Death Comes to Good and Bad

For all this I laid to my heart and [indeed] to investigate all this, that the righteous, and the wise, and their works, are in the hand of God; man knoweth neither love nor hatred: all is before them.

Итак, поразмышлял я над всем этим и заключил, что и праведные, и мудрецы, и их дела — в руках Божьих, но никто не знает, что ожидает его: любовь или ненависть.

2

All things [come] alike to all: one event to the righteous and to the wicked, to the good, and to the clean, and to the unclean, to him that sacrificeth and to him that sacrificeth not: as is the good, so is the sinner; he that sweareth, as he that feareth an oath.

Все разделяют одну участь: праведник и нечестивый, добрый и злой, чистый и нечистый, приносящий жертву и не приносящий жертвы.

Как бывает с добрым,
так и с грешником,
как с дающим клятвы,
так и с тем, кто боится их давать.

This is an evil among all that is done under the sun, that one thing befalleth all: yea, also the heart of the children of men is full of evil, and madness is in their heart while they live; and after that, [they have to go] to the dead.

Это и есть то зло, что происходит повсюду под солнцем: одна участь ожидает всех! Сердца людей полны зла и безумия пока они живы, а после они отходят к умершим.

For to him that is joined to all the living there is hope; for a living dog is better than a dead lion.

Любой, кто жив, имеет надежду, даже живой собаке лучше, чем мертвому льву!

For the living know that they shall die; but the dead know not anything, neither have they any more a reward, for the memory of them is forgotten.

Ведь живые знают, что умрут,
а мертвые ничего не знают,
и уже не будет им награды,
и даже память о них утрачена.

Their love also, and their hatred, and their envy is already perished; neither have they any more for ever a portion in all that is done under the sun.

Их любовь, их ненависть
и их ревность уже исчезли,
и никогда более они не будут участвовать
во всем, что происходит под солнцем.

Enjoy Your Portion in This Life

Go, eat thy bread with joy, and drink thy wine with a merry heart; for God hath already accepted thy works.

Итак, иди и ешь с удовольствием свой хлеб и пей вино свое с радостью в сердце, потому что Богу угодны твои дела.

Let thy garments be always white, and let not thy head lack oil.

Всегда носи свою лучшую одежду и надуши волосы благовонным маслом.

Enjoy life with the wife whom thou lovest all the days of the life of thy vanity, which he hath given thee under the sun, all the days of thy vanity; for that is thy portion in life, and in thy labour wherein thou art labouring under the sun.

Наслаждайся жизнью со своей женой, которую ты любишь, во все дни твоей суетной жизни, что дал тебе Бог под солнцем. Ведь такова твоя доля в жизни и в труде твоем под солнцем.

Whatever thy hand findeth to do, do with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in Sheol, whither thou goest.

Все, что ты в силах делать, делай, потому что в мире мертвых,15 куда ты пойдешь, нет ни работы, ни размышления, ни знания, ни мудрости.

I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to the intelligent, nor yet favour to men of knowledge; but time and chance happeneth to them all.

И еще кое-что я видел под солнцем:

не обязательно в беге побеждают быстрые,
а в битве — храбрые,
не всегда у мудрых есть хлеб,
а у разумных — богатство,
как не всегда образованные пользуются благосклонностью,
потому что все зависит от времени и случая.

For man also knoweth not his time: as the fishes that are taken in an evil net, and as the birds that are taken with the snare, like them are the children of men snared in an evil time, when it falleth suddenly upon them.

Человек не знает когда придет его час:

как рыбы попадаются в губительную сеть,
или птицы — в силки,
так и люди бывают пойманы в день несчастья,
который приходит к ним нежданно.

Wisdom Better than Strength

This also have I seen as wisdom under the sun, and it was great unto me.

Я также видел под солнцем такой пример мудрости, который впечатлил меня:

There was a little city, and few men within it; and there came a great king against it, and encompassed it, and built great bulwarks against it:

был маленький город с небольшим населением. И могучий царь пошел против него, окружил его и провел большие осадные работы против него.

and there was found in it a poor wise man, who by his wisdom delivered the city; but no man remembered that poor man.

Но в том городе был мудрый бедняк, и он спас этот город своей мудростью. Однако после никто не вспомнил об этом бедном человеке.

16

Then said I, Wisdom is better than strength; but the poor man's wisdom is despised, and his words are not heard.

16

Тогда сказал я: «Мудрость лучше силы». Но мудростью бедняка пренебрегают и на слова его не обращают внимания.

17

The words of the wise are heard in quiet more than the cry of him that ruleth among fools.

Лучше внимать тихо сказанным словам мудреца,
чем крикам правителя глупых.

18

Wisdom is better than weapons of war; but one sinner destroyeth much good.

Мудрость лучше орудий войны,
но один согрешивший может погубить много доброго.
