And there was a man in Maon whose business was in Carmel. The man was very rich; he had three thousand sheep and a thousand goats. He was shearing his sheep in Carmel.

Now the name of the man was Nabal, and the name of his wife Abigail. The woman was discerning and beautiful, but the man was harsh and badly behaved; he was a Calebite.
А ім'я́ тому чоловікові Нава́л, а ім'я жінці його Авіґа́їл. А жінка та була доброго розуму та вродли́ва, чоловік же той був жорсто́кий та злочинний, із роду Калева.
David heard in the wilderness that Nabal was shearing his sheep.
А Давид почув у пустині, що Навал стриже свою отару.
So David sent ten young men. And David said to the young men, “Go up to Carmel, and go to Nabal and greet him in my name.
І послав Давид десять хлопців. І сказав Давид до тих хлопців: „Вийдіть на Карме́л, і при́йдете до Навала й запитаєте його в моєму йменні про мир,
And thus you shall greet him: ‘Peace be to you, and peace be to your house, and peace be to all that you have.
та й скажете так братові моєму: І тобі мир, і дому твоєму мир, і, всьому, що твоє, мир!
I hear that you have shearers. Now your shepherds have been with us, and we did them no harm, and they missed nothing all the time they were in Carmel.
А тепер почув я, що в тебе стрижуть. Пастухи твої були з нами, — ми не кри́вдили їх, і нічого не пропало їм по всі дні перебува́ння їх на Кармелі.
Ask your young men, and they will tell you. Therefore let my young men find favor in your eyes, for we come on a feast day. Please give whatever you have at hand to your servants and to your son David.’”
Запитай своїх слуг, і вони розповідять тобі. І нехай зна́йдуть в оча́х твоїх милість мої хлопці, бо доброго дня ми прийшли. Дай же рабам своїм та синові своєму Давидові, що зна́йде рука твоя!“
When David’s young men came, they said all this to Nabal in the name of David, and then they waited.
І прийшли Давидові хлопці, і промовили до Навала, в імені Давида, усі ці слова́. І спини́лися.
And Nabal answered David’s servants, “Who is David? Who is the son of Jesse? There are many servants these days who are breaking away from their masters.
І відповів Навал Давидовим рабам, і сказав: „Хто такий Давид та хто Єссеїв син? Сьогодні намно́жилося рабів, що вириваються кожен від пана свого!
Shall I take my bread and my water and my meat that I have killed for my shearers and give it to men who come from I do not know where?”
І я візьму́ хліб свій і воду свою та зарізане, що нарізав я для своїх стрижіїв, та й дам лю́дям, яких не знаю, звідки то вони?“
So David’s young men turned away and came back and told him all this.
І Давидові хлопці пішли назад на свою дорогу, і вернулися, і прийшли, і розповіли́ йому всі ці слова́.
And David said to his men, “Every man strap on his sword!” And every man of them strapped on his sword. David also strapped on his sword. And about four hundred men went up after David, while two hundred remained with the baggage.
А Давид сказав до людей своїх: „Припережіть кожен меча свого!“ І припереза́ли кожен меча свого, і припереза́в і Давид свого меча. І вийшло за Давидом близько чотирьох сотень чоловіка, а дві сотні остались при реча́х.
But one of the young men told Abigail, Nabal’s wife, “Behold, David sent messengers out of the wilderness to greet our master, and he railed at them.

Yet the men were very good to us, and we suffered no harm, and we did not miss anything when we were in the fields, as long as we went with them.

