And Dinah the daughter of Leah, whom she had borne to Jacob, went out to see the daughters of the land.

А Діна, дочка Лії, яку вона народила Якову, вийшла познайомитися з дочками тієї місцевості.
And when Shechem, the son of Hamor the Hivite, the prince of the country, saw her, he took her, and lay with her, and humbled her.
І побачив її син Емора Сихем — хореєць, володар тієї землі; він узяв її і спав з нею, і збезчестив її.
And his soul fastened on Dinah the daughter of Jacob, and he loved the maiden, and spoke consolingly to the maiden.
Та прив’язався він до душі Діни, дочки Якова, і покохав дівчину, і говорив їй згідно з дівочими мріями.
And Shechem spoke to his father Hamor, saying, Take me this girl as wife.
І сказав Сихем Еморові, своєму батькові, мовлячи: Візьми мені цю дівчину за дружину.
And Jacob heard that he had defiled Dinah his daughter; but his sons were with his cattle in the fields, and Jacob said nothing until they came.
Яків довідався, що син Емора збезчестив його дочку Діну, а сини його були з його худобою на рівнині. Тож поки вони не поприходили, Яків мовчав.
And Hamor the father of Shechem came out to Jacob, to speak to him.
Та Емор, батько Сихема, прийшов до Якова, аби переговорити з ним.
And the sons of Jacob came from the fields when they heard [it]; and the men were grieved, and they were very angry, because he had wrought what was disgraceful in Israel, in lying with Jacob's daughter, which thing ought not to be done.
А сини Якова прийшли з пасовиська. Коли почули, то засмутилися чоловіки, і дуже боляче було їм, бо, переспавши з дочкою Якова, вчинив те, що не личить в Ізраїлі, — так не повинно бути!
And Hamor spoke to them, saying, My son Shechem's soul cleaves to your daughter: I pray you, give her to him as wife.
Та Емор звернувся до них, говорячи: Моєму синові Сихему припала до душі ваша дочка. Тож дайте її йому за дружину.
And make marriages with us: give your daughters to us, and take our daughters to you.
Порідніться з нами; ваших дочок дайте нам, а наших дочок беріть вашим синам.
And dwell with us, and the land shall be before you: dwell and trade in it, and get yourselves possessions in it.
Ось земля широка перед вами, тож живіть у нас. Оселяйтеся, перебувайте в ній і набувайте її у власність.
And Shechem said to her father and to her brethren, Let me find favour in your eyes; and what ye shall say to me I will give.
А Сихем сказав її батькові та її братам: Нехай знайду я у вас ласку, — і що лише скажете, — ми дамо.
Impose on me very much as dowry and gift, and I will give according as ye shall say to me; but give me the maiden as wife.
Призначіть якнайбільший викуп — і, що лише скажете мені, я дам. Але дайте мені цю дівчину за дружину.
The Revenge of Dinah's Brothers
And the sons of Jacob answered Shechem and Hamor his father deceitfully, and spoke -- because he had defiled Dinah their sister --

А сини Якова підступно відповіли Сихемові та його батькові Еморові, а говорили до них так, тому що той збезчестив їхню сестру Діну.
and said to them, We cannot do this, to give our sister to one that is uncircumcised; for that [were] a reproach to us.
Симеон та Левій, Дінині брати й сини Лії, сказали їм: Не можемо виконати цього прохання — дати нашу сестру чоловікові, який є необрізаний. Адже це для нас ганебно.
But only in this will we consent to you, if ye will be as we, that every male of you be circumcised;
У такому випадку уподібнимося до вас і поселимося у вас, якщо ви станете, як ми: коли кожному з вас, хто чоловічої статі, зробите обрізання.
then will we give our daughters to you, and take your daughters to us, and we will dwell with you, and be one people.
І будемо віддавати наших дочок вам, і будемо брати ваших дочок собі за дружин, і оселимося серед вас, і будемо як один народ.
But if ye do not hearken to us, to be circumcised, then will we take our daughter and go away.
Коли ж не послухаєте нас щодо обрізання, то заберемо наших дочок і підемо геть.
And their words were good in the eyes of Hamor and Shechem, Hamor's son.
Їхні слова сподобалися Еморові й Сихемові, Еморовому синові.
And the youth did not delay to do this, because he had delight in Jacob's daughter. And he was honourable above all in the house of his father.
І юнак не зволікав з виконанням цієї вимоги, бо кохав дочку Якова. Він же був найславніший з усіх у домі його батька.
And Hamor and Shechem his son came to the gate of their city, and spoke to the men of their city, saying,
Тож Емор і його син Сихем пішли до брами свого міста і звернулися до людей свого міста, кажучи:
These men are peaceable with us; therefore let them dwell in the land, and trade in it. And the land -- behold, it is of wide extent before them. We will take their daughters as wives, and give them our daughters.
Ці люди миролюбні до нас. Хай поселяються на землі й торгують на ній — ось бо перед ними простора земля. Будемо брати їхніх дочок собі за дружин, а наших дочок віддаватимемо їм.
But only in this will the men consent to us to dwell with us, to be one people -- if every male among us be circumcised, just as they are circumcised.
Та лише в такому випадку уподібняться нам чоловіки, щоб жити з нами, аби стати одним народом, коли в нас буде обрізаний кожний чоловічої статі, як і вони обрізані.
Their cattle, and their possessions, and every beast of theirs, shall they not be ours? only let us consent to them, and they will dwell with us.
І їхні стада, і їхні маєтки, і худоба, — хіба не стануть нашими? Лише в такому випадку уподібнимося їм, і вони поселяться з нами.
And all that went out at the gate of his city hearkened to Hamor and to Shechem his son; and every male was circumcised -- all that went out at the gate of his city.
Тож усі, які проходили брамою їхнього міста, прислухалися до Емора та його сина Сихема і зробили обрізання крайньої плоті, — кожний чоловічої статі.
And it came to pass on the third day, when they were sore, that two of the sons of Jacob, Simeon and Levi, Dinah's brethren, took each his sword, and came upon the city boldly, and slew all the males.
А на третій день, коли були ще в болі, сталося таке: взяли два сини Якова, Симеон та Левій, Дінині брати, кожний свого меча, безпечно ввійшли в місто і повбивали всіх чоловіків.
And Hamor and Shechem his son they slew with the edge of the sword; and took Dinah out of Shechem's house; and went out.
І Емора, і його сина Сихема вбили вістрям меча, а Діну забрали з дому Сихема, та й вийшли.
The sons of Jacob came upon the slain, and plundered the city, because they had defiled their sister.
Сини Якова перейшли по вбитих і пограбували місто, в якому збезчещено їхню сестру Діну.
Their sheep, and their oxen, and their asses, and what [was] in the city, and what [was] in the field they took;
І захопили їхніх овець, їхніх волів і їхніх ослів: усе, що було в місті, і все, що було на рівнині.
and all their goods, and all their little ones, and their wives took they captive, and plundered them, and all that was in the houses.
І все, що жило в них, і весь їхній посуд, і їхніх жінок узяли в полон, — тож розграбували все, що було в місті, і все, що було в домах.
And Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, Ye have troubled me, in that ye make me odious among the inhabitants of the land -- among the Canaanites and the Perizzites; and I am few men in number, and they will gather themselves against me and smite me, and I shall be destroyed, I and my house.
Та Яків сказав Симеонові та Левієві: Ви зробили мене ненависним, так що я став негідником для всіх, хто живе на землі — між ханаанцями та ферезейцями. Я — нечисленний, тож, зібравшись проти мене, поб’ють мене, і вигублений буду я та мій дім.
