  • The Resurrection of Christ

    But I make known to you, brethren, the glad tidings which I announced to you, which also ye received, in which also ye stand,
  • The Resurrection of Christ

    Let me now remind you, dear brothers and sisters,a of the Good News I preached to you before. You welcomed it then, and you still stand firm in it.
  • by which also ye are saved, (if ye hold fast the word which I announced to you as the glad tidings,) unless indeed ye have believed in vain.
  • It is this Good News that saves you if you continue to believe the message I told you — unless, of course, you believed something that was never true in the first place.b
  • For I delivered to you, in the first place, what also I had received, that Christ died for our sins, according to the scriptures;
  • I passed on to you what was most important and what had also been passed on to me. Christ died for our sins, just as the Scriptures said.
  • and that he was buried; and that he was raised the third day, according to the scriptures;
  • He was buried, and he was raised from the dead on the third day, just as the Scriptures said.
  • and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve.
  • He was seen by Peterc and then by the Twelve.
  • Then he appeared to above five hundred brethren at once, of whom the most remain until now, but some also have fallen asleep.
  • After that, he was seen by more than 500 of his followersd at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have died.
  • Then he appeared to James; then to all the apostles;
  • Then he was seen by James and later by all the apostles.
  • and last of all, as to an abortion, he appeared to *me* also.
  • Last of all, as though I had been born at the wrong time, I also saw him.
  • For *I* am the least of the apostles, who am not fit to be called apostle, because I have persecuted the assembly of God.
  • For I am the least of all the apostles. In fact, I’m not even worthy to be called an apostle after the way I persecuted God’s church.
  • But by God's grace I am what I am; and his grace, which [was] towards me, has not been vain; but I have laboured more abundantly than they all, but not *I*, but the grace of God which [was] with me.
  • But whatever I am now, it is all because God poured out his special favor on me — and not without results. For I have worked harder than any of the other apostles; yet it was not I but God who was working through me by his grace.
  • Whether, therefore, I or they, thus we preach, and thus ye have believed.
  • So it makes no difference whether I preach or they preach, for we all preach the same message you have already believed.
  • The Resurrection of the Dead

    Now if Christ is preached that he is raised from among [the] dead, how say some among you that there is not a resurrection of [those that are] dead?

  • The Resurrection of the Dead

    But tell me this — since we preach that Christ rose from the dead, why are some of you saying there will be no resurrection of the dead?
  • But if there is not a resurrection of [those that are] dead, neither is Christ raised:
  • For if there is no resurrection of the dead, then Christ has not been raised either.
  • but if Christ is not raised, then, indeed, vain also [is] our preaching, and vain also your faith.
  • And if Christ has not been raised, then all our preaching is useless, and your faith is useless.
  • And we are found also false witnesses of God; for we have witnessed concerning God that he raised the Christ, whom he has not raised if indeed [those that are] dead are not raised.
  • And we apostles would all be lying about God — for we have said that God raised Christ from the grave. But that can’t be true if there is no resurrection of the dead.
  • For if [those that are] dead are not raised, neither is Christ raised;
  • And if there is no resurrection of the dead, then Christ has not been raised.
  • but if Christ be not raised, your faith [is] vain; ye are yet in your sins.
  • And if Christ has not been raised, then your faith is useless and you are still guilty of your sins.
  • Then indeed also those who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished.
  • In that case, all who have died believing in Christ are lost!
  • If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are [the] most miserable of all men.
  • And if our hope in Christ is only for this life, we are more to be pitied than anyone in the world.
  • The Order of Resurrection

    (But now Christ is raised from among [the] dead, first-fruits of those fallen asleep.
  • But in fact, Christ has been raised from the dead. He is the first of a great harvest of all who have died.
  • For since by man [came] death, by man also resurrection of [those that are] dead.
  • So you see, just as death came into the world through a man, now the resurrection from the dead has begun through another man.
  • For as in the Adam all die, thus also in the Christ all shall be made alive.
  • Just as everyone dies because we all belong to Adam, everyone who belongs to Christ will be given new life.
  • But each in his own rank: [the] first-fruits, Christ; then those that are the Christ's at his coming.
  • But there is an order to this resurrection: Christ was raised as the first of the harvest; then all who belong to Christ will be raised when he comes back.
  • Then the end, when he gives up the kingdom to him [who is] God and Father; when he shall have annulled all rule and all authority and power.
  • After that the end will come, when he will turn the Kingdom over to God the Father, having destroyed every ruler and authority and power.
  • For he must reign until he put all enemies under his feet.
  • For Christ must reign until he humbles all his enemies beneath his feet.
  • [The] last enemy [that] is annulled [is] death.
  • And the last enemy to be destroyed is death.
  • For he has put all things in subjection under his feet. But when he says that all things are put in subjection, [it is] evident that [it is] except him who put all things in subjection to him.
  • For the Scriptures say, “God has put all things under his authority.”e (Of course, when it says “all things are under his authority,” that does not include God himself, who gave Christ his authority.)
  • But when all things shall have been brought into subjection to him, then the Son also himself shall be placed in subjection to him who put all things in subjection to him, that God may be all in all.)
  • Then, when all things are under his authority, the Son will put himself under God’s authority, so that God, who gave his Son authority over all things, will be utterly supreme over everything everywhere.
  • Since what shall the baptised for the dead do if [those that are] dead rise not at all? why also are they baptised for them?
  • If the dead will not be raised, what point is there in people being baptized for those who are dead? Why do it unless the dead will someday rise again?
  • Why do *we* also endanger ourselves every hour?
  • And why should we ourselves risk our lives hour by hour?
  • Daily I die, by your boasting which I have in Christ Jesus our Lord.
  • For I swear, dear brothers and sisters, that I face death daily. This is as certain as my pride in what Christ Jesus our Lord has done in you.
  • If, [to speak] after the manner of man, I have fought with beasts in Ephesus, what is the profit to me if [those that are] dead do not rise? let us eat and drink; for to-morrow we die.
  • And what value was there in fighting wild beasts — those people of Ephesusf — if there will be no resurrection from the dead? And if there is no resurrection, “Let’s feast and drink, for tomorrow we die!”g
  • Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners.
  • Don’t be fooled by those who say such things, for “bad company corrupts good character.”
  • Awake up righteously, and sin not; for some are ignorant of God: I speak to you as a matter of shame.
  • Think carefully about what is right, and stop sinning. For to your shame I say that some of you don’t know God at all.
  • The Resurrection Body

