God Challenges Job
And Jehovah answered Job out of the whirlwind and said,
And Jehovah answered Job out of the whirlwind and said,
Тоді відповів Господь Йову із бурі й сказав:
Who is this that darkeneth counsel by words without knowledge?
„Хто́ то такий, що зате́мнює раду слова́ми без розуму?
Gird up now thy loins like a man; and I will demand of thee, and inform thou me.
Підпережи́ но ти сте́гна свої, як мужчи́на, а Я буду питати тебе, — ти ж Мені поясни!
Where wast thou when I founded the earth? Declare, if thou hast understanding.
Де́ ти був, коли землю осно́вував Я? Розкажи, якщо маєш знання́!
Who set the measures thereof -- if thou knowest? or who stretched a line upon it?
Хто осно́ви її положив, чи ти знаєш? Або хто́ розтягнув по ній шнура?
Whereupon were the foundations thereof sunken? or who laid its corner-stone,
У що підстави її позапу́щувані, або хто́ поклав камінь нарі́жний її,
When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?
коли ра́зом співали всі зо́рі пора́нні та радісний о́крик здіймали всі Божі сини?
And who shut up the sea with doors, when it burst forth, issuing out of the womb?
І хто море воро́тами загороди́в, як воно виступа́ло, немов би з утро́би вихо́дило,
When I made the cloud its garment, and thick darkness a swaddling band for it;
коли хмари поклав Я за одіж йому, а імлу́ — за його пелюшки́,
When I cut out for it my boundary, and set bars and doors,
і призна́чив йому Я границю Свою та поставив засу́ва й воро́та,
And said, Hitherto shalt thou come and no further, and here shall thy proud waves be stayed?
і сказав: „Аж досі ти ді́йдеш, не далі, і тут ось межа́ твоїх хвиль гордови́тих?“
Hast thou since thy days commanded the morning? hast thou caused the dawn to know its place,
Чи за своїх днів ти наказував ра́нкові? Чи досві́тній зорі́ показав її місце,
That it might take hold of the ends of the earth, and the wicked might be shaken out of it?
щоб хапа́лась за кі́нці землі та поси́пались з неї безбожні?
It is changed like the signet-clay; and [all things] stand forth as in a garment:
Земля змі́нюється, мов та глина печа́тки, і стають, немов о́діж, вони!
And from the wicked their light is withholden, and the uplifted arm is broken.
І нехай від безбожних їх світло віді́йметься, а високе раме́но злама́ється!
Hast thou entered as far as the springs of the sea? and hast thou walked in the recesses of the deep?
Чи ти схо́див коли аж до мо́рських джере́л, і чи ти перехо́джувався дном безодні?
Have the gates of death been revealed unto thee? and hast thou seen the gates of the shadow of death?
Чи для тебе відкриті були брами смерти, і чи бачив ти брами смерте́льної тіні?
Hath thine understanding compassed the breadths of the earth? Declare if thou knowest it all.
Чи широкість землі ти оглянув? Розкажи, якщо знаєш це все!
Where is the way to where light dwelleth? and the darkness, where is its place,
Де́ та доро́га, що світло на ній пробуває? А те́мрява — де її місце,
That thou shouldest take it to its bound, and that thou shouldest know the paths to its house?
щоб узяти її до границі її, і щоб знати стежки́ її дому?
Thou knowest, for thou wast then born, and the number of thy days is great!
Знаєш ти, бо тоді народився ж ти був, і велике число твоїх днів!
Hast thou entered into the storehouses of the snow, and hast thou seen the treasuries of the hail,
Чи дохо́див коли ти до схо́ванок снігу, і схо́ванки граду ти бачив,
Which I have reserved for the time of distress, for the day of battle and war?
які Я тримаю на час лихолі́ття, на день бо́ю й війни?
By what way is the light parted, [and] the east wind scattered upon the earth?
Якою дорогою ді́литься вітер, розпоро́шується по землі вітере́ць?
Who hath divided a channel for the rain-flood, and a way for the thunder's flash;
Хто для зливи прото́ку прові́в, а для громови́ці — дорогу,
To cause it to rain on the earth, where no one is; on the wilderness wherein there is not a man;
щоб дощи́ти на землю безлюдну, на пустиню, в якій чоловіка нема,
To satisfy the desolate and waste [ground], and to cause the sprout of the grass to spring forth?
щоб пустиню та пущу наси́чувати, і щоб забезпе́чити ви́хід траві?
Hath the rain a father? or who begetteth the drops of dew?
Чи є ба́тько в доща, чи хто кра́плі роси́ породи́в?
Out of whose womb cometh the ice? and the hoary frost of heaven, who bringeth it forth?
Із чиєї утро́би лід вийшов, а і́ній небесний — хто його породив?
When the waters lie hidden as in stone, and the face of the deep holdeth fast together.
Як камінь, тужа́віють води, а пове́рхня безо́дні ховається.
Canst thou fasten the bands of the Pleiades, or loosen the cords of Orion?
Чи зв'яжеш ти за́в'язки Волосожа́ру, чи розв'я́жеш віжки́ в Оріо́на?
Dost thou bring forth the constellations each in its season? or dost thou guide the Bear with her sons?
Чи ви́ведеш ча́су свого Зодія́ка, чи Во́за з синами його попрова́диш?
Knowest thou the ordinances of the heavens? dost thou determine their rule over the earth?
Чи ти знаєш уста́ви небе́с? Чи ти покладе́ш на землі їхню вла́ду?
Dost thou lift up thy voice to the clouds, that floods of waters may cover thee?
Чи піді́ймеш свій голос до хмар, — і багато води тебе вкриє?
Dost thou send forth lightnings that they may go, and say unto thee, Here we are?
Чи бли́скавки ти посилаєш, і пі́дуть вони, й тобі скажуть „Ось ми“?
Who hath put wisdom in the inward parts? or who hath given understanding to the mind?
Хто мудрість вкладає людині в нутро́? Або — хто́ дає се́рцеві розум?
Who numbereth the clouds with wisdom? or who poureth out the bottles of the heavens,
Хто мудрістю хмари зрахує, і хто може затримати небесні посу́ди,
When the dust runneth as into a molten mass, and the clods cleave fast together?
коли по́рох зливається в зли́вки, а кавалки злипаються?
Dost thou hunt the prey for the lioness, and dost thou satisfy the appetite of the young lions,
Чи здо́бич левиці ти зловиш, і заспоко́їш життя левчукі́в,
When they crouch in [their] dens, [and] abide in the thicket to lie in wait?
як вони по лего́вищах ту́ляться, на ча́тах сидять по куща́х?
