Samuel's Farewell Address

And Samuel said to all Israel, Behold, I have hearkened to your voice in all that ye said to me, and have made a king over you.

1

І сказав Самуїл до всього Ізраїля: „Ось я послухався вашого голосу в усьому, що ви говорили мені, — і поставив над вами царя́.

2

And now behold, the king walks before you; and I am old and grey-headed; and behold, my sons are with you; and I have walked before you from my youth up to this day.

А тепер той цар ось ходить перед вами. А я поста́рів та посивів, а сини мої — ось вони з вами. І я ходив перед вами від своєї мо́лодости аж до цього дня.

3

Here I am: testify against me before Jehovah, and before his anointed. Whose ox have I taken? or whose ass have I taken? or whom have I defrauded? whom have I injured? or of whose hand have I received any ransom and blinded mine eyes therewith? and I will restore it to you.

Ось я! Свідку́йте проти мене перед Господом та перед Його пома́занцем: чийо́го вола я взяв, чи осла чийо́го взяв я? А кого я гнобив, кому чинив наси́льство? І з чиєї руки взяв я пі́дкупа, і відвернув свої очі від нього? І все це я поверну́ вам“.

And they said, Thou hast not defrauded us, and thou hast not injured us, neither hast thou taken aught of any man's hand.

А вони сказали: „Не гноби́в ти нас, і не чинив нам наси́льства, і ні від ко́го нічо́го не брав“.

And he said to them, Jehovah is witness against you, and his anointed is witness this day, that ye have not found aught in my hand! And [the people] said, [He is] witness!

І він сказав: „Госпо́дь свідок на вас, і свідок Його пома́занець цього дня, що ви нічого не знайшли в моїй руці“. А народ сказав: „Свідок!“

And Samuel said to the people, [It is] Jehovah who appointed Moses and Aaron, and who brought your fathers up out of the land of Egypt.

І сказав Самуїл до народу: „Свідок Господь, що поставив Мойсея та Ааро́на, і що вивів наших батьків із єгипетського кра́ю.

7

And now stand still, that I may plead with you before Jehovah of all the righteous acts of Jehovah which he did to you and to your fathers.

А тепер станьте, і я буду суди́тися з вами перед Господнім лицем про всі доброді́йства Господні, які Він учинив із вами та з вашими батька́ми.

8

When Jacob had come into Egypt, and your fathers cried to Jehovah, then Jehovah sent Moses and Aaron, and they brought your fathers forth out of Egypt, and made them dwell in this place.

Як Яків прийшов був до Єгипту, і батьки́ ваші кли́кали до Господа, то Господь послав Мойсея та Аарона, і вони вивели ваших батьків із Єгипту, і осади́ли їх у цьому місці.

And they forgot Jehovah their God, and he sold them into the hand of Sisera, captain of the host of Hazor, and into the hand of the Philistines, and into the hand of the king of Moab, and they fought against them.

Та вони забу́ли Господа, Бога свого, і Він передав їх у руку Сісе́ри, начальника хацорського війська, і в руку филисти́млян та в руку моавського царя, — і вони воювали проти них.

10

And they cried to Jehovah and said, We have sinned, because we have forsaken Jehovah, and have served the Baals and the Ashtoreths; and now deliver us out of the hand of our enemies, and we will serve thee.

І кли́кали вони до Господа та говорили: „Згрішили ми, бо покинули Господа та й служили Ваа́лам та Аста́ртам. А тепер урятуй нас із руки наших ворогів, і ми бу́демо служити Тобі.

11

And Jehovah sent Jerubbaal and Bedan and Jephthah and Samuel, and delivered you out of the hand of your enemies round about, so that ye dwelt in safety.

І послав Господь Єруббаа́ла, і Беда́на, і Їфта́ха, і Самуїла, — і врятував вас із руки довко́лишніх ваших ворогів, і ви сиділи безпечно.

12

But when ye saw that Nahash the king of the children of Ammon came against you, ye said to me, Nay, but a king shall reign over us; when Jehovah your God was your king.