    But some one will say, How are the dead raised? and with what body do they come?

  • The Resurrection Body

    But someone may ask, “How will the dead be raised? What kind of bodies will they have?”
  • Fool; what *thou* sowest is not quickened unless it die.
  • What a foolish question! When you put a seed into the ground, it doesn’t grow into a plant unless it dies first.
  • And what thou sowest, thou sowest not the body that shall be, but a bare grain: it may be of wheat, or some one of the rest:
  • And what you put in the ground is not the plant that will grow, but only a bare seed of wheat or whatever you are planting.
  • and God gives to it a body as he has pleased, and to each of the seeds its own body.
  • Then God gives it the new body he wants it to have. A different plant grows from each kind of seed.
  • Every flesh [is] not the same flesh, but one [is] of men, and another flesh of beasts, and another [flesh] of birds, and another of fishes.
  • Similarly there are different kinds of flesh — one kind for humans, another for animals, another for birds, and another for fish.
  • And [there are] heavenly bodies, and earthly bodies: but different is the glory of the heavenly, different that of the earthly:
  • There are also bodies in the heavens and bodies on the earth. The glory of the heavenly bodies is different from the glory of the earthly bodies.
  • one [the] sun's glory, and another [the] moon's glory, and another [the] stars' glory; for star differs from star in glory.
  • The sun has one kind of glory, while the moon and stars each have another kind. And even the stars differ from each other in their glory.
  • Thus also [is] the resurrection of the dead. It is sown in corruption, it is raised in incorruptibility.
  • It is the same way with the resurrection of the dead. Our earthly bodies are planted in the ground when we die, but they will be raised to live forever.
  • It is sown in dishonour, it is raised in glory. It is sown in weakness, it is raised in power.
  • Our bodies are buried in brokenness, but they will be raised in glory. They are buried in weakness, but they will be raised in strength.
  • It is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body: if there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual [one].
  • They are buried as natural human bodies, but they will be raised as spiritual bodies. For just as there are natural bodies, there are also spiritual bodies.
  • Thus also it is written, The first man Adam became a living soul; the last Adam a quickening spirit.
  • The Scriptures tell us, “The first man, Adam, became a living person.”h But the last Adam — that is, Christ — is a life-giving Spirit.
  • But that which is spiritual [was] not first, but that which is natural, then that which is spiritual:
  • What comes first is the natural body, then the spiritual body comes later.
  • the first man out of [the] earth, made of dust; the second man, out of heaven.
  • Adam, the first man, was made from the dust of the earth, while Christ, the second man, came from heaven.
  • Such as he made of dust, such also those made of dust; and such as the heavenly [one], such also the heavenly [ones].
  • Earthly people are like the earthly man, and heavenly people are like the heavenly man.
  • And as we have borne the image of the [one] made of dust, we shall bear also the image of the heavenly [one].
  • Just as we are now like the earthly man, we will someday be likei the heavenly man.
  • Where O Death is Your Victory?

    But this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit God's kingdom, nor does corruption inherit incorruptibility.
  • What I am saying, dear brothers and sisters, is that our physical bodies cannot inherit the Kingdom of God. These dying bodies cannot inherit what will last forever.
  • Behold, I tell you a mystery: We shall not all fall asleep, but we shall all be changed,
  • But let me reveal to you a wonderful secret. We will not all die, but we will all be transformed!
  • in an instant, in [the] twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet; for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and *we* shall be changed.
  • It will happen in a moment, in the blink of an eye, when the last trumpet is blown. For when the trumpet sounds, those who have died will be raised to live forever. And we who are living will also be transformed.
  • For this corruptible must needs put on incorruptibility, and this mortal put on immortality.
  • For our dying bodies must be transformed into bodies that will never die; our mortal bodies must be transformed into immortal bodies.
  • But when this corruptible shall have put on incorruptibility, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall come to pass the word written: Death has been swallowed up in victory.
  • Then, when our dying bodies have been transformed into bodies that will never die,j this Scripture will be fulfilled:
    “Death is swallowed up in victory.k
  • Where, O death, [is] thy sting? where, O death, thy victory?
  • O death, where is your victory?
    O death, where is your sting?l
  • Now the sting of death [is] sin, and the power of sin the law;
  • For sin is the sting that results in death, and the law gives sin its power.
  • but thanks to God, who gives us the victory by our Lord Jesus Christ.
  • But thank God! He gives us victory over sin and death through our Lord Jesus Christ.
  • So then, my beloved brethren, be firm, immovable, abounding always in the work of the Lord, knowing that your toil is not in vain in [the] Lord.
  • So, my dear brothers and sisters, be strong and immovable. Always work enthusiastically for the Lord, for you know that nothing you do for the Lord is ever useless.
