Hear my words, ye wise [men]; and give ear unto me, ye that have knowledge.
Слухайте, мудрі, моєї річі, нахилїть до мене ухо, ви розумні!
For the ear trieth words, as the palate tasteth food.
Ухо бо слова розбірає, як піднебіннє розізнає смак у їдї.
Let us choose for ourselves what is right; let us know among ourselves what is good!
Зложім суд між собою й визнаймо, що добре.
For Job hath said, I am righteous, and God hath taken away my judgment:
Ось, Йов сказав: Я прав, та Бог відмовив менї суду.
Should I lie against my right? My wound is incurable without transgression.
Чи ж менї лгати на правду мою? Моя невилїчима рана — незаслужена.
What man is like Job? he drinketh up scorning like water,
Хиба є де такий чоловік, як Йов, що глумує, мов би пив воду,
And goeth in company with workers of iniquity, and walketh with wicked men.
Товаришує беззаконним і ходить з людьми безбожними?
For he hath said, It profiteth not a man if he delight himself in God.
Він бо сказав: Нема з того хісна чоловікові, як угоджає Богу.
Therefore hearken unto me, ye men of understanding: Far be wickedness from God, and wrong from the Almighty!
Слухайте ж, мужі мудрі, мене! Не може бути в Бога неправди, у Вседержителя — несправедливого суду,
For a man's work will he render to him, and cause every one to find according to [his] way.
Він бо дає чоловіку, що заробив дїлами, й після поступків мужа відплачує йому.
Yea, surely, God acteth not wickedly, and the Almighty perverteth not judgment.
Праведне слово, Бог кривди не чинить, і Вседержитель не вивертає суду.
Who hath entrusted to him the earth? and who hath disposed the whole world?
Хто окрім його дбає про землю? Хто дає лад у вселеннїй?
If he only thought of himself, [and] gathered unto him his spirit and his breath,
Оберни він серце своє до себе самого, й візьми дух її й диханнє її до себе, —
All flesh would expire together, and man would return to the dust.
Все живе зараз би зникло, прахом би люде взялися.
If now [thou hast] understanding, hear this: give ear to the voice of my words!
От же, коли маєш розум, то слухай й вважай на слова мої.
Should he that hateth right indeed govern? and wilt thou condemn the All-just?
Хто ненавидїв би правду, то як би він сьвітом правив? І можеш же ти найправеднїйшого обвиняти?
Shall one say to a king, Belial? to nobles, Wicked?
Хиба можна сказати цареві: ти — безбожник, а князям: ви — беззаконники?
[How then to him] that accepteth not the persons of princes, nor regardeth the rich man more than the poor? for they are all the work of his hands.
Та він не зважає на особи князїв і не волїє він багатого нїж убогого, бо всї вони — дїло рук його.
In a moment they die, even at midnight the people are convulsed and pass away; and the strong are taken away without hand.
Нагло вмірають вони; серед ночі зворушиться нарід, і вони зникають; і сильних проганяють не силою.
For his eyes are upon the ways of man, and he seeth all his steps.
Очі бо його над дорогами чоловіка, й бачить він кожний ступінь його.
There is no darkness, nor shadow of death, where the workers of iniquity may hide themselves.
Нема темряви, нї глухої тїнї, де б могли заховатись беззаконнующі.
For he doth not long consider a man, to bring him before God in judgment.
Опісля він уже не домагаєсь від чоловіка, щоб ставав на суд з Богом.
He breaketh in pieces mighty men without inquiry, and setteth others in their stead;
Він стирає можних без допиту й ставить других намість їх,
Since he knoweth their actions; and he overthroweth [them] in the night, and they are crushed.
Бо він виявляє дїла їх, і скидає їх одної ночі, й вони щезають,
He striketh them as wicked men in the open sight of others,
Як беззаконних, карає він їх перед очима в других.
Because they have turned back from him, and would consider none of his ways;
За те, що відхилились від його і всїх доріг його не хотїли розуміти,
So that they cause the cry of the poor to come unto him, and he heareth the cry of the afflicted.
Так що дійшов до його клик злиденних, і він почув стогни придавлених.
When he giveth quietness, who then will disturb? and when he hideth [his] face, who shall behold him? and this towards a nation, or towards a man alike;
Як упокій він дарує, — хто тодї потрівожить? як він своє лице заховає, хто на його спогляне? — все одно, чи народ, чи один чоловік,
That the ungodly man reign not, that the people be not ensnared.
Щоб лицемір не царював, блазнячи народ.
For hath he said unto God, I bear [chastisement], I will not offend;
От як треба до Бога говорити: Я потерпів кару, — більш не буду грішити;
What I see not, teach thou me; if I have done wrong, I will do so no more?
А чого я не розумію, — ти навчи мене, і скоро вчинив беззаконність, вже більше не буду.
Shall he recompense according to thy mind? for thou hast refused [his judgment]; for thou so choosest, and not I; speak then what thou knowest.
Чи то ж по твойму судові має він одплачувати? І як ти відкидаєш, то й ти маєш вибірати, а не я; говори ж, що знаєш.
Men of understanding will say to me, and a wise man who heareth me:
Люде розумні скажуть менї, а так само й кожний чоловік мудрий, що мене чує:
Job hath spoken without knowledge, and his words were not with intelligence.
Йов говорив нерозумно, й у словах його нема глузду.
Would that Job may be tried unto the end, because of [his] answers after the manner of evil men!
Я б хотїв, щоб Йова докладно питано, після відповідей його, які лицюють хиба людям безбожним.
