Saul's Overthrow and Death

And the Philistines fought against Israel; and the men of Israel fled from before the Philistines, and fell down slain on mount Gilboa.

Філістимляни воювалися з Ізраїлем, і ізраїльтяни втекли від філістимлян і впали, побиті на горі Гілбоа.

And the Philistines followed hard after Saul and after his sons; and the Philistines smote Jonathan, and Abinadab, and Malchi-shua, Saul's sons.

Та філістимляни налягли на Саула й на його синів і вбили Йонатана, Авінадава та Малкішуа, синів Саула.

And the battle went sore against Saul, and the archers came up with him, and he was terrified by the archers.

Битва лютувала проти Саула. Лучники настигли його, й він вельми злякавсь їх.

Then said Saul to his armour-bearer, Draw thy sword, and thrust me through with it; lest these uncircumcised come and abuse me. But his armour-bearer would not; for he was much afraid. So Saul took the sword and fell on it.

Тоді Саул сказав до свого зброєноші: “Витягни свого меча й заколи мене ним, щоб не прийшли оті необрізані та й не знущались надо мною.” Але зброєноша не хотів, бо дуже наполохався. Тоді Саул узяв меча й настромивсь на нього.

And when his armour-bearer saw that Saul was dead, he fell likewise on the sword, and died.

Зброєноша, побачивши, що Саул помер, настромився й сам на меч і помер.

So Saul died, and his three sons, and all his house died together.

Так помер Саул і три сини його, й увесь його дім вимер разом з ним.

The Philistines Possess the Towns

And when all the men of Israel that were in the valley saw that they fled, and that Saul and his sons were dead, they forsook their cities and fled; and the Philistines came and dwelt in them.

Як же побачили ізраїльські люди, які були в долині, що військо втекло й що Саул та його сини загинули, — покинули свої міста й порозбігались, а тоді прийшли філістимляни й оселились у них.

And it came to pass the next day, that the Philistines came to strip the slain, and they found Saul and his sons fallen on mount Gilboa.

Наступного дня прийшли філістимляни обдирати побитих і знайшли Саула та його синів мертвими на горі Гілбоа.

And they stripped him, and took his head, and his armour, and sent [them] into the land of the Philistines round about, to announce the glad tidings to their idols, and to the people.

Облупили вони його, взяли його голову та зброю й послали скрізь по Філістимлянському краю, щоб дати радісну вість своїм кумирам та народові.

And they put his armour in the house of their god, and fastened his head in the house of Dagon.

10

Вони склали його зброю в капищі свого бога, а череп його повісили в храмі Дагона.

Jabesh-Gilead's Tribute to Saul

And when all they of Jabesh-Gilead heard of all that the Philistines had done to Saul,

Як же довідались мешканці Явешу Гілеадського про все, що філістимляни зробили з Саулом,

12

all the valiant men arose, and took up the body of Saul and the bodies of his sons, and brought them to Jabesh, and buried their bones under the terebinth of Jabesh, and fasted seven days.

рушили хоробрі всі люди, взяли тіло Саула й тіла його синів, принесли їх у Явеш і поховали їхні кості під дубом у Явеші, і постили сім день.

13

And Saul died for his unfaithfulness which he committed against Jehovah, because of the word of Jehovah which he kept not, and also for having inquired of the spirit of Python, asking counsel of it;

Так помер Саул за свою невірність, якою провинився перед Господом, за те, що не пильнував Гослоднього слова, за те, що питав у чарівниці поради

and he asked not counsel of Jehovah; therefore he slew him, and transferred the kingdom to David the son of Jesse.

та за те, що не питав її у Господа. Тим він і погубив його, а царство передав Давидові, синові Єссея.
