Stephen Addresses the Sanhedrin
And the high priest said, Are these things then so?
And the high priest said, Are these things then so?
Каже тодї архиєрей: Чи справдї се так?
And he said, Brethren and fathers, hearken. The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham when he was in Mesopotamia, before he dwelt in Charran,
Він же рече: Мужі брати й батьки, слухайте: Бог слави явивсь отцеві нашому Авраамові, як був у Мезопотамії, перш нїж оселив ся він у Харані,
and said to him, Go out of thy land and out of thy kindred, and come into the land which I will shew thee.
і рече до него: вийди з землї твоєї, і з родини твоєї, та йди в землю, що я тобі покажу.
Then going out of the land of the Chaldeans he dwelt in Charran, and thence, after his father died, he removed him into this land in which *ye* now dwell.
Тодї вийшовши з землї Халдейської, оселив ся він у Харанї, а звідтіля, як умер батько його, переселив його (Бог) у сю землю, де ви тепер живете.
And he did not give him an inheritance in it, not even what his foot could stand on; and promised to give it to him for a possession, and to his seed after him, when he had no child.
І не дав йому наслїддя в нїй нї на ступінь ноги, а обіцяв дати йому її в державу і насїнню його після него, як не було в него дитини.
And God spoke thus: His seed shall be a sojourner in a strange land, and they shall enslave them and evil entreat [them] four hundred years;
Глаголав же Бог так, що буде насїннє його захожим у землї чужій, і підневолять його, і мучити муть чотириста років.
and the nation to which they shall be in bondage will *I* judge, said God; and after these things they shall come forth and serve me in this place.
А народ, котрому служити муть, буду я судити, рече Бог; і після того вийдуть вони, та служити муть менї у місцї сьому.
And he gave to him [the] covenant of circumcision; and thus he begat Isaac and circumcised him the eighth day; and Isaac Jacob, and Jacob the twelve patriarchs.
І дав йому завіт обрізання; і так породив Ісаака, та й обрізав його восьмого дня; а Ісаак породив Якова, а Яков дванайцять патриярхів.
And the patriarchs, envying Joseph, sold him away into Egypt. And God was with him,
А патриярхи через зависть продали Йосифа в Єгипет; і був з ним Бог,
and delivered him out of all his tribulations, and gave him favour and wisdom in the sight of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and he appointed him chief over Egypt and all his house.
і визволив його з усякого горя його, і дав йому ласку та премудрість перед Фараоном, царем Єгипецьким; і настановив його той правителем над Єгиптом і над усією господою своєю.
But a famine came upon all the land of Egypt and Canaan, and great distress, and our fathers found no food.
Прийшла ж голоднеча на всю землю Єгипецьку та Канаанську, та горе велике; і не знайшли поживи отцї наші.
But Jacob, having heard of there being corn in Egypt, sent out our fathers first;
Почувши ж Яков, що є пшениця в Єгиптї, післав отцїв наших найперш.
and the second time Joseph was made known to his brethren, and the family of Joseph became known to Pharaoh.
А другого разу був пізнаний Йосиф од братів своїх; і став ся знаним Фараонові рід Йосифів.
And Joseph sent and called down to him his father Jacob and all [his] kindred, seventy-five souls.
Піславши ж Йосиф, прикликав батька свого Якова і всю родину свою, сїмдесять і пять душ.
And Jacob went down into Egypt and died, he and our fathers,
Прийшов же Яков у Єгипет, і вмер, він і отцї наші,
and were carried over to Sychem and placed in the sepulchre which Abraham bought for a sum of money of the sons of Emmor the [father] of Sychem.
і перенесено їх у Сихем, і положено в гробі, що купив Авраам цїною срібла в синів Ємора Сихемевого.
But as the time of promise drew near which God had promised to Abraham, the people increased and multiplied in Egypt,
Як же наближував ся час обітування, котрим кляв ся Бог Авраамові, ріс народ і намножувавсь у Єгиптї,
until another king over Egypt arose who did not know Joseph.
аж поки настав инший цар, що не знав уже Йосифа.
*He* dealt subtilly with our race, and evil entreated the fathers, casting out their infants that they might not live.
Сей, хитрий проти роду нашого, мучив отцїв наших, щоб викидали дїток своїх, щоб не бути їм живими.
In which time Moses was born, and was exceedingly lovely, who was nourished three months in the house of his father.
Того часу родивсь Мойсей, і був угоден Богу; годовано його три місяцї в хатї батька його.
