The Fall of Babylon

After this I saw another angel coming down from heaven, having great authority, and the earth was made bright with his glory.

Потім побачив я іншого Ангела, який спускався з Небес. І була у нього велика сила, а земля освітилася Славою його.

2

And he called out with a mighty voice,
“Fallen, fallen is Babylon the great!
She has become a dwelling place for demons,
a haunt for every unclean spirit,
a haunt for every unclean bird,
a haunt for every unclean and detestable beast.

Він вигукнув могутнім голосом:
«Упав! Упав великий Вавилон,[31] розпусниця велика! Стала вона притулком демонів, оселею всіляких злих духів, нечистих птахів і огидних тварин.

3

For all nations have drunka
the wine of the passion of her sexual immorality,
and the kings of the earth have committed immorality with her,
and the merchants of the earth have grown rich from the power of her luxurious living.”

Бо напоїла всі народи вином Божої люті за її розпусту. Царі земні чинили з нею перелюб, а купці всього світу багатіли з великої розкоші її».

Then I heard another voice from heaven saying,
“Come out of her, my people,
lest you take part in her sins,
lest you share in her plagues;

Тоді я почув інший голос, що линув з Небес. І мовив він:
«Народе мій, виходь із міста цього, аби не бути співучасником її гріхів, та не постраждати від того жахливого покарання, яке буде наслане на неї.

for her sins are heaped high as heaven,
and God has remembered her iniquities.

Бо неба досягли гріхи її, та Бог не забув усі її гріховні вчинки.

6

Pay her back as she herself has paid back others,
and repay her double for her deeds;
mix a double portion for her in the cup she mixed.

Відплатіть їй, розпусниці, за те, як вона зазвичай поводилася з вами, відплатіть їй вдвічі за те, що вона наробила. І келих вина приготуйте їй, міцнішого удвоє, аніж був той, що готувала вона вам.

As she glorified herself and lived in luxury,
so give her a like measure of torment and mourning,
since in her heart she says,
‘I sit as a queen,
I am no widow,
and mourning I shall never see.’

Дайте їй стільки страждань і горя, скільки мала вона слави й розкоші. Вона ж сама собі говорить: „Сиджу собі царицею. Я не вдова і горя я не знатиму ніколи”.

For this reason her plagues will come in a single day,
death and mourning and famine,
and she will be burned up with fire;
for mighty is the Lord God who has judged her.”

За все те в день один впадуть на неї біди: смерть, горе й голод. Вона горітиме у вогні, тому що Господь Бог, засудивший її — могутній».

And the kings of the earth, who committed sexual immorality and lived in luxury with her, will weep and wail over her when they see the smoke of her burning.

Земні царі, які з нею чинили розпусту й розкошували, будуть плакати й ридати за нею, як побачать дим від її пожежі.

10

They will stand far off, in fear of her torment, and say,
“Alas! Alas! You great city,
you mighty city, Babylon!
For in a single hour your judgment has come.”

Жах перед муками її триматиме їх подалі від неї. І скажуть вони:
«Горе, горе тобі, о велике місто! Могутнє місто Вавилон! Зненацька впала на тебе кара».

And the merchants of the earth weep and mourn for her, since no one buys their cargo anymore,

Купці всього світу теж заплачуть і затужать за цією блудницею, бо ніхто не купуватиме більше їхніх товарів:

12

cargo of gold, silver, jewels, pearls, fine linen, purple cloth, silk, scarlet cloth, all kinds of scented wood, all kinds of articles of ivory, all kinds of articles of costly wood, bronze, iron and marble,

ні золота, ні срібла, ні коштовного каміння, ані перлів, ні лляного, пурпурового, шовкового й багряного вбрання, ні всіх видів пахучого дерева, ні всіляких виробів із слонової кістки, ні дорогої деревини, ні бронзи, ні заліза, ані мармуру,

cinnamon, spice, incense, myrrh, frankincense, wine, oil, fine flour, wheat, cattle and sheep, horses and chariots, and slaves, that is, human souls.b

ні кориці, ні бальзаму, ні пахощів, ні мирру, ні вина, ні олії, ні доброго борошна і пшениці, ні худоби, ні овець, ні коней і возів, ані рабів чи людських душ! Вони голосно плакатимуть, кажучи:

“The fruit for which your soul longed
has gone from you,
and all your delicacies and your splendors
are lost to you,
never to be found again!”

«Вавилоне! Усе, чого ти прагнула, пропало. Вся розкіш і пишнота втрачені й ніколи не повернуться знов».

15

The merchants of these wares, who gained wealth from her, will stand far off, in fear of her torment, weeping and mourning aloud,

Купці, які розбагатіли торгівлею в тому місті, триматимуться осторонь, нажахані стражданнями Вавилона. І будуть вони голосити, сумувати й казатимуть:

16

“Alas, alas, for the great city
that was clothed in fine linen,
in purple and scarlet,
adorned with gold,
with jewels, and with pearls!

«Горе, горе великому місту-розпусниці! Була вона вбрана в тонке полотно, багряницю й порфіру. І прикраси на ній були із золота, коштовного каміння та перлів.

17

For in a single hour all this wealth has been laid waste.”
And all shipmasters and seafaring men, sailors and all whose trade is on the sea, stood far off

І все багатство це загинуло водночас!»
Всі керманичі і всі, хто плаває морем, і всі моряки, і всі ті, хто з моря живе, — усі трималися осторонь.

18

and cried out as they saw the smoke of her burning,
“What city was like the great city?”

18

Вони бачили дим її полум’я і вигукували: «Яке місто може з цим великим містом зрівнятися?«

19

And they threw dust on their heads as they wept and mourned, crying out,
“Alas, alas, for the great city
where all who had ships at sea
grew rich by her wealth!
For in a single hour she has been laid waste.

19

Тоді посипали вони голови свої попелом, плакали, тужили й вигукували:
«Горе, горе великому місту, великій розпусниці! Всі, хто мав кораблі на морі, збагатилися завдяки її багатству, але загинула вона водночас!

20

Rejoice over her, O heaven,
and you saints and apostles and prophets,
for God has given judgment for you against her!”

20

Радійте, о Небеса! Втішайтеся апостоли, пророки і всі святі люди Божі! Бо вчинив Бог суд над нею за все, що вона вам зробила!»

21

Then a mighty angel took up a stone like a great millstone and threw it into the sea, saying,
“So will Babylon the great city be thrown down with violence,
and will be found no more;

Тоді могутній Ангел підняв камінь завбільшки з жорно й кинув його в море зі словами:
«Так саме і велике місто Вавилон буде безжалісно скинуте, і вже ніхто його не побачить. Ніколи більше не повстане воно.

22

and the sound of harpists and musicians, of flute players and trumpeters,
will be heard in you no more,
and a craftsman of any craft
will be found in you no more,
and the sound of the mill
will be heard in you no more,

Ніколи там більше не гратимуть кіфари, не лунатимуть голоси співаків, сопілок і сурм! Ніколи не побачите там ніякого ремісника, і не почуєте звуків жорна.

23

and the light of a lamp
will shine in you no more,
and the voice of bridegroom and bride
will be heard in you no more,
for your merchants were the great ones of the earth,
and all nations were deceived by your sorcery.

Ніколи не засвітиться свічник. Й ніхто ніколи не почує сміху молодят. Купці твої були сильними світу цього. І всі народи були обдурені твоїм чаклунством.

24

And in her was found the blood of prophets and of saints,
and of all who have been slain on earth.”

24

Ти, Вавилоне, повинна у смерті пророків, а також святих людей Божих і всіх, хто був убитий на землі».
