And all the people of Israel grumbled against Moses and Aaron. The whole congregation said to them, “Would that we had died in the land of Egypt! Or would that we had died in this wilderness!
Alle Israeliten murrten über Mose und Aaron und die ganze Gemeinde sagte zu ihnen: Wären wir doch in Ägypten oder in dieser Wüste gestorben!
Why is the Lord bringing us into this land, to fall by the sword? Our wives and our little ones will become a prey. Would it not be better for us to go back to Egypt?”
Warum nur will uns der HERR in jenes Land bringen? Etwa damit wir durch das Schwert umkommen und unsere Frauen und Kinder eine Beute der Feinde werden? Wäre es für uns nicht besser, nach Ägypten zurückzukehren?
And they said to one another, “Let us choose a leader and go back to Egypt.”
Und sie sagten zueinander: Wir wollen einen neuen Anführer wählen und nach Ägypten zurückkehren.
Then Moses and Aaron fell on their faces before all the assembly of the congregation of the people of Israel.
Da warfen sich Mose und Aaron vor der ganzen Versammlung der Gemeinde der Israeliten auf ihr Gesicht nieder.
And Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, who were among those who had spied out the land, tore their clothes
Josua, der Sohn Nuns, und Kaleb, der Sohn Jefunnes, zwei von denen, die das Land erkundet hatten, zerrissen ihre Kleider
and said to all the congregation of the people of Israel, “The land, which we passed through to spy it out, is an exceedingly good land.
und sagten zu der ganzen Gemeinde der Israeliten: Das Land, das wir durchwandert und erkundet haben, dieses Land ist sehr, sehr gut.
If the Lord delights in us, he will bring us into this land and give it to us, a land that flows with milk and honey.
Wenn der HERR uns wohlgesinnt ist und uns in dieses Land bringt, dann schenkt er uns ein Land, in dem Milch und Honig fließen.
Only do not rebel against the Lord. And do not fear the people of the land, for they are bread for us. Their protection is removed from them, and the Lord is with us; do not fear them.”
Lehnt euch nur nicht gegen den HERRN auf! Habt keine Angst vor dem Volk des Landes, denn sie werden wie Brot sein, das wir verschlingen! Ihr schützender Schatten ist von ihnen gewichen, denn der HERR ist mit uns. Habt keine Angst vor ihnen!
Then all the congregation said to stone them with stones. But the glory of the Lord appeared at the tent of meeting to all the people of Israel.
Doch die ganze Gemeinde drohte Mose und Aaron zu steinigen. Da erschien die Herrlichkeit des HERRN am Offenbarungszelt allen Israeliten
And the Lord said to Moses, “How long will this people despise me? And how long will they not believe in me, in spite of all the signs that I have done among them?
und der HERR sprach zu Mose: Wie lange verachtet mich dieses Volk noch, wie lange noch wollen sie nicht an mich glauben trotz all der Zeichen, die ich mitten unter ihnen vollbracht habe?
I will strike them with the pestilence and disinherit them, and I will make of you a nation greater and mightier than they.”
Ich will sie mit der Pest schlagen und ausrotten; dich aber will ich zu einer Nation machen, die größer und mächtiger ist als diese.
Moses Intercedes for the People
But Moses said to the Lord, “Then the Egyptians will hear of it, for you brought up this people in your might from among them,

Da antwortete Mose dem HERRN: Die Ägypter werden hören, dass du dieses Volk mit deiner Kraft aus ihrer Mitte heraufgeführt hast,
and they will tell the inhabitants of this land. They have heard that you, O Lord, are in the midst of this people. For you, O Lord, are seen face to face, and your cloud stands over them and you go before them, in a pillar of cloud by day and in a pillar of fire by night.
und sie werden zu den Einwohnern dieses Landes sagen, sie hätten gehört, dass du, HERR, mitten in diesem Volk bist, dass du, HERR, dich ihnen Auge in Auge zu sehen gabst, dass deine Wolke über ihnen stand, dass du ihnen bei Tag in einer Wolkensäule und bei Nacht in einer Feuersäule vorangegangen bist,
Now if you kill this people as one man, then the nations who have heard your fame will say,
dann aber dieses Volk wie einen einzigen Mann getötet hast. Da werden die Nationen, die die Gerüchte über dich gehört haben, sagen:
‘It is because the Lord was not able to bring this people into the land that he swore to give to them that he has killed them in the wilderness.’