And when he was cast out, the daughter of Pharaoh took him up, and brought him up for herself [to be] for a son.
Як же викинуто його, взяла його дочка Фараонова, й вигодувала його собі за сина.
And Moses was instructed in all [the] wisdom of the Egyptians, and he was mighty in his words and deeds.
І навчивсь Мойсей усієї Єгипецької мудрости, був же потужний у словах і в дїлах.
And when a period of forty years was fulfilled to him, it came into his heart to look upon his brethren, the sons of Israel;
Як же сповнивсь йому сороколїтний час, забажало серце його одвідати братів своїх, синів Ізраїлевих.
and seeing a certain one wronged, he defended [him], and avenged him that was being oppressed, smiting the Egyptian.
І, побачивши одного обиженого, уступив ся за него, тай помстив ся за обиженого, вбивши Єгиптянина.
For he thought that his brethren would understand that God by his hand was giving them deliverance. But they understood not.
Думав же, що зрозуміють брати його, що Бог його рукою дає їм спасеннє; вони ж не зрозуміли.
And on the morrow he shewed himself to them as they were contending, and compelled them to peace, saying, *Ye* are brethren, why do ye wrong one another?
Другого ж дня явив ся їм, як бились, і приводив їх до поєднання, говорячи: Мужі, ви брати; за що ви обижаєте один одного?
But he that was wronging his neighbour thrust him away, saying, Who established thee ruler and judge over us?
Той же, що обижав ближнього, відопхнув його, кажучи: Хто тебе настановив князем і суддею над нами?
Dost *thou* wish to kill me as thou killedst the Egyptian yesterday?
Чи й мене хочеш убити, як убив єси вчора Єгиптянина?
And Moses fled at this saying, and became a sojourner in the land of Madiam, where he begat two sons.
Утїк же Мойсей за словом сим, і зайшов у землю Мадиямську, де зродив двох синів.
And when forty years were fulfilled, an angel appeared to him in the wilderness of mount Sinai, in a flame of fire of a bush.
А як уплило сорок років, явивсь йому в пустинї під горою Синаєм ангел Господень у поломї огняного куща.
And Moses seeing it wondered at the vision; and as he went up to consider it, there was a voice of [the] Lord,
Мойсей же побачивши дивувавсь видїннєм; як же приступив він, щоб придивитись, роздав ся голос Господень до него:
*I* am the God of thy fathers, the God of Abraham, and of Isaac, and of Jacob. And Moses trembled, and durst not consider [it].
Я Бог отцїв твоїх, і Бог Авраамів, і Бог Ісааків, і Бог Яковів. Затрусившись же Мойсей, не одважив ся придивлятись.
And the Lord said to him, Loose the sandal of thy feet, for the place on which thou standest is holy ground.
Рече ж йому Господь: Роззуй обувє ніг твоїх, бо місце, на котрому стоїш, — земля сьвята.
I have surely seen the ill treatment of my people which is in Egypt, and I have heard their groan, and have come down to take them out of it; and now, come, I will send thee to Egypt.
Дивившись видїв я муку народу мого в Єгиптї, і стогнаннє його чув я, і зійшов визволити його. І тепер іди, пішлю тебе в Єгипет.
This Moses, whom they refused, saying, Who made thee ruler and judge? him did God send [to be] a ruler and deliverer with the hand of the angel who appeared to him in the bush.
Сього Мойсея, котрого відцурались вони, кажучи: хто тебе настановив князем та суддею над нами? сього Бог князем і збавителем післав рукою ангела, що явивсь йому в кущі (корчі).
*He* led them out, having wrought wonders and signs in the land of Egypt, and in the Red sea, and in the wilderness forty years.
Сей вивів їх, робивши чудеса та ознаки в Єгиптї, й на Червоному морі, і в пустинї сорок років.
This is the Moses who said to the sons of Israel, A prophet shall God raise up to you out of your brethren like me [him shall ye hear].
Се той Мойсей, що сказав синам Ізраїлевим: Поставить вам Господь Бог ваш пророка з братів ваших, як мене; Його слухайте.
