The Death of John the Baptist

and he said to his servants, “This is John the Baptist. He has been raised from the dead; that is why these miraculous powers are at work in him.”
Er sagte zu seinem Gefolge: Das ist Johannes der Täufer. Er ist von den Toten auferstanden; deshalb wirken solche Kräfte in ihm.
Herodes hatte nämlich Johannes festnehmen und in Ketten ins Gefängnis werfen lassen wegen der Herodias, der Frau seines Bruders Philippus.
because John had been saying to him, “It is not lawful for you to have her.”
Denn Johannes hatte zu ihm gesagt: Es ist dir nicht erlaubt, sie zur Frau zu haben.
And though he wanted to put him to death, he feared the people, because they held him to be a prophet.

But when Herod’s birthday came, the daughter of Herodias danced before the company and pleased Herod,

so that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she might ask.

Prompted by her mother, she said, “Give me the head of John the Baptist here on a platter.”
Sie aber, angestiftet von ihrer Mutter, sagte: Gib mir hier auf einer Schale den Kopf Johannes’ des Täufers!
And the king was sorry, but because of his oaths and his guests he commanded it to be given.

He sent and had John beheaded in the prison,

and his head was brought on a platter and given to the girl, and she brought it to her mother.

And his disciples came and took the body and buried it, and they went and told Jesus.

Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand
Now when Jesus heard this, he withdrew from there in a boat to a desolate place by himself. But when the crowds heard it, they followed him on foot from the towns.

Als Jesus das hörte, zog er sich allein von dort mit dem Boot in eine einsame Gegend zurück. Aber die Volksscharen hörten davon und folgten ihm zu Fuß aus den Städten nach.
When he went ashore he saw a great crowd, and he had compassion on them and healed their sick.

Now when it was evening, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a desolate place, and the day is now over; send the crowds away to go into the villages and buy food for themselves.”
Als es Abend wurde, kamen die Jünger zu ihm und sagten: Der Ort ist abgelegen und es ist schon spät geworden. Schick die Leute weg, damit sie in die Dörfer gehen und sich etwas zu essen kaufen!
But Jesus said, “They need not go away; you give them something to eat.”
Jesus aber antwortete: Sie brauchen nicht wegzugehen. Gebt ihr ihnen zu essen!
They said to him, “We have only five loaves here and two fish.”
Sie sagten zu ihm: Wir haben nur fünf Brote und zwei Fische hier.
Then he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass, and taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven and said a blessing. Then he broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds.
Dann ordnete er an, die Leute sollten sich ins Gras setzen. Und er nahm die fünf Brote und die zwei Fische, blickte zum Himmel auf, sprach den Lobpreis, brach die Brote und gab sie den Jüngern; die Jünger aber gaben sie den Leuten
And they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up twelve baskets full of the broken pieces left over.
und alle aßen und wurden satt. Und sie sammelten die übrig gebliebenen Brotstücke ein, zwölf Körbe voll.
And those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children.
Es waren etwa fünftausend Männer, die gegessen hatten, dazu noch Frauen und Kinder.
Jesus Walks on the Water
Immediately he made the disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds.

Gleich darauf drängte er die Jünger, ins Boot zu steigen und an das andere Ufer vorauszufahren. Inzwischen wollte er die Leute nach Hause schicken.
And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone,
Nachdem er sie weggeschickt hatte, stieg er auf einen Berg, um für sich allein zu beten. Als es Abend wurde, war er allein dort.
Das Boot aber war schon viele Stadien vom Land entfernt und wurde von den Wellen hin und her geworfen; denn sie hatten Gegenwind.
In der vierten Nachtwache kam er zu ihnen; er ging auf dem See.
But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, and said, “It is a ghost!” and they cried out in fear.
Als ihn die Jünger über den See kommen sahen, erschraken sie, weil sie meinten, es sei ein Gespenst, und sie schrien vor Angst.
But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid.”
Doch sogleich sprach Jesus zu ihnen und sagte: Habt Vertrauen, ich bin es; fürchtet euch nicht!
And Peter answered him, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.”
Petrus erwiderte ihm und sagte: Herr, wenn du es bist, so befiehl, dass ich auf dem Wasser zu dir komme!
He said, “Come.” So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus.
Jesus sagte: Komm! Da stieg Petrus aus dem Boot und kam über das Wasser zu Jesus.
Als er aber den heftigen Wind bemerkte, bekam er Angst. Und als er begann unterzugehen, schrie er: Herr, rette mich!
Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him, saying to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?”
Jesus streckte sofort die Hand aus, ergriff ihn und sagte zu ihm: Du Kleingläubiger, warum hast du gezweifelt?
And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased.
Und als sie ins Boot gestiegen waren, legte sich der Wind.
And those in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”
Die Jünger im Boot aber fielen vor Jesus nieder und sagten: Wahrhaftig, Gottes Sohn bist du.
