English Standard Version

  • Jesus' Betrayal and Arrest

Jesus, having said these things, went out with his disciples beyond the torrent Cedron, where was a garden, into which he entered, he and his disciples.
  • Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus

When Jesus had spoken these words, he went out with his disciples across the brook Kidron, where there was a garden, which he and his disciples entered.
  • And Judas also, who delivered him up, knew the place, because Jesus was often there, in company with his disciples.
  • Now Judas, who betrayed him, also knew the place, for Jesus often met there with his disciples.
  • Judas therefore, having got the band, and officers of the chief priests and Pharisees, comes there with lanterns and torches and weapons.
  • So Judas, having procured a band of soldiers and some officers from the chief priests and the Pharisees, went there with lanterns and torches and weapons.
  • Jesus therefore, knowing all things that were coming upon him, went forth and said to them, Whom seek ye?
  • Then Jesus, knowing all that would happen to him, came forward and said to them, “Whom do you seek?”
  • They answered him, Jesus the Nazaraean. Jesus says to them, I am [he]. And Judas also, who delivered him up, stood with them.
  • They answered him, “Jesus of Nazareth.” Jesus said to them, “I am he.”a Judas, who betrayed him, was standing with them.
  • When therefore he said to them, I am [he], they went away backward and fell to the ground.
  • When Jesusb said to them, “I am he,” they drew back and fell to the ground.
  • He demanded of them therefore again, Whom seek ye? And they said, Jesus the Nazaraean.
  • So he asked them again, “Whom do you seek?” And they said, “Jesus of Nazareth.”
  • Jesus answered, I told you that I am [he]: if therefore ye seek me, let these go away;
  • Jesus answered, “I told you that I am he. So, if you seek me, let these men go.”
  • that the word might be fulfilled which he spoke, [As to] those whom thou hast given me, I have not lost one of them.
  • This was to fulfill the word that he had spoken: “Of those whom you gave me I have lost not one.”
  • Simon Peter therefore, having a sword, drew it, and smote the bondman of the high priest and cut off his right ear; and the bondman's name was Malchus.
  • Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servantc and cut off his right ear. (The servant’s name was Malchus.)
  • Jesus therefore said to Peter, Put the sword into the sheath; the cup which the Father has given me, shall I not drink it?
  • So Jesus said to Peter, “Put your sword into its sheath; shall I not drink the cup that the Father has given me?”
  • The band therefore, and the chiliarch, and the officers of the Jews, took Jesus and bound him:
  • Jesus Faces Annas and Caiaphas

So the band of soldiers and their captain and the officers of the Jewsd arrested Jesus and bound him.
  • and they led him away to Annas first; for he was father-in-law to Caiaphas, who was high priest that year.
  • First they led him to Annas, for he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was high priest that year.
  • But it was Caiaphas who counselled the Jews that it was better that one man should perish for the people.
  • It was Caiaphas who had advised the Jews that it would be expedient that one man should die for the people.
  • Peter's First Denial

    Now Simon Peter followed Jesus, and the other disciple. But that disciple was known to the high priest, and went in with Jesus into the palace of the high priest;
  • Peter Denies Jesus

Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple. Since that disciple was known to the high priest, he entered with Jesus into the courtyard of the high priest,
  • but Peter stood at the door without. The other disciple therefore, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to the porteress and brought in Peter.
  • but Peter stood outside at the door. So the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to the servant girl who kept watch at the door, and brought Peter in.
  • The maid therefore, who was porteress, says to Peter, Art thou also of the disciples of this man? He says, I am not.
  • The servant girl at the door said to Peter, “You also are not one of this man’s disciples, are you?” He said, “I am not.”
  • But the bondmen and officers, having made a fire of coals (for it was cold), stood and warmed themselves; and Peter was standing with them and warming himself.
  • Now the servantse and officers had made a charcoal fire, because it was cold, and they were standing and warming themselves. Peter also was with them, standing and warming himself.
  • Jesus Before the High Priest

The high priest therefore demanded of Jesus concerning his disciples and concerning his doctrine.
  • The High Priest Questions Jesus

