful in Israel, in lying with Jacob's daughter, which thing ought not to be done.

Сыновья Иакова вернулись с полей, как только услышали о случившемся. Они были полны горя и ярости, потому что Шехем сделал постыдное дело в Израиле, когда лег с дочерью Иакова, а такое недопустимо.

And Hamor spoke to them, saying, My son Shechem's soul cleaves to your daughter: I pray you, give her to him as wife.

Хамор сказал им:
— Мой сын Шехем всем сердцем привязался к вашей дочери. Прошу вас, отдайте ее ему в жены.

And make marriages with us: give your daughters to us, and take our daughters to you.

Заключайте с нами браки: отдавайте нам своих дочерей и берите за себя наших.

10

And dwell with us, and the land shall be before you: dwell and trade in it, and get yourselves possessions in it.

Вы можете селиться среди нас, — земля перед вами: живите в ней, торгуйте и приобретайте имущество.

And Shechem said to her father and to her brethren, Let me find favour in your eyes; and what ye shall say to me I will give.

Шехем сказал отцу и братьям Дины:
— Я дам вам все, что вы скажете, да найду я расположение в ваших глазах!

Impose on me very much as dowry and gift, and I will give according as ye shall say to me; but give me the maiden as wife.

Назначьте за невесту любой выкуп и подарки, и я заплачу, только отдайте мне ее в жены.

The Revenge of Dinah's Brothers

And the sons of Jacob answered Shechem and Hamor his father deceitfully, and spoke -- because he had defiled Dinah their sister --

13

Тогда сыновья Иакова ответили Шехему и его отцу Хамору лживо, потому что он обесчестил их сестру Дину.

14

and said to them, We cannot do this, to give our sister to one that is uncircumcised; for that [were] a reproach to us.

14

Они сказали им:
— Мы не можем сделать такого: отдать нашу сестру необрезанному мужчине было бы для нас позором.

15

But only in this will we consent to you, if ye will be as we, that every male of you be circumcised;

15

Мы дадим согласие лишь при одном условии: если вы станете, как мы, и сделаете всем вашим мужчинам обрезание.

16

then will we give our daughters to you, and take your daughters to us, and we will dwell with you, and be one people.

16

Тогда мы будем отдавать вам наших дочерей и брать за себя ваших. Мы поселимся среди вас и станем с вами одним народом.

17

But if ye do not hearken to us, to be circumcised, then will we take our daughter and go away.

17

Но если вы не согласитесь сделать обрезание, мы заберем сестру179 и уйдем.

And their words were good in the eyes of Hamor and Shechem, Hamor's son.

18

Их слова пришлись по сердцу Хамору и его сыну Шехему.

19

And the youth did not delay to do this, because he had delight in Jacob's daughter. And he was honourable above all in the house of his father.

Молодой человек без промедления исполнил то, что они сказали, потому что очень любил дочь Иакова — а он, Шехем, был самым уважаемым в доме своего отца.

20

And Hamor and Shechem his son came to the gate of their city, and spoke to the men of their city, saying,

Затем Хамор и его сын Шехем пришли к воротам города и обратились к жителям.

21

These men are peaceable with us; therefore let them dwell in the land, and trade in it. And the land -- behold, it is of wide extent before them. We will take their daughters as wives, and give them our daughters.

21

— Эти люди дружелюбны к нам, — сказали они. — Пусть живут в нашей земле и торгуют в ней: на этой земле для них достаточно места. Мы будем жениться на их дочерях, и они пусть женятся на наших.

22

But only in this will the men consent to us to dwell with us, to be one people -- if every male among us be circumcised, just as they are circumcised.

22

Но лишь при одном условии согласятся эти люди жить с нами как один народ: если наши мужчины, как и они сами, будут обрезаны.

23

Their cattle, and their possessions, and every beast of theirs, shall they not be ours? only let us consent to them, and they will dwell with us.

23

Не станут ли тогда их стада, имущество и весь их скот нашими? Давайте же выполним их условие, и они поселятся среди нас.

24

And all that went out at the gate of his city hearkened to Hamor and to Shechem his son; and every male was circumcised -- all that went out at the gate of his city.

Все, кто собирались у городских ворот, согласились с Хамором и его сыном Шехемом, и все мужчины в городе были обрезаны.

25

And it came to pass on the third day, when they were sore, that two of the sons of Jacob, Simeon and Levi, Dinah's brethren, took each his sword, and came upon the city boldly, and slew all the males.

Три дня спустя, когда они еще страдали от боли, двое сыновей Иакова — Симеон и Левий, братья Дины — взяли мечи, неожиданно напали на город и убили всех мужчин.

And Hamor and Shechem his son they slew with the edge of the sword; and took Dinah out of Shechem's house; and went out.

Они убили мечом Хамора и его сына Шехема, забрали Дину из Шехемова дома и ушли.

The sons of Jacob came upon the slain, and plundered the city, because they had defiled their sister.

27

Сыновья Иакова вошли к убитым и разграбили город, где180 была обесчещена их сестра.

28

Their sheep, and their oxen, and their asses, and what [was] in the city, and what [was] in the field they took;

Они захватили стада крупного и мелкого скота, ослов — все, что было в городе и в полях;

and all their goods, and all their little ones, and their wives took they captive, and plundered them, and all that was in the houses.

29

и все их богатство, и детей, и женщин, и все, что было в домах, они захватили себе и взяли в добычу.

30

And Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, Ye have troubled me, in that ye make me odious among the inhabitants of the land -- among the Canaanites and the Perizzites; and I am few men in number, and they will gather themselves against me and smite me, and I shall be destroyed, I and my house.

Тогда Иаков сказал Симеону и Левию:
— Вы навлекли на меня беду, сделали меня ненавистным для жителей этой земли, хананеев и ферезеев. Нас не так уж и много, и если они объединят силы и нападут на меня, я и мой дом будем уничтожены.

And they said, Should people deal with our sister as with a harlot?

Но они ответили:
— Разве можно поступать с нашей сестрой, как с блудницей?