А коли ви побачили, що Нахаш, цар аммонських синів, прийшов на вас, то сказали мені: Ні, — нехай царює над нами цар! А Цар ваш — Госпо́дь, Бог ваш.

13

And now behold, the king whom ye have chosen, whom ye have asked for! and behold, Jehovah has set a king over you.

А тепер ось той цар, якого ви вибрали, якого жадали, і ось дав Господь над вами царя.

14

If ye fear Jehovah, and serve him, and hearken to his voice, and rebel not against the commandment of Jehovah, then both ye and the king also that reigns over you shall continue following Jehovah your God.

14

Якщо ви бу́дете боятися Господа, і бу́дете служити Йому, і бу́дете слухатися Його голосу, і не бу́дете непокі́рні до Господніх заповідей, то будете й ви, і цар, що царює над вами, ходити за Господом, Богом вашим.

15

But if ye will not hearken to the voice of Jehovah, and if ye rebel against the commandment of Jehovah, then will the hand of Jehovah be against you, as against your fathers.

А якщо ви не будете слухатися Господнього голосу, і будете непокі́рні до Господніх за́повідей, то Господня рука буде проти вас та проти ваших батьків!

16

Now therefore stand and see this great thing which Jehovah will do before your eyes.

16

I ось тепер станьте, і побачте ту велику річ, що Господь зробить на ваших оча́х.

17

Is it not wheat-harvest to-day? I will call unto Jehovah, and he will send thunder and rain; and ye shall perceive and see that your wickedness is great which ye have done in the sight of Jehovah in asking for yourselves a king.

Чи ж сьогодні не жнива́ на пшеницю? Я покличу до Господа, і Він пошле грім та дощ, а ви пізнаєте й побачите, що велике ваше зло, яке ви зробили в Господніх оча́х жада́нням для себе царя“.

18

And Samuel called to Jehovah; and Jehovah sent thunder and rain that day. And all the people greatly feared Jehovah and Samuel.

18

І кли́кнув Самуїл до Господа, а Господь послав того дня грім та дощ. І ввесь народ сильно злякався Господа та Самуїла!

19

And all the people said to Samuel, Pray to Jehovah thy God for thy servants, that we die not; for we have added to all our sins the wickedness to ask for ourselves a king.

І сказав увесь народ до Самуїла: „Помолися за своїх рабів до Господа, Бога твого, щоб нам не померти, бо понад усі наші гріхи́ додали́ ми ще й оце зло, що жадали для себе царя“.

20

And Samuel said to the people, Fear not: *ye* have done all this wickedness; yet turn not aside from following Jehovah, and serve Jehovah with all your heart;

20

І сказав Самуїл до народу: „Не бійтеся! Ви зробили все те зло, тільки не відступіть від Господа, і служіть Господе́ві всім серцем своїм!

21

and turn ye not aside; for [it would be] after vain things which cannot profit nor deliver; for they are vain.

21

І не відступайте, і не йдіть за марно́тами, які не допоможуть і які не врятують, бо марно́та вони.

22

For Jehovah will not cast away his people for his great name's sake; because it has pleased Jehovah to make you his people.

22

Бо Господь не поли́шить народу Свого ради Свого великого Йме́ння, бо зволив Господь зробити вас народом Своїм.

23

Moreover, as for me, far be it from me that I should sin against Jehovah in ceasing to pray for you; and I will teach you the good and right way.

23

Також я, — не дай мені, Боже, грішити проти Господа, щоб перестав я молитися за вас! І я буду наставля́ти вас на дорогу добру та про́сту.

24

Only, fear Jehovah, and serve him in truth, with all your heart; for see how great things he has done for you.

24

Тільки бійтеся Господа, і служіть Йому правдиво всім вашим серцем, бо ви бачили, які великі діла вчинив Він із вами!

25

But if ye do wickedly, ye shall perish, both ye and your king.

25

А якщо справді бу́дете чинити зло, — погинете й ви, і цар ваш!“
