Job's Former Blessings

And Job continued his parable and said,

1

І повів Іов далі свою мову і сказав:

2

Oh that I were as in months past, as in the days when +God preserved me;

2

«О, коли б я був такий, як за місяців колишніх,
як за тих днів, коли Бог мене хоронив був,

3

When his lamp shone over my head, [and] by his light I walked through darkness;

3

коли над головою в мене сяяв його світич,
коли при його світлі я ходив у пітьмі!

4

As I was in the days of my youth, when the secret counsel of +God was over my tent,

4

Такий, як за днів осени моєї,
коли Бог вітав над моїм наметом,

5

When the Almighty was yet with me, my young men round about me;

5

коли Всевишній був іще зо мною
і круг мене були мої діти;

6

When my steps were bathed in milk, and the rock poured out beside me rivers of oil! ...

6

коли у молоці купались мої ноги,
і скеля точила потоками олію!

7

When I went out to the gate by the city, when I prepared my seat on the broadway,

7

Як я, було, виходив до брами в місті,
встановлював мій ослін на майдані,

8

The young men saw me, and hid themselves; and the aged arose [and] stood up;

8

хлопці, зобачивши мене, ніяковіли,
старі ж уставали — і залишалися стояти.

9

Princes refrained from talking, and laid the hand on their mouth;

9

Вельможі стримувались від розмови,
на уста клали собі руку.

10

The voice of the nobles was hushed, and their tongue cleaved to their palate.

10

І голос старшин тихнув,
язик їхній прилипав до піднебіння.

11

When the ear heard [me], then it blessed me, and when the eye saw [me], it gave witness to me;

11

Вухо, що мене чуло, мене хвалило;
око, що мене бачило, свідчило про мене.

12

For I delivered the afflicted that cried, and the fatherless who had no helper.

12

Я бо рятував убогого, що кликав,
і сироту, й того, кому ніхто не допомагає.

13

The blessing of him that was perishing came upon me, and I caused the widow's heart to sing for joy.

13

Хто гинув, того благословення сходило на мене,
і серцю вдовиці я давав відраду.

14

I put on righteousness, and it clothed me; my justice was as a mantle and a turban.

14

Я одягавсь у справедливість, і вона вдягалась у мене;
право моє було, мов мантія і корона.

15

I was eyes to the blind, and feet was I to the lame;

15

Я був сліпому оком,
кульгавому я був ногами!

16

I was a father to the needy, and the cause which I knew not I searched out;

16

Я батьком був для вбогих,
я розглядав невідомого справу.

17

And I broke the jaws of the unrighteous, and plucked the spoil out of his teeth.

17

Я торощив щелепи злому,
з зубів у нього виривав здобич.

18

And I said, I shall die in my nest, and multiply my days as the sand;

18

Я думав собі: Умру старим!
Днів моїх, як піску, буде багато.

19

My root shall be spread out to the waters, and the dew will lie all night on my branch;

19

Мій корінь буде при воді відкритий,
роса у мене на галуззі заночує.

20

My glory shall be fresh in me, and my bow be renewed in my hand.

20

Слава моя завжди буде відновлятись,
лук мій зміцніє в руці у мене.

21

Unto me they listened, and waited, and kept silence for my counsel:

Вони мене слухали уважно
— замовкали, коли я їм радив.

22

After my words they spoke not again, and my speech dropped upon them;

22

По моїй мові не говорили більше,
— крапля по краплі спадало на них моє слово.

23

And they waited for me as for the rain, and they opened their mouth wide as for the latter rain.

23

Вони, мов на дощ, на мене чекали,
і розтуляли рот свій, мов на дощ пізній.

24

[If] I laughed on them, they believed [it] not; and they troubled not the serenity of my countenance.

24

Усміхнусь, було, до них, коли вони зневіряться,
— веселости з мого обличчя не проганяли.

25

I chose their way, and sat as chief, and dwelt as a king in the army, as one that comforteth mourners.

25

Я призначав дорогу їм, я був їм головою.
Я жив, неначе цар при війську;
куди б я їх тільки вів, — ішли за мною.»
