A Lament over Pharaoh and Egypt
In the twelfth year, in the twelfth month, on the first day of the month, the word of the Lord came to me:

Im 12. Jahr unserer Verbannung, am 1. Tag des 12. Monats, empfing ich eine Botschaft vom HERRN. Er sprach zu mir:
“Son of man, raise a lamentation over Pharaoh king of Egypt and say to him:
“You consider yourself a lion of the nations,
but you are like a dragon in the seas;
you burst forth in your rivers,
trouble the waters with your feet,
and foul their rivers.

»Du Mensch, stimm ein Klagelied an über den Pharao, den König von Ägypten. Richte ihm aus: Du denkst, du wärst so stark wie ein junger Löwe, mächtiger als alle Völker. Doch du gleichst eher einem Krokodil im großen Fluss! Du bläst ins Wasser, dass es sprudelt, und mit deinen Füßen wühlst du es auf, ja, jeden Fluss lässt du trüb werden.

I will throw my net over you
with a host of many peoples,
and they will haul you up in my dragnet.

Aber ich, Gott, der HERR, schicke viele Völker zu dir. Sie werden dich mit meinem Netz fangen und aus dem Wasser ziehen.

on the open field I will fling you,
and will cause all the birds of the heavens to settle on you,
and I will gorge the beasts of the whole earth with you.

Dann schleudere ich dich aufs freie Feld und lasse dich dort liegen; die Vögel sollen sich auf dir niederlassen und die wilden Tiere dich zerreißen.
Deine Überreste werden die Berge bedecken und die Täler ausfüllen,
I will drench the land even to the mountains
with your flowing blood,
and the ravines will be full of you.

Wenn ich dich vernichte, werde ich den Himmel verfinstern und die Sterne auslöschen. Schwarze Wolken verdunkeln dann die Sonne, und der Mond scheint nicht mehr.

will I make dark over you,

Ja, alle Lichter am Himmel lösche ich aus, deinetwegen bringe ich Finsternis über das ganze Land. Darauf gebe ich, Gott, der HERR, mein Wort.
“I will trouble the hearts of many peoples, when I bring your destruction among the nations, into the countries that you have not known.
Die Nachricht über deinen Untergang lasse ich in Ländern bekannt werden, von denen du noch nie etwas gehört hast. Viele Völker packt das Entsetzen.
I will make many peoples appalled at you, and the hair of their kings shall bristle with horror because of you, when I brandish my sword before them. They shall tremble every moment, every one for his own life, on the day of your downfall.
Mein Gericht über dich jagt ihnen Angst und Schrecken ein. Wenn ich vor aller Augen mein Schwert schwinge, stehen den Königen die Haare zu Berge. Dein Schicksal erschreckt sie so sehr, dass sie jeden Augenblick um ihr eigenes Leben fürchten.
“For thus says the Lord God: The sword of the king of Babylon shall come upon you.
Denn ich, Gott, der HERR, sage dir: Das Schwert des babylonischen Königs wird dich treffen.
Unter seinem Befehl lasse ich ein grausames Heer aus vielen Völkern über dich herfallen, sie werden die Bewohner deines Landes töten und deinen ganzen Reichtum zerstören. Dann hat dein Hochmut endlich ein Ende.

An den vielen Flüssen und Kanälen richte ich all dein Vieh zugrunde. So können in Zukunft weder Mensch noch Tier das Wasser verschmutzen.
Then I will make their waters clear,
and cause their rivers to run like oil,

Ich sorge dafür, dass deine Gewässer sauber sind und der Nil ruhig dahinfließt. Darauf kannst du dich verlassen!
When I make the land of Egypt desolate,
and when the land is desolate of all that fills it,
when I strike down all who dwell in it,
then they will know that I am the Lord.

Wenn ich dein Land leer fege und zur Einöde mache, wenn ich alle seine Bewohner strafe, dann werden sie erkennen, dass ich der HERR bin.
This is a lamentation that shall be chanted; the daughters of the nations shall chant it; over Egypt, and over all her multitude, shall they chant it, declares the Lord God.”
Dies ist ein Trauerlied, und in allen Völkern werden die Frauen es singen, um das Schicksal des reichen und mächtigen Ägyptens zu beklagen. Darauf gebe ich, Gott, der HERR, mein Wort.«
Im 12. Jahr unserer Verbannung, am 15. Tag des Monats, empfing ich wieder eine Botschaft vom HERRN. Er forderte mich auf:
“Son of man, wail over the multitude of Egypt, and send them down, her and the daughters of majestic nations, to the world below, to those who have gone down to the pit:
»Du Mensch, halte die Totenklage über Ägypten und seine ganze Pracht! Schick das Land hinunter ins Totenreich, wo schon andere mächtige Völker ihr Ende fanden!
‘Whom do you surpass in beauty?
Go down and be laid to rest with the uncircumcised.’

