    The Lord’s Day of Vengeance

    Who is this who comes from Edom,
    in crimsoned garments from Bozrah,
    he who is splendid in his apparel,
    marching in the greatness of his strength?
    “It is I, speaking in righteousness,
    mighty to save.”

    Wer ist es, der aus Edom kommt, aus Bozra in rot gefärbten Gewändern? Er schreitet in prächtigen Kleidern, in seiner gewaltigen Kraft. Ich bin es, der Gerechtigkeit verkündet, ich bin stark, um zu retten.

    Why is your apparel red,
    and your garments like his who treads in the winepress?

    “I have trodden the winepress alone,
    and from the peoples no one was with me;
    I trod them in my anger
    and trampled them in my wrath;
    their lifeblooda spattered on my garments,
    and stained all my apparel.

    Ich allein trat die Kelter; von den Völkern war niemand bei mir. Da zertrat ich sie voll Zorn, zerstampfte sie in meiner Wut. Ihr Saft spritzte auf meine Kleider und ich befleckte alle meine Gewänder.

    For the day of vengeance was in my heart,
    and my year of redemptionb had come.

    Denn ein Tag der Vergeltung lag mir im Sinn und das Jahr meiner Erlösten war gekommen.

    I looked, but there was no one to help;
    I was appalled, but there was no one to uphold;
    so my own arm brought me salvation,
    and my wrath upheld me.

    I trampled down the peoples in my anger;
    I made them drunk in my wrath,
    and I poured out their lifeblood on the earth.”

    The Lord’s Mercy Remembered

    I will recount the steadfast love of the Lord,
    the praises of the Lord,
    according to all that the Lord has granted us,
    and the great goodness to the house of Israel
    that he has granted them according to his compassion,
    according to the abundance of his steadfast love.

    Die Taten der Huld des HERRN will ich preisen, die Ruhmestaten des HERRN, gemäß allem, was der HERR uns erwiesen hat, seine große Güte, die er dem Haus Israel nach seiner Barmherzigkeit und seiner großen Huld erwiesen hat.

    For he said, “Surely they are my people,
    children who will not deal falsely.”
    And he became their Savior.

    Er sagte: Gewiss, sie sind mein Volk, Kinder, die nicht treulos handeln. So wurde er ihnen zum Retter.

    In all their affliction he was afflicted,c
    and the angel of his presence saved them;
    in his love and in his pity he redeemed them;
    he lifted them up and carried them all the days of old.

    In all ihrer Bedrängnis war auch er bedrängt und der Engel seines Angesichts hat sie gerettet. In seiner Liebe und seinem Mitleid hat er selbst sie erlöst. Er hat sie emporgehoben und sie getragen in all den Tagen der Vorzeit.

    But they rebelled
    and grieved his Holy Spirit;
    therefore he turned to be their enemy,
    and himself fought against them.

    Sie aber lehnten sich auf und betrübten seinen heiligen Geist. Da wandelte er sich ihnen zum Feind; er selbst führte Krieg gegen sie.

    Then he remembered the days of old,
    of Moses and his people.d
    Where is he who brought them up out of the sea
    with the shepherds of his flock?
    Where is he who put in the midst of them
    his Holy Spirit,

    Da dachte man an die Tage der Vorzeit, an Mose, an sein Volk: Wo ist der, der sie heraufgeführt hat aus dem Meer, zusammen mit dem Hirten seiner Schafe? Wo ist der, der seinen heiligen Geist in sein Inneres gelegt hat,

    who caused his glorious arm
    to go at the right hand of Moses,
    who divided the waters before them
    to make for himself an everlasting name,

    der sie an der rechten Seite des Mose gehen ließ mit prachtvollem Arm, der die Wasser vor ihnen zerteilte, um sich einen ewigen Namen zu machen,

    who led them through the depths?
    Like a horse in the desert,
    they did not stumble.

    der sie durch die Fluten gehen ließ wie Pferde durch die Wüste, ohne dass sie strauchelten?

    Like livestock that go down into the valley,
    the Spirit of the Lord gave them rest.
    So you led your people,
    to make for yourself a glorious name.

    Wie das Vieh, das ins Tal hinabsteigt, so ließ sie der Geist des HERRN zur Ruhe kommen. So führtest du dein Volk, um dir einen prachtvollen Namen zu machen.

    Prayer for Mercy

    Look down from heaven and see,
    from your holy and beautifule habitation.
    Where are your zeal and your might?
    The stirring of your inner parts and your compassion
    are held back from me.

    Blick vom Himmel herab und sieh her von deiner heiligen, prachtvollen Wohnung! Wo ist dein leidenschaftlicher Eifer und deine Macht? Dein großes Mitgefühl und dein Erbarmen — sie bleiben mir versagt!

    For you are our Father,
    though Abraham does not know us,
    and Israel does not acknowledge us;
    you, O Lord, are our Father,
    our Redeemer from of old is your name.

    Du bist doch unser Vater! Abraham weiß nichts von uns, Israel kennt uns nicht. Du, HERR, bist unser Vater, Unser Erlöser von jeher ist dein Name.

    O Lord, why do you make us wander from your ways
    and harden our heart, so that we fear you not?
    Return for the sake of your servants,
    the tribes of your heritage.

    Warum lässt du uns, HERR, von deinen Wegen abirren und machst unser Herz hart, sodass wir dich nicht fürchten? Kehre zurück um deiner Knechte willen, um der Stämme willen, die dein Erbbesitz sind!

    Your holy people held possession for a little while;f
    our adversaries have trampled down your sanctuary.

    Für eine kurze Zeit haben unsere Feinde dein heiliges Volk in Besitz genommen; dein Heiligtum haben sie zertreten.

    We have become like those over whom you have never ruled,
    like those who are not called by your name.

    Wir sind geworden wie die, über die du nie geherrscht hast, über denen dein Name nie ausgerufen wurde. Hättest du doch den Himmel zerrissen und wärest herabgestiegen, sodass die Berge vor dir erzitterten,
