Darby Bible Translation

New Living Translation

  • God Loves a Cheerful Giver

    For concerning the ministration which [is] for the saints, it is superfluous my writing to you.
  • The Collection for Christians in Jerusalem

    I really don’t need to write to you about this ministry of giving for the believers in Jerusalem.a
  • For I know your readiness, which I boast of as respects you to Macedonians, that Achaia is prepared since a year ago, and the zeal [reported] of you has stimulated the mass [of the brethren].
  • For I know how eager you are to help, and I have been boasting to the churches in Macedonia that you in Greeceb were ready to send an offering a year ago. In fact, it was your enthusiasm that stirred up many of the Macedonian believers to begin giving.
  • But I have sent the brethren, in order that our boasting about you may not be made void in this respect, in order that, as I have said, ye may be prepared;
  • But I am sending these brothers to be sure you really are ready, as I have been telling them, and that your money is all collected. I don’t want to be wrong in my boasting about you.
  • lest haply, if Macedonians come with me and find you unprepared, *we*, that we say not *ye*, may be put to shame in this confidence.
  • We would be embarrassed — not to mention your own embarrassment — if some Macedonian believers came with me and found that you weren’t ready after all I had told them!
  • I thought it necessary therefore to beg the brethren that they would come to you, and complete beforehand your fore-announced blessing, that this may be ready thus as blessing, and not as got out of you.
  • So I thought I should send these brothers ahead of me to make sure the gift you promised is ready. But I want it to be a willing gift, not one given grudgingly.
  • But this [is true], he that sows sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he that sows in [the spirit of] blessing shall reap also in blessing:
  • Remember this — a farmer who plants only a few seeds will get a small crop. But the one who plants generously will get a generous crop.
  • each according as he is purposed in his heart; not grievingly, or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver.
  • You must each decide in your heart how much to give. And don’t give reluctantly or in response to pressure. “For God loves a person who gives cheerfully.”c
  • But God is able to make every gracious gift abound towards you, that, having in every way always all-sufficiency, ye may abound to every good work:
  • And God will generously provide all you need. Then you will always have everything you need and plenty left over to share with others.
  • according as it is written, He has scattered abroad, he has given to the poor, his righteousness remains for ever.
  • As the Scriptures say,
    “They share freely and give generously to the poor.
    Their good deeds will be remembered forever.”d
  • Now he that supplies seed to the sower and bread for eating shall supply and make abundant your sowing, and increase the fruits of your righteousness:
  • For God is the one who provides seed for the farmer and then bread to eat. In the same way, he will provide and increase your resources and then produce a great harvest of generositye in you.
  • enriched in every way unto all free-hearted liberality, which works through us thanksgiving to God.
  • Yes, you will be enriched in every way so that you can always be generous. And when we take your gifts to those who need them, they will thank God.
  • Because the ministration of this service is not only filling up the measure of what is lacking to the saints, but also abounding by many thanksgivings to God;
  • So two good things will result from this ministry of giving — the needs of the believers in Jerusalemf will be met, and they will joyfully express their thanks to God.
  • they glorifying God through the proof of this ministration, by reason of your subjection, by profession, to the glad tidings of the Christ, and your free-hearted liberality in communicating towards them and towards all;
  • As a result of your ministry, they will give glory to God. For your generosity to them and to all believers will prove that you are obedient to the Good News of Christ.
  • and in their supplication for you, full of ardent desire for you, on account of the exceeding grace of God [which is] upon you.
  • And they will pray for you with deep affection because of the overflowing grace God has given to you.
  • Thanks [be] to God for his unspeakable free gift.
  • Thank God for this giftg too wonderful for words!