Sag zu Ägypten: Deine ganze Pracht — wo ist sie geblieben? Was hast du anderen Völkern jetzt noch voraus? Du musst hinunter ins Totenreich, mitten unter die unbeschnittenen Heiden!
Ja, die Ägypter werden vernichtet wie all die anderen, die im Krieg gefallen sind. Das Schwert ist schon gezückt! Bringt das ganze ägyptische Volk herbei!
The mighty chiefs shall speak of them, with their helpers, out of the midst of Sheol: ‘They have come down, they lie still, the uncircumcised, slain by the sword.’
Im Reich der Toten warten schon große Herrscher auf sie, um sie und ihre Helfer zu verspotten: ›Nun seid auch ihr hier angekommen, nun müsst ihr euch zu den unbeschnittenen Heiden gesellen — wie alle, die im Kampf getötet wurden!‹
“Assyria is there, and all her company, its graves all around it, all of them slain, fallen by the sword,
Auch der König von Assyrien ruht dort unten mit seinen ganzen Soldaten; sie alle sind im Krieg umgekommen.
whose graves are set in the uttermost parts of the pit; and her company is all around her grave, all of them slain, fallen by the sword, who spread terror in the land of the living.
Ihre Gräber liegen an der tiefsten Stelle der Totenwelt, rund um das Grab ihres Königs. Einst haben sie den Lebenden Angst und Schrecken eingejagt, doch nun hat das Schwert sie durchbohrt.
“Elam is there, and all her multitude around her grave; all of them slain, fallen by the sword, who went down uncircumcised into the world below, who spread their terror in the land of the living; and they bear their shame with those who go down to the pit.
Auch der König von Elam liegt im Reich der Toten, und sein stolzes Heer ruht rings um sein Grab. Im Krieg sind sie getötet worden und dann in die Totenwelt gekommen. Da liegen sie nun, diese unbeschnittenen Heiden! Früher haben sie andere Völker eingeschüchtert, doch nun ruhen sie dort unten, ihr König in der Mitte und sie rund um sein Grab. Nun tragen auch sie die Schande, im Krieg gefallen zu sein.
“Meshech-Tubal is there, and all her multitude, her graves all around it, all of them uncircumcised, slain by the sword; for they spread their terror in the land of the living.
Auch der Herrscher von Meschech und Tubal wartet dort unten, zusammen mit seinen Kriegern. Sie sind mit dem Schwert erstochen worden, und nun liegen diese unbeschnittenen Heiden im Reich der Toten. Einst haben sie die Lebenden in Angst und Schrecken versetzt, doch jetzt ruhen sie rund um das Grab ihres Königs.
And they do not lie with the mighty, the fallen from among the uncircumcised, who went down to Sheol with their weapons of war, whose swords were laid under their heads, and whose iniquities are upon their bones; for the terror of the mighty men was in the land of the living.
Sie wurden nicht ehrenvoll bestattet wie die Helden aus vergangenen Zeiten, die mit all ihren Waffen in die Totenwelt kamen, die mit ihrem Schwert unter dem Kopf und von ihrem Schild bedeckt begraben wurden. Einst waren diese Helden von allen gefürchtet.
But as for you, you shall be broken and lie among the uncircumcised, with those who are slain by the sword.
Auch du, Ägypten, wirst nun zerschmettert und musst hinunter zu den Heiden, die im Krieg gefallen sind.
“Edom is there, her kings and all her princes, who for all their might are laid with those who are killed by the sword; they lie with the uncircumcised, with those who go down to the pit.
Der König und die Fürsten von Edom erwarten dich. Zu Lebzeiten waren sie mutige und kampferprobte Männer. Doch nun ruhen sie in der Welt der Toten bei den unbeschnittenen Heiden, die im Krieg gefallen sind.
“The princes of the north are there, all of them, and all the Sidonians, who have gone down in shame with the slain, for all the terror that they caused by their might; they lie uncircumcised with those who are slain by the sword, and bear their shame with those who go down to the pit.
Auch auf die versammelten Könige aus dem Norden und auf die Phönizier wirst du dort treffen. Einst haben sie anderen Völkern große Angst eingejagt, weil sie unerschrockene Kämpfer waren. Nun ruhen diese unbeschnittenen Heiden unter den Gefallenen und tragen die Schande, besiegt und getötet worden zu sein.
“When Pharaoh sees them, he will be comforted for all his multitude, Pharaoh and all his army, slain by the sword, declares the Lord God.
All diesen Königen und Völkern wird der Pharao in der Totenwelt begegnen, und das wird ihn trösten über den Untergang seines eigenen Volkes. Denn bald fällt er im Krieg und seine Soldaten mit ihm. Darauf gebe ich, Gott, der HERR, mein Wort.
For I spread terror in the land of the living; and he shall be laid to rest among the uncircumcised, with those who are slain by the sword, Pharaoh and all his multitude, declares the Lord God.”
Ich ließ es zu, dass er anderen Völkern Angst und Schrecken einjagte, doch jetzt muss er ins Totenreich zu den unbeschnittenen Heiden, die im Krieg ihr Leben ließen. Das ist das Ende des Pharaos und seiner ganzen Pracht. Das sage ich, Gott, der HERR.«
