Greeting

Paul, a servanta of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ, for the sake of the faith of God’s elect and their knowledge of the truth, which accords with godliness,

Paulus, Knecht Gottes und Apostel Jesu Christi, gemäß dem Glauben der Auserwählten Gottes und der Erkenntnis der Wahrheit, die der Frömmigkeit entspricht,

in hope of eternal life, which God, who never lies, promised before the ages beganb

in der Hoffnung auf das ewige Leben, das Gott, der nicht lügt, schon vor ewigen Zeiten verheißen hat.

and at the proper time manifested in his wordc through the preaching with which I have been entrusted by the command of God our Savior;

Zur vorherbestimmten Zeit aber hat er sein Wort offenbart durch die Verkündigung, mit der ich durch den Auftrag Gottes, unseres Retters, betraut worden bin.

To Titus, my true child in a common faith:
Grace and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Savior.

An Titus, sein rechtmäßiges Kind, aufgrund des gemeinsamen Glaubens: Gnade und Friede von Gott, dem Vater, und Christus Jesus, unserem Retter.

Qualifications for Elders

This is why I left you in Crete, so that you might put what remained into order, and appoint elders in every town as I directed you —

Ich habe dich in Kreta deswegen zurückgelassen, damit du das, was noch zu tun ist, zu Ende führst und in den einzelnen Städten Älteste einsetzt, wie ich dir aufgetragen habe,

if anyone is above reproach, the husband of one wife,d and his children are believerse and not open to the charge of debauchery or insubordination.

wenn einer unbescholten und Mann einer einzigen Frau ist, mit gläubigen Kindern, die nicht unter dem Vorwurf der Liederlichkeit stehen oder ungehorsam sind.

For an overseer,f as God’s steward, must be above reproach. He must not be arrogant or quick-tempered or a drunkard or violent or greedy for gain,

Denn der Bischof muss unbescholten sein als Haushalter Gottes, nicht überheblich und jähzornig, kein Trinker, nicht gewalttätig, nicht habgierig,

but hospitable, a lover of good, self-controlled, upright, holy, and disciplined.

sondern gastfreundlich, das Gute liebend; besonnen, gerecht, fromm und beherrscht,

He must hold firm to the trustworthy word as taught, so that he may be able to give instruction in soundg doctrine and also to rebuke those who contradict it.

einer, der sich an das zuverlässige Wort hält, das der Lehre entspricht, damit er in der Lage ist, in der gesunden Lehre zu unterweisen und die Widersprechenden zu überführen.

For there are many who are insubordinate, empty talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision party.h

Denn es gibt viele Ungehorsame, Schwätzer und die sich nicht fügen wollen, besonders die aus der Beschneidung.

They must be silenced, since they are upsetting whole families by teaching for shameful gain what they ought not to teach.

Ihnen muss man den Mund stopfen, denn aus übler Gewinnsucht zerstören sie ganze Familien mit ihren falschen Lehren.

One of the Cretans,i a prophet of their own, said, “Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons.”j

Einer von ihnen hat als ihr eigener Prophet gesagt: Kreter sind immer Lügner, wilde Tiere, faule Bäuche.

This testimony is true. Therefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith,

Unser Zeugnis ist wahr. Darum weise sie streng zurecht, damit sie im Glauben gesund werden

not devoting themselves to Jewish myths and the commands of people who turn away from the truth.

und sich nicht mehr an jüdische Fabeleien halten und an Gebote von Menschen, die sich von der Wahrheit abwenden!

To the pure, all things are pure, but to the defiled and unbelieving, nothing is pure; but both their minds and their consciences are defiled.

Für die Reinen ist alles rein; für die Unreinen und Ungläubigen aber ist nichts rein, sogar ihr Denken und ihr Gewissen sind unrein.

They profess to know God, but they deny him by their works. They are detestable, disobedient, unfit for any good work.

Sie beteuern, Gott zu kennen, durch ihr Tun aber verleugnen sie ihn; es sind abscheuliche und ungehorsame Menschen, zu jeder guten Tat unbrauchbar.