This is he who was in the assembly in the wilderness, with the angel who spoke to him in the mount Sinai, and with our fathers; who received living oracles to give to us;
Се той, що був у зборі в пустинї з ангелом, котрий промовляв до него на горі Синаї, та з отцями нашими, що прийняв живі слова, щоб дати нам.
to whom our fathers would not be subject, but thrust [him] from them, and in their hearts turned back to Egypt,
Котрому не хотїли слухняними бути отцї наші, а відопхнули його, і обернулись серцем у Єгипет,
saying to Aaron, Make us gods who shall go before us; for this Moses, who brought us out of the land of Egypt, we know not what has happened to him.
говорячи Ааронові: Зроби нам богів, котрі б ійшли перед нами; бо Мойсей той, що вивів нас із Єгипту, не знаємо, що стало ся з ним.
And they made a calf in those days, and offered sacrifice to the idol, and rejoiced in the works of their own hands.
І зробили телця в днї ті, і приносили посьвяти ідолу, і втїшались дїлами рук своїх.
But God turned and delivered them up to serve the host of heaven; as it is written in [the] book of the prophets, Have ye offered me victims and sacrifices forty years in the wilderness, O house of Israel?
Одвернув ся ж Бог і попустив їх кланятись воїнству небесному, як написано в книзї пророків: Хиба заколене та посьвяти приносили ви менї сорок років у пустинї, доме Ізраїлїв?
Yea, ye took up the tent of Moloch, and the star of [your] god Remphan, the forms which ye made to do homage to them; and I will transport you beyond Babylon.
Нї, ви підняли намет Молохів і зорю бога вашого Ремфана, боввани, що поробили на поклоненнє їм; і переселю я вас дальш Вавилона.
Our fathers had the tent of the testimony in the wilderness, as he that spoke to Moses commanded to make it according to the model which he had seen;
Намет сьвідчення був у отцїв наших у пустинї, як звелїв Той, хто глаголав Мойсейові зробити його по взорцеві, який бачив.
which also our fathers, receiving from their predecessors, brought in with Joshua when they entered into possession of [the lands of] the nations, whom God drove out from [the] face of our fathers, until the days of David;
Котрий також узявши отцї наші винесли з Ісусом у державу поган, що прогнав Бог од лиця отцїв наших, аж до днїв Давидових.
who found favour before God, and asked to find a tabernacle for the God of Jacob;
Котрий знайшов ласку перед Богом, і просив, щоб знайти намет для Бога Якового.
But the Most High dwells not in [places] made with hands; as says the prophet,
Тільки ж Вишнїй не в рукотворних церквах домує, як глаголе пророк:
The heaven [is] my throne and the earth the footstool of my feet: what house will ye build me? saith [the] Lord, or where [is the] place of my rest?
Небо менї престол, а земля підніжок ніг моїх; який храм збудуєте менї? рече Господь, або яке місце відпочинку мого?
O stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, *ye* do always resist the Holy Spirit; as your fathers, *ye* also.
Люде тугошиі і необрізані серцем і ушима, ви завсїди Духові сьвятому противитесь; як батьки ваші, так і ви.
Which of the prophets have not your fathers persecuted? and they have slain those who announced beforehand concerning the coming of the Just One, of whom *ye* have now become deliverers up and murderers!
Кого з пророків не гонили батьки ваші? і повбивали тих, що наперед звіщали про прихід Праведного, котрого ви тепер зрадниками й убийцями стались.
who have received the law as ordained by [the] ministry of angels, and have not kept [it].
Ви прийняли закон через розпорядки ангелів, та й не хоронили його.
The Stoning of Stephen
And hearing these things they were cut to the heart, and gnashed their teeth against him.

Почувши ж се, запалали серцем своїм, і скреготали зубами на него.
But being full of [the] Holy Spirit, having fixed his eyes on heaven, he saw [the] glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God,
Він же, будучи повний сьвятого Духа, споглянувши на небо, побачив славу Божу, й Ісуса, стоячого по правицї у Бога,
and said, Lo, I behold the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing at the right hand of God.
і рече: Ось, виджу небеса відчинені, і Сина чоловічого, стоячого по правицї в Бога.
And they cried out with a loud voice, and held their ears, and rushed upon him with one accord;
Вони ж закричали голосом великим, позатуляли уші свої, та й кинулись однодушно на него,
and having cast [him] out of the city, they stoned [him]. And the witnesses laid aside their clothes at the feet of a young man called Saul.
і, випровадивши за город, укаменували його; а сьвідки поклали одежу свою у ногах у молодця, званого Савлом,
And they stoned Stephen, praying, and saying, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.
і каменували Стефана, молячогось і глаголючого: Господи Ісусе, прийми дух мій.
