And the king said to me, “Why is your face sad, seeing you are not sick? This is nothing but sadness of the heart.” Then I was very much afraid.
darum fragte er mich: »Warum siehst du so bedrückt aus? Du bist doch nicht etwa krank? Nein, irgendetwas belastet dich!« Ich erschrak heftig
I said to the king, “Let the king live forever! Why should not my face be sad, when the city, the place of my fathers’ graves, lies in ruins, and its gates have been destroyed by fire?”
und antwortete: »Lang lebe der König! Wie könnte ich fröhlich sein, wenn die Stadt, in der meine Vorfahren begraben sind, zerstört ist und ihre Tore in Schutt und Asche liegen?«
Then the king said to me, “What are you requesting?” So I prayed to the God of heaven.
Da fragte mich der König: »Worum bittest du?« Ich flehte zum Gott des Himmels,
And I said to the king, “If it pleases the king, and if your servant has found favor in your sight, that you send me to Judah, to the city of my fathers’ graves, that I may rebuild it.”
dann sagte ich: »Mein König! Wenn du es für richtig hältst und wenn du mir vertraust, dann sende mich nach Juda in die Stadt, in der meine Vorfahren begraben liegen. Ich möchte sie wieder aufbauen.«
And the king said to me (the queen sitting beside him), “How long will you be gone, and when will you return?” So it pleased the king to send me when I had given him a time.
Der König, neben dem die Königin saß, fragte mich: »Wie lange soll deine Reise dauern? Wann bist du wieder zurück?« Als ich ihm einen Zeitpunkt nannte, stimmte er zu.
And I said to the king, “If it pleases the king, let letters be given me to the governors of the province Beyond the River, that they may let me pass through until I come to Judah,
Dann bat ich ihn: »Mein König, wenn du möchtest, so gib mir bitte Briefe an die Provinzstatthalter westlich des Euphrat mit, damit sie mir die Durchreise nach Juda gestatten.
and a letter to Asaph, the keeper of the king’s forest, that he may give me timber to make beams for the gates of the fortress of the temple, and for the wall of the city, and for the house that I shall occupy.” And the king granted me what I asked, for the good hand of my God was upon me.
Außerdem bitte ich dich um ein Schreiben an Asaf, den Verwalter der königlichen Wälder, denn ich brauche Holz für die Torbalken der Burg am Tempel, für die Stadtmauer und für das Haus, in dem ich wohnen werde.« Der König gab mir die Briefe, denn Gott stand mir bei.

Dann befahl Artaxerxes, dass eine Leibgarde von Offizieren und Soldaten mich begleiten sollte. So kam ich zu den Provinzstatthaltern westlich des Euphrat und übergab ihnen die Briefe des Königs.
But when Sanballat the Horonite and Tobiah the Ammonite servant heard this, it displeased them greatly that someone had come to seek the welfare of the people of Israel.

So I went to Jerusalem and was there three days.

I went out by night by the Valley Gate to the Dragon Spring and to the Dung Gate, and I inspected the walls of Jerusalem that were broken down and its gates that had been destroyed by fire.
So verließ ich mitten in der Nacht die Stadt durch das Taltor, ritt in südlicher Richtung an der Drachenquelle vorbei und kam zum Misttor. Ich untersuchte die zerstörten Mauern und die niedergebrannten Tore.
Then I went on to the Fountain Gate and to the King’s Pool, but there was no room for the animal that was under me to pass.

And the officials did not know where I had gone or what I was doing, and I had not yet told the Jews, the priests, the nobles, the officials, and the rest who were to do the work.
Die führenden Männer von Jerusalem wussten nicht, wohin ich gegangen war und was ich getan hatte, denn ich hatte ihnen, den Priestern und allen, die beim Wiederaufbau mithelfen sollten, noch nichts von meinem Vorhaben erzählt.
Then I said to them, “You see the trouble we are in, how Jerusalem lies in ruins with its gates burned. Come, let us build the wall of Jerusalem, that we may no longer suffer derision.”
Jetzt aber sagte ich zu ihnen: »Ihr seht selbst unser Elend: Jerusalem ist ein einziger Trümmerhaufen, die Stadttore liegen in Schutt und Asche. Kommt, lasst uns die Mauer wieder aufbauen, damit wir nicht länger dem Gespött der Leute preisgegeben sind!«
And I told them of the hand of my God that had been upon me for good, and also of the words that the king had spoken to me. And they said, “Let us rise up and build.” So they strengthened their hands for the good work.
Ich erzählte ihnen, wie Gott mir geholfen und was der König von Persien mir versprochen hatte. Da erklärten sie: »Gut, wir wollen beginnen!«, und machten sich entschlossen an die Arbeit.
But when Sanballat the Horonite and Tobiah the Ammonite servant and Geshem the Arab heard of it, they jeered at us and despised us and said, “What is this thing that you are doing? Are you rebelling against the king?”
Als Sanballat, Tobija und der Araber Geschem davon hörten, lachten sie uns aus und spotteten: »Da habt ihr euch ja einiges vorgenommen! Wollt ihr euch etwa gegen den König auflehnen?«
Ich entgegnete ihnen: »Der Gott des Himmels wird unser Vorhaben gelingen lassen. Wir tun nur, was er von uns möchte; darum werden wir mit dem Bau beginnen. Ihr aber habt kein Anrecht auf Grund und Boden in Jerusalem, und auch aus der Vergangenheit könnt ihr keinerlei Anspruch erheben.«