Weil der HERR nicht imstande war, dieses Volk in das Land zu bringen, das er ihnen mit einem Eid verheißen hatte, hat er sie in der Wüste abgeschlachtet.
And now, please let the power of the Lord be great as you have promised, saying,
Gerade jetzt sollte sich die Kraft meines Herrn in ihrer ganzen Größe zeigen, wie du gesagt hast:
‘The Lord is slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, forgiving iniquity and transgression, but he will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, to the third and the fourth generation.’
Der HERR ist langmütig und reich an Huld, er nimmt Schuld und Frevel hinweg, aber er spricht nicht einfach frei, sondern sucht die Schuld der Väter bei den Kindern heim, bis zur dritten und vierten Generation:
Please pardon the iniquity of this people, according to the greatness of your steadfast love, just as you have forgiven this people, from Egypt until now.”
Vergib diesem Volk nach deiner großen Gnade die Schuld, wie du sie diesem Volk schon früher weggenommen hast von Ägypten bis hierher!
God Promises Judgment
Then the Lord said, “I have pardoned, according to your word.
Then the Lord said, “I have pardoned, according to your word.
Da sprach der HERR: Ich verzeihe ihm, da du mich bittest.
But truly, as I live, and as all the earth shall be filled with the glory of the Lord,
Doch so wahr ich lebe und die Herrlichkeit des HERRN das ganze Land erfüllt:
none of the men who have seen my glory and my signs that I did in Egypt and in the wilderness, and yet have put me to the test these ten times and have not obeyed my voice,
Alle Männer, die meine Herrlichkeit und meine Zeichen gesehen haben, die ich in Ägypten und in der Wüste vollbracht habe, und die mich jetzt schon zum zehnten Mal auf die Probe gestellt und doch nicht auf mich gehört haben,
shall see the land that I swore to give to their fathers. And none of those who despised me shall see it.
sie alle werden das Land niemals zu sehen bekommen, das ich ihren Vätern mit einem Eid verheißen habe. Keiner von denen, die mich verachtet haben, wird es zu sehen bekommen.
But my servant Caleb, because he has a different spirit and has followed me fully, I will bring into the land into which he went, and his descendants shall possess it.
Meinen Knecht Kaleb aber, der anders denkt und treu zu mir hält, ihn werde ich in das Land bringen. Er darf es betreten und seine Nachkommen sollen es erben.
Now, since the Amalekites and the Canaanites dwell in the valleys, turn tomorrow and set out for the wilderness by the way to the Red Sea.”
Die Amalekiter und die Kanaaniter sitzen in der Ebene. Brecht also morgen auf und schlagt eine andere Richtung ein, in die Wüste, zum Roten Meer hin!
“How long shall this wicked congregation grumble against me? I have heard the grumblings of the people of Israel, which they grumble against me.
Wie lange soll das mit dieser bösen Gemeinde so weitergehen, die über mich murrt? Ich habe das Murren der Israeliten gehört. Gegen mich murren sie.
Say to them, ‘As I live, declares the Lord, what you have said in my hearing I will do to you:
Sag ihnen: So wahr ich lebe — Spruch des HERRN — , wovon ihr mir die Ohren vollgeredet habt, das werde ich euch tun:
your dead bodies shall fall in this wilderness, and of all your number, listed in the census from twenty years old and upward, who have grumbled against me,
Hier in der Wüste werden eure Leichen liegen bleiben, alle ohne Ausnahme; jeder von euch, der gemustert worden ist, wird sterben, alle Männer von zwanzig Jahren an aufwärts, die über mich gemurrt haben.
not one shall come into the land where I swore that I would make you dwell, except Caleb the son of Jephunneh and Joshua the son of Nun.