The high priest then questioned Jesus about his disciples and his teaching.
  • Jesus answered him, I spoke openly to the world; I taught always in [the] synagogue and in the temple, where all the Jews come together, and in secret I have spoken nothing.
  • Jesus answered him, “I have spoken openly to the world. I have always taught in synagogues and in the temple, where all Jews come together. I have said nothing in secret.
  • Why demandest thou of me? Demand of those who have heard, what I have spoken to them; behold, they know what I have said.
  • Why do you ask me? Ask those who have heard me what I said to them; they know what I said.”
  • But as he said these things, one of the officers who stood by gave a blow on the face to Jesus, saying, Answerest thou the high priest thus?
  • When he had said these things, one of the officers standing by struck Jesus with his hand, saying, “Is that how you answer the high priest?”
  • Jesus answered him, If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil; but if well, why smitest thou me?
  • Jesus answered him, “If what I said is wrong, bear witness about the wrong; but if what I said is right, why do you strike me?”
  • Annas [then] had sent him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.
  • Annas then sent him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.
  • Peter's Second and Third Denials

But Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. They said therefore to him, Art thou also of his disciples? He denied, and said, I am not.
  • Peter Denies Jesus Again

Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. So they said to him, “You also are not one of his disciples, are you?” He denied it and said, “I am not.”
  • One of the bondmen of the high priest, who was kinsman of him whose ear Peter cut off, says, Did not I see thee in the garden with him?
  • One of the servants of the high priest, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, asked, “Did I not see you in the garden with him?”
  • Peter denied therefore again, and immediately [the] cock crew.
  • Peter again denied it, and at once a rooster crowed.
  • Jesus Before Pilate

They lead therefore Jesus from Caiaphas to the praetorium; and it was early morn. And *they* entered not into the praetorium, that they might not be defiled, but eat the passover.
  • Jesus Before Pilate

Then they led Jesus from the house of Caiaphas to the governor’s headquarters.f It was early morning. They themselves did not enter the governor’s headquarters, so that they would not be defiled, but could eat the Passover.
  • Pilate therefore went out to them and said, What accusation do ye bring against this man?
  • So Pilate went outside to them and said, “What accusation do you bring against this man?”
  • They answered and said to him, If this [man] were not an evildoer, we should not have delivered him up to thee.
  • They answered him, “If this man were not doing evil, we would not have delivered him over to you.”
  • Pilate therefore said to them, Take him, ye, and judge him according to your law. The Jews therefore said to him, It is not permitted to us to put any one to death;
  • Pilate said to them, “Take him yourselves and judge him by your own law.” The Jews said to him, “It is not lawful for us to put anyone to death.”
  • that the word of Jesus might be fulfilled which he spoke, signifying what death he should die.
  • This was to fulfill the word that Jesus had spoken to show by what kind of death he was going to die.
  • Pilate therefore entered again into the praetorium and called Jesus, and said to him, Thou art the king of the Jews?
  • My Kingdom Is Not of This World

So Pilate entered his headquarters again and called Jesus and said to him, “Are you the King of the Jews?”
  • Jesus answered [him], Dost thou say this of thyself, or have others said it to thee concerning me?
  • Jesus answered, “Do you say this of your own accord, or did others say it to you about me?”
  • Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? Thy nation and the chief priests have delivered thee up to me: what hast thou done?
  • Pilate answered, “Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests have delivered you over to me. What have you done?”
  • Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world; if my kingdom were of this world, my servants had fought that I might not be delivered up to the Jews; but now my kingdom is not from hence.
  • Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would have been fighting, that I might not be delivered over to the Jews. But my kingdom is not from the world.”
  • Pilate therefore said to him, Thou art then a king? Jesus answered, Thou sayest [it], that I am a king. I have been born for this, and for this I have come into the world, that I might bear witness to the truth. Every one that is of the truth hears my voice.
  • Then Pilate said to him, “So you are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. For this purpose I was born and for this purpose I have come into the world — to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.”
  • Pilate says to him, What is truth? And having said this he went out again to the Jews, and says to them, I find no fault whatever in him.
  • Pilate said to him, “What is truth?”
After he had said this, he went back outside to the Jews and told them, “I find no guilt in him.
  • But ye have a custom that I release [some] one to you at the passover; will ye therefore that I release unto you the king of the Jews?
  • But you have a custom that I should release one man for you at the Passover. So do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?”
  • They cried therefore again all, saying, Not this [man], but Barabbas. Now Barabbas was a robber.
  • They cried out again, “Not this man, but Barabbas!” Now Barabbas was a robber.g
