The Parable of the Wedding Feast

“The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who gave a wedding feast for his son,
Mit dem Himmelreich ist es wie mit einem König, der seinem Sohn die Hochzeit ausrichtete.
Er schickte seine Diener, um die eingeladenen Gäste zur Hochzeit rufen zu lassen. Sie aber wollten nicht kommen.
Again he sent other servants, saying, ‘Tell those who are invited, “See, I have prepared my dinner, my oxen and my fat calves have been slaughtered, and everything is ready. Come to the wedding feast.”’
Da schickte er noch einmal Diener und trug ihnen auf: Sagt den Eingeladenen: Siehe, mein Mahl ist fertig, meine Ochsen und das Mastvieh sind geschlachtet, alles ist bereit. Kommt zur Hochzeit!
But they paid no attention and went off, one to his farm, another to his business,
Sie aber kümmerten sich nicht darum, sondern der eine ging auf seinen Acker, der andere in seinen Laden,
while the rest seized his servants, treated them shamefully, and killed them.

The king was angry, and he sent his troops and destroyed those murderers and burned their city.
Da wurde der König zornig; er schickte sein Heer, ließ die Mörder töten und ihre Stadt in Schutt und Asche legen.
Then he said to his servants, ‘The wedding feast is ready, but those invited were not worthy.
Dann sagte er zu seinen Dienern: Das Hochzeitsmahl ist vorbereitet, aber die Gäste waren nicht würdig.
Go therefore to the main roads and invite to the wedding feast as many as you find.’
Geht also an die Kreuzungen der Straßen und ladet alle, die ihr trefft, zur Hochzeit ein!
And those servants went out into the roads and gathered all whom they found, both bad and good. So the wedding hall was filled with guests.
Die Diener gingen auf die Straßen hinaus und holten alle zusammen, die sie trafen, Böse und Gute, und der Festsaal füllte sich mit Gästen.
“But when the king came in to look at the guests, he saw there a man who had no wedding garment.

And he said to him, ‘Friend, how did you get in here without a wedding garment?’ And he was speechless.

Then the king said to the attendants, ‘Bind him hand and foot and cast him into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’
Da befahl der König seinen Dienern: Bindet ihm Hände und Füße und werft ihn hinaus in die äußerste Finsternis! Dort wird Heulen und Zähneknirschen sein.

Damals kamen die Pharisäer zusammen und beschlossen, Jesus mit einer Frage eine Falle zu stellen.
Sie veranlassten ihre Jünger, zusammen mit den Anhängern des Herodes zu ihm zu gehen und zu sagen: Meister, wir wissen, dass du die Wahrheit sagst und wahrhaftig den Weg Gottes lehrst und auf niemanden Rücksicht nimmst, denn du siehst nicht auf die Person.
Tell us, then, what you think. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?”
Sag uns also: Was meinst du? Ist es erlaubt, dem Kaiser Steuer zu zahlen, oder nicht?
But Jesus, aware of their malice, said, “Why put me to the test, you hypocrites?
Jesus aber erkannte ihre böse Absicht und sagte: Ihr Heuchler, warum versucht ihr mich?
Zeigt mir die Münze, mit der ihr eure Steuern bezahlt! Da hielten sie ihm einen Denar hin.
And Jesus said to them, “Whose likeness and inscription is this?”
Er fragte sie: Wessen Bild und Aufschrift ist das?
They said, “Caesar’s.” Then he said to them, “Therefore render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.”
Sie antworteten ihm: Des Kaisers. Darauf sagte er zu ihnen: So gebt dem Kaiser, was dem Kaiser gehört, und Gott, was Gott gehört!
When they heard it, they marveled. And they left him and went away.
Als sie das hörten, staunten sie, ließen ihn stehen und gingen weg.

Am selben Tag kamen zu Jesus einige von den Sadduzäern, die behaupten, es gebe keine Auferstehung. Sie fragten ihn:
saying, “Teacher, Moses said, ‘If a man dies having no children, his brother must marry the widow and raise up offspring for his brother.’
Meister, Mose hat gesagt: Wenn ein Mann stirbt, ohne Kinder zu haben, dann soll sein Bruder dessen Frau heiraten und seinem Bruder Nachkommen verschaffen.
Now there were seven brothers among us. The first married and died, and having no offspring left his wife to his brother.
Bei uns lebten einmal sieben Brüder. Der erste heiratete und starb, und weil er keine Nachkommen hatte, hinterließ er seine Frau seinem Bruder,
So too the second and third, down to the seventh.
ebenso der zweite und der dritte und so weiter bis zum siebten.
In the resurrection, therefore, of the seven, whose wife will she be? For they all had her.”
Wessen Frau wird sie nun bei der Auferstehung sein? Alle sieben haben sie doch zur Frau gehabt.
But Jesus answered them, “You are wrong, because you know neither the Scriptures nor the power of God.
Jesus antwortete und sprach zu ihnen: Ihr irrt euch; ihr kennt weder die Schrift noch die Macht Gottes.
For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven.
Denn nach der Auferstehung heiratet man nicht, noch wird man geheiratet, sondern die Menschen sind wie Engel im Himmel.
And as for the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what was said to you by God:
Habt ihr im Übrigen nicht gelesen, was Gott euch über die Auferstehung der Toten mit den Worten gesagt hat:
‘I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? He is not God of the dead, but of the living.”
Ich bin der Gott Abrahams, der Gott Isaaks und der Gott Jakobs? Er ist nicht der Gott von Toten, sondern von Lebenden.
And when the crowd heard it, they were astonished at his teaching.

And one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question to test him.
Einer von ihnen, ein Gesetzeslehrer, wollte ihn versuchen und fragte ihn:
“Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?”
Meister, welches Gebot im Gesetz ist das wichtigste?
And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.
Er antwortete ihm: Du sollst den Herrn, deinen Gott, lieben mit ganzem Herzen, mit ganzer Seele und mit deinem ganzen Denken.
And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.
Ebenso wichtig ist das zweite: Du sollst deinen Nächsten lieben wie dich selbst.
On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.”
An diesen beiden Geboten hängt das ganze Gesetz und die Propheten.

saying, “What do you think about the Christ? Whose son is he?” They said to him, “The son of David.”
Was denkt ihr über den Christus? Wessen Sohn ist er? Sie antworteten ihm: Der Sohn Davids.
He said to them, “How is it then that David, in the Spirit, calls him Lord, saying,
Er sagte zu ihnen: Wie kann ihn dann David im Geist Herr nennen? Denn er sagt:
“‘The Lord said to my Lord,
“Sit at my right hand,
until I put your enemies under your feet”’?
“Sit at my right hand,
until I put your enemies under your feet”’?
Der Herr sprach zu meinem Herrn: Setze dich mir zur Rechten, bis ich dir deine Feinde unter die Füße lege.
If then David calls him Lord, how is he his son?”
Wenn ihn also David Herr nennt, wie kann er dann sein Sohn sein?
