Darby Bible Translation

New Living Translation

  • Children of God

See what love the Father has given to us, that we should be called [the] children of God. For this reason the world knows us not, because it knew him not.
  • See how very much our Father loves us, for he calls us his children, and that is what we are! But the people who belong to this world don’t recognize that we are God’s children because they don’t know him.
  • Beloved, now are we children of God, and what we shall be has not yet been manifested; we know that if it is manifested we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is.
  • Dear friends, we are already God’s children, but he has not yet shown us what we will be like when Christ appears. But we do know that we will be like him, for we will see him as he really is.
  • And every one that has this hope in him purifies himself, even as *he* is pure.
  • And all who have this eager expectation will keep themselves pure, just as he is pure.
  • Every one that practises sin practises also lawlessness; and sin is lawlessness.
  • Everyone who sins is breaking God’s law, for all sin is contrary to the law of God.
  • And ye know that *he* has been manifested that he might take away our sins; and in him sin is not.
  • And you know that Jesus came to take away our sins, and there is no sin in him.
  • Whoever abides in him, does not sin: whoever sins, has not seen him or known him.
  • Anyone who continues to live in him will not sin. But anyone who keeps on sinning does not know him or understand who he is.
  • Children, let no man lead you astray; he that practises righteousness is righteous, even as *he* is righteous.
  • Dear children, don’t let anyone deceive you about this: When people do what is right, it shows that they are righteous, even as Christ is righteous.
  • He that practises sin is of the devil; for from [the] beginning the devil sins. To this end the Son of God has been manifested, that he might undo the works of the devil.
  • But when people keep on sinning, it shows that they belong to the devil, who has been sinning since the beginning. But the Son of God came to destroy the works of the devil.
  • Whoever has been begotten of God does not practise sin, because his seed abides in him, and he cannot sin, because he has been begotten of God.
  • Those who have been born into God’s family do not make a practice of sinning, because God’s lifea is in them. So they can’t keep on sinning, because they are children of God.
  • In this are manifest the children of God and the children of the devil. Whoever does not practise righteousness is not of God, and he who does not love his brother.
  • So now we can tell who are children of God and who are children of the devil. Anyone who does not live righteously and does not love other believersb does not belong to God.
  • Love One Another

For this is the message which ye have heard from the beginning, that we should love one another:

  • Love One Another

This is the message you have heard from the beginning: We should love one another.
  • not as Cain was of the wicked one, and slew his brother; and on account of what slew he him? because his works were wicked, and those of his brother righteous.
  • We must not be like Cain, who belonged to the evil one and killed his brother. And why did he kill him? Because Cain had been doing what was evil, and his brother had been doing what was righteous.
  • Do not wonder, brethren, if the world hate you.
  • So don’t be surprised, dear brothers and sisters,c if the world hates you.
  • *We* know that we have passed from death to life, because we love the brethren. He who does not love [his] brother abides in death.
  • If we love our brothers and sisters who are believers,d it proves that we have passed from death to life. But a person who has no love is still dead.
  • Every one that hates his brother is a murderer, and ye know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.
  • Anyone who hates another brother or sistere is really a murderer at heart. And you know that murderers don’t have eternal life within them.
  • Hereby we have known love, because *he* has laid down his life for us; and *we* ought for the brethren to lay down [our] lives.
  • We know what real love is because Jesus gave up his life for us. So we also ought to give up our lives for our brothers and sisters.
  • But whoso may have the world's substance, and see his brother having need, and shut up his bowels from him, how abides the love of God in him?
  • If someone has enough money to live well and sees a brother or sisterf in need but shows no compassion — how can God’s love be in that person?
  • Children, let us not love with word, nor with tongue, but in deed and in truth.
  • Dear children, let’s not merely say that we love each other; let us show the truth by our actions.
  • And hereby we shall know that we are of the truth, and shall persuade our hearts before him --
  • Our actions will show that we belong to the truth, so we will be confident when we stand before God.
  • that if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart and knows all things.
  • Even if we feel guilty, God is greater than our feelings, and he knows everything.
  • Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, we have boldness towards God,
  • Dear friends, if we don’t feel guilty, we can come to God with bold confidence.
  • and whatsoever we ask we receive from him, because we keep his commandments, and practise the things which are pleasing in his sight.
  • And we will receive from him whatever we ask because we obey him and do the things that please him.
  • And this is his commandment, that we believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and that we love one another, even as he has given us commandment.
  • And this is his commandment: We must believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and love one another, just as he commanded us.
  • And he that keeps his commandments abides in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abides in us, by the Spirit which he has given to us.
  • Those who obey God’s commandments remain in fellowship with him, and he with them. And we know he lives in us because the Spirit he gave us lives in us.