Keiner von euch wird in das Land kommen, obwohl ich meine Hand erhoben und geschworen hatte, euch darin wohnen zu lassen, außer Kaleb, der Sohn Jefunnes, und Josua, der Sohn Nuns.
But your little ones, who you said would become a prey, I will bring in, and they shall know the land that you have rejected.
Eure Kinder aber, von denen ihr gesagt habt, sie würden eine Beute der Feinde werden, sie werde ich in das Land bringen. Sie werden das Land kennenlernen, das ihr verworfen habt.
But as for you, your dead bodies shall fall in this wilderness.
Eure Leichen aber werden in dieser Wüste liegen bleiben.
And your children shall be shepherds in the wilderness forty years and shall suffer for your faithlessness, until the last of your dead bodies lies in the wilderness.
Eure Söhne müssen ihre Herde vierzig Jahre lang in der Wüste hüten und eure Hurerei tragen, bis eure Leichen in der Wüste liegen.
According to the number of the days in which you spied out the land, forty days, a year for each day, you shall bear your iniquity forty years, and you shall know my displeasure.’
So viele Tage, wie ihr gebraucht habt, um das Land zu erkunden, nämlich vierzig Tage, so viele Jahre lang — für jeden Tag ein Jahr — müsst ihr die Folgen eurer Schuld tragen, also vierzig Jahre lang, dann werdet ihr erkennen, was es heißt, wenn ich mich von euch abwende.
I, the Lord, have spoken. Surely this will I do to all this wicked congregation who are gathered together against me: in this wilderness they shall come to a full end, and there they shall die.”
Ich, der HERR, habe gesprochen. Unwiderruflich werde ich es mit dieser ganzen bösen Gemeinde so machen, die sich gegen mich zusammengerottet hat: In dieser Wüste finden sie ihr Ende, hier müssen sie sterben.
And the men whom Moses sent to spy out the land, who returned and made all the congregation grumble against him by bringing up a bad report about the land —
Die Männer, die Mose ausgeschickt hatte, um das Land zu erkunden, und die nach ihrer Rückkehr die ganze Gemeinde zum Murren verführt hatten, weil sie ein Gerücht über das Land ausgestreut hatten,
the men who brought up a bad report of the land — died by plague before the Lord.

Of those men who went to spy out the land, only Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh remained alive.
Nur Josua, der Sohn Nuns, und Kaleb, der Sohn Jefunnes, blieben am Leben, als Einzige von allen, die ausgezogen waren, um das Land zu erkunden.
Israel Defeated in Battle
When Moses told these words to all the people of Israel, the people mourned greatly.

And they rose early in the morning and went up to the heights of the hill country, saying, “Here we are. We will go up to the place that the Lord has promised, for we have sinned.”
Sie standen am nächsten Morgen auf, um auf die Höhe des Gebirges zu steigen; sie sagten: Siehe, wir ziehen jetzt zu dem Ort hinauf, den der HERR genannt hat. Ja, wir haben gesündigt.
But Moses said, “Why now are you transgressing the command of the Lord, when that will not succeed?

Do not go up, for the Lord is not among you, lest you be struck down before your enemies.
Zieht nicht hinauf, denn der HERR ist nicht bei euch; ihr werdet von euren Feinden nur geschlagen werden.
For there the Amalekites and the Canaanites are facing you, and you shall fall by the sword. Because you have turned back from following the Lord, the Lord will not be with you.”
Denn ihr habt dort die Amalekiter und die Kanaaniter gegen euch und ihr werdet durch das Schwert umkommen. Weil ihr euch vom HERRN abgewendet habt, wird der HERR nicht mit euch sein.
But they presumed to go up to the heights of the hill country, although neither the ark of the covenant of the Lord nor Moses departed out of the camp.
Doch in ihrem Starrsinn stiegen sie auf die Höhe des Gebirges hinauf. Aber die Bundeslade des HERRN und Mose wichen nicht von ihrer Stelle mitten im Lager.
