Balaam’s First Oracle
And Balaam said to Balak, “Build for me here seven altars, and prepare for me here seven bulls and seven rams.”
And Balaam said to Balak, “Build for me here seven altars, and prepare for me here seven bulls and seven rams.”
Bileam forderte Balak auf: »Bau mir sieben Altäre und bring mir sieben Stiere und sieben Schafböcke!«
Balak did as Balaam had said. And Balak and Balaam offered on each altar a bull and a ram.
Balak tat, was Bileam verlangte. Gemeinsam brachten sie auf jedem Altar einen Stier und einen Schafbock als Brandopfer dar.
And Balaam said to Balak, “Stand beside your burnt offering, and I will go. Perhaps the Lord will come to meet me, and whatever he shows me I will tell you.” And he went to a bare height,
Dann sagte Bileam zu Balak: »Bleib du hier bei deinen Opfern! Ich will gehen und sehen, ob der HERR zu mir kommt. Wenn er mir etwas zeigt, werde ich es dir berichten.« Bileam stieg auf eine kahle Anhöhe,
and God met Balaam. And Balaam said to him, “I have arranged the seven altars and I have offered on each altar a bull and a ram.”
und dort begegnete ihm Gott. Bileam sagte: »Ich habe sieben Altäre für dich aufgebaut und auf jedem einen Stier und einen Schafbock geopfert.«
And the Lord put a word in Balaam’s mouth and said, “Return to Balak, and thus you shall speak.”
Da ließ Gott ihn wissen, was er reden sollte, und forderte ihn auf: »Nun geh wieder zu Balak und richte ihm meine Botschaft aus.«
And he returned to him, and behold, he and all the princes of Moab were standing beside his burnt offering.
Bileam kehrte zu Balak zurück, der neben den Brandopfern wartete. Bei ihm standen die führenden Männer der Moabiter.
And Balaam took up his discourse and said,
“From Aram Balak has brought me,
the king of Moab from the eastern mountains:
‘Come, curse Jacob for me,
and come, denounce Israel!’

Bileam fing an zu reden: »Aus dem Land der Aramäer hat Balak mich geholt, aus den Bergen im Osten hat mich der König Moabs gerufen: ›Komm und verfluche für mich das Volk Israel, bring Unheil über die Nachkommen von Jakob.‹
How can I curse whom God has not cursed?
How can I denounce whom the Lord has not denounced?

Aber wie kann ich jemanden verfluchen, den Gott nicht verflucht? Wie kann ich jemandem Unheil bringen, dem Gott, der HERR, nichts antun will?
For from the top of the crags I see him,
from the hills I behold him;
behold, a people dwelling alone,
and not counting itself among the nations!

Von diesem Berg aus kann ich Israel sehen, ich habe es genau im Blick: Dieses Volk wohnt ganz allein und unterscheidet sich von allen anderen Völkern.
Wer kann die unendliche Schar der Nachkommen von Jakob zählen? Nicht einmal ein Viertel von Israel lässt sich erfassen! Wenn ich nur eines Tages so in Frieden sterben könnte wie diese aufrichtigen Menschen, wenn mein Ende nur dem ihren gleichen würde!«
And Balak said to Balaam, “What have you done to me? I took you to curse my enemies, and behold, you have done nothing but bless them.”
Da rief Balak: »Was tust du mir an? Ich habe dich geholt, damit du meine Feinde verfluchst. Und nun segnest du sie!«
And he answered and said, “Must I not take care to speak what the Lord puts in my mouth?”
Bileam erwiderte: »Muss ich nicht genau das sagen, was der HERR mir aufträgt?«
Balaam’s Second Oracle
And Balak said to him, “Please come with me to another place, from which you may see them. You shall see only a fraction of them and shall not see them all. Then curse them for me from there.”

Balak forderte ihn auf: »Komm mit, wir gehen an einen anderen Ort. Von dort kannst du zwar auch nur einen Teil des israelitischen Lagers sehen, aber trotzdem sollst du noch einmal versuchen, das Volk zu verfluchen.«
And he took him to the field of Zophim, to the top of Pisgah, and built seven altars and offered a bull and a ram on each altar.
Er brachte Bileam auf den Gipfel des Berges Pisga, wo die Wachposten standen. Wieder baute er sieben Altäre und opferte auf jedem einen Stier und einen Schafbock.
Balaam said to Balak, “Stand here beside your burnt offering, while I meet the Lord over there.”
Bileam sagte zu Balak: »Warte hier bei den Altären, ich will ein Stück weggehen, um dem Herrn zu begegnen.«
And the Lord met Balaam and put a word in his mouth and said, “Return to Balak, and thus shall you speak.”
Wieder kam der HERR zu Bileam und ließ ihn wissen, was er sagen sollte. Dann schickte er ihn zu Balak zurück,
And he came to him, and behold, he was standing beside his burnt offering, and the princes of Moab with him. And Balak said to him, “What has the Lord spoken?”
der mit den führenden Männern Moabs bei den Altären wartete. Balak fragte Bileam: »Was hat der HERR dir gesagt?«
And Balaam took up his discourse and said,
“Rise, Balak, and hear;
give ear to me, O son of Zippor:
“Rise, Balak, and hear;
give ear to me, O son of Zippor:
Bileam antwortete: »Pass auf, Balak, du Sohn von Zippor, und hör zu; achte genau auf meine Worte!
God is not man, that he should lie,
or a son of man, that he should change his mind.
Has he said, and will he not do it?
Or has he spoken, and will he not fulfill it?
or a son of man, that he should change his mind.

Gott ist kein Mensch, der lügt. Er ist nicht wie einer von uns, der seine Versprechen bald wieder bereut. Was er sagt, das tut er, und was er ankündigt, das führt er aus.
Behold, I received a command to bless:
he has blessed, and I cannot revoke it.

Begreif doch: Ich habe den Auftrag zu segnen. Und wenn Gott jemandem seinen Segen geschenkt hat, kann ich es nicht wieder rückgängig machen.
He has not beheld misfortune in Jacob,
nor has he seen trouble in Israel.

Er entdeckt keine Schuld bei den Nachkommen von Jakob, er findet nichts Schlechtes an den Israeliten. Der HERR, ihr Gott, ist bei ihnen, sie feiern ihn als ihren König.
God brings them out of Egypt
and is for them like the horns of the wild ox.

Er hat sie aus Ägypten hierhergeführt, er macht sie stark wie einen wilden Stier.
For there is no enchantment against Jacob,
no divination against Israel;
now it shall be said of Jacob and Israel,

Gegen die Nachkommen von Jakob hilft keine Verwünschung, kein Zauberspruch kann Israel etwas anhaben. Darum sagt man staunend über Israel: ›Seht, was Gott für sie getan hat!‹

and as a lion it lifts itself;
it does not lie down until it has devoured the prey
and drunk the blood of the slain.”

Israel steht auf wie ein Löwe, es erhebt sich wie eine Löwin. Dieses Volk ruht nicht, bevor es seine Beute verzehrt und das Blut seiner Opfer getrunken hat.«
And Balak said to Balaam, “Do not curse them at all, and do not bless them at all.”
Da rief Balak: »Jetzt ist es genug! Wenn du sie schon nicht verfluchst, dann hör wenigstens auf, sie zu segnen!«
But Balaam answered Balak, “Did I not tell you, ‘All that the Lord says, that I must do’?”
Doch Bileam erwiderte: »Habe ich dir nicht erklärt, dass ich weitergeben werde, was der HERR mir sagt?«
And Balak said to Balaam, “Come now, I will take you to another place. Perhaps it will please God that you may curse them for me from there.”
Balak antwortete: »Komm, ich bringe dich an einen anderen Ort. Vielleicht gefällt er Gott besser, und er lässt dich den Fluch endlich aussprechen.«
Er nahm Bileam mit auf die Spitze des Berges Peor, von wo aus man die Jordan-Ebene überblicken konnte.
And Balaam said to Balak, “Build for me here seven altars and prepare for me here seven bulls and seven rams.”
Auch hier forderte Bileam den König auf, sieben Altäre zu bauen und ebenso viele Stiere und Schafböcke bereitzustellen.