They were a wall to us both by night and by day, all the while we were with them keeping the sheep.
Муром були вони над нами і вночі, і вдень повся́кчас, коли ми були з ними, як ми пасли отари.
Now therefore know this and consider what you should do, for harm is determined against our master and against all his house, and he is such a worthless man that one cannot speak to him.”
А тепер пізнай та побач, що́ зробиш, бо дозріло зло на нашого пана та на ввесь дім його. А він негідний, із ним не можна говорити“.
Тоді Авіґа́їл поспішно взяла́ двісті хлібів, і два бурдюки́ вина, і п'ятеро приготовлених з отари, і п'ять сеїв пряженого зе́рна, а сто — родзи́нок, та двісті — су́шених фіґ. І склала це на ослів.
And she said to her young men, “Go on before me; behold, I come after you.” But she did not tell her husband Nabal.
І сказала вона до своїх слуг: „Ідіть передо мною, а я ось піду́ за вами“.
And as she rode on the donkey and came down under cover of the mountain, behold, David and his men came down toward her, and she met them.
І сталося, як вона їхала на ослі й спускалася в гірсько́му укритті́, аж ось Давид та люди його сходять навпере́йми їй. І вона стрінула їх.
Now David had said, “Surely in vain have I guarded all that this fellow has in the wilderness, so that nothing was missed of all that belonged to him, and he has returned me evil for good.
А Давид, сказав: „Надармо ж пильнував я все, що належить тому чоловікові в пустині, і зо всього його нічого не пропало. Та він вернув мені злом за добро!
Так нехай зробить Бог Давидовим ворогам, і так нехай додасть, якщо я позоставлю до ра́нку зо всього належного йому бодай те, що мочиться до стіни!“
When Abigail saw David, she hurried and got down from the donkey and fell before David on her face and bowed to the ground.
А Авіґаїл побачила Давида, і поспішно зійшла з осла, і впала перед Давидом на обличчя своє, та й вклонилася до землі.
She fell at his feet and said, “On me alone, my lord, be the guilt. Please let your servant speak in your ears, and hear the words of your servant.
I впала вона до ніг йому та й сказала: „На мені самій, пане мій, ця провина! І дозволь говорити твоїй невільниці до ушей твоїх, а ти послухай слів своєї невільниці.
Нехай же пан мій не кладе свого серця на цього негідного чоловіка, на Навала, бо яке ім'я́ його, такий він: Нава́л ім'я́ йому́, і глупо́та з ним! А я, невільниця твоя, не бачила хлопців мого пана, що ти посилав.
Now then, my lord, as the Lord lives, and as your soul lives, because the Lord has restrained you from bloodguilt and from saving with your own hand, now then let your enemies and those who seek to do evil to my lord be as Nabal.
А тепер, мій пане, — як живий Господь і як жива душа твоя! — Господь стримає тебе, щоб ти не ввійшов до пролиття́ крови, і щоб рука твоя не допомогла в цьому тобі! А тепер нехай стануть, як Навал, вороги твої та ті, що шукають зла на пана мого!
And now let this present that your servant has brought to my lord be given to the young men who follow my lord.
А оце дару́нок, якого прине́сла твоя невільниця своєму панові, буде да́ний хлопцям, що служать моє́му панові.
Please forgive the trespass of your servant. For the Lord will certainly make my lord a sure house, because my lord is fighting the battles of the Lord, and evil shall not be found in you so long as you live.
Прости ж провину невільниці своєї, бо конче зробить Господь моєму панові вірний дім, бо пан мій прова́дить ві́йни Господні, і зло не буде зна́йдене в тобі за твоїх днів.
If men rise up to pursue you and to seek your life, the life of my lord shall be bound in the bundle of the living in the care of the Lord your God. And the lives of your enemies he shall sling out as from the hollow of a sling.
І хоч повстане хто гнати тебе, і шукати твоєї душі, то буде душа мого пана зв'я́зана у в'язці живих із Господом, Богом твоїм, а душу ворогів твоїх — нехай Він її кине, як із пра́щі!
І станеться, коли Господь зробить моєму панові все добре, що говорив про тебе, і настано́вить тебе володарем над Ізраїлем,
my lord shall have no cause of grief or pangs of conscience for having shed blood without cause or for my lord working salvation himself. And when the Lord has dealt well with my lord, then remember your servant.”
то це не буде тобі на спотика́ння та на споку́су серця мого пана, як коли б пролив ти надармо кров, і пан мій пімстився сам. А коли Господь зробить добро моєму панові, то ти згадаєш про свою невільницю!“
And David said to Abigail, “Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, who sent you this day to meet me!
І сказав Давид до Авіґа́їл: „Благослове́нний Господь, Бог Ізраїлів, що послав тебе на це навпроти мене!
Blessed be your discretion, and blessed be you, who have kept me this day from bloodguilt and from working salvation with my own hand!
І благословенний розум твій, і благословенна ти, що стримала мене цього дня, щоб я не пішов на пролиття́ крови, і щоб рука моя не відімстила за мене.
For as surely as the Lord, the God of Israel, lives, who has restrained me from hurting you, unless you had hurried and come to meet me, truly by morning there had not been left to Nabal so much as one male.”
Але — живий Господь, Бог Ізраїлів, що стримав мене зробити тобі зло, бо коли б ти була не поспішила, і не прийшла назустріч мені, то до світла ра́нку Навалові не зоставлено б навіть те, що мочиться до стіни!“
Then David received from her hand what she had brought him. And he said to her, “Go up in peace to your house. See, I have obeyed your voice, and I have granted your petition.”
І взяв Давид із руки її те, що вона прине́сла йому, а їй сказав: „Іди з миром до свого дому! Бачиш, — я послу́хався голосу твого, і простив тобі!“
And Abigail came to Nabal, and behold, he was holding a feast in his house, like the feast of a king. And Nabal’s heart was merry within him, for he was very drunk. So she told him nothing at all until the morning light.
І прийшла Авіґаїл до Навала, аж ось у нього прийняття́ в його домі, немов прийняття́ царське́! А Навалове серце було веселе в ньому, і він був дуже п'я́ний. І вона не розповіла́ йому нічого, — ані малого, ані великого аж до світла ра́нку.
In the morning, when the wine had gone out of Nabal, his wife told him these things, and his heart died within him, and he became as a stone.
І сталося, вранці, коли Навал ви́тверезився, то жінка його розповіла́ йому про цю справу. І завмерло йому серце в його сере́дині, і він став, як камінь.
And about ten days later the Lord struck Nabal, and he died.
І сталося днів через десять, і вра́зив Господь Навала, і той помер.
When David heard that Nabal was dead, he said, “Blessed be the Lord who has avenged the insult I received at the hand of Nabal, and has kept back his servant from wrongdoing. The Lord has returned the evil of Nabal on his own head.” Then David sent and spoke to Abigail, to take her as his wife.
І почув Давид, що Навал помер, і сказав: „Благословенний Госпо́дь, що розсудив справу обра́зи моєї від Навала, а раба Свого стримав від зла, — зло Навала звернув Господь на його го́лову!“ І Давид послав, і говорив про Авіґа́їл, щоб узяти її собі за жінку.
When the servants of David came to Abigail at Carmel, they said to her, “David has sent us to you to take you to him as his wife.”
І прийшли Давидові раби до Авіґа́їл на Карме́л, і промовляли до неї, говорячи: „Давид послав нас до тебе, щоб узяти тебе йому за жінку“.
And she rose and bowed with her face to the ground and said, “Behold, your handmaid is a servant to wash the feet of the servants of my lord.”
А вона встала, і вклонилася лицем до землі, та й сказала: „Ось твоя служни́ця готова стати невільницею, щоб мити но́ги рабів пана мого!“
And Abigail hurried and rose and mounted a donkey, and her five young women attended her. She followed the messengers of David and became his wife.
І Авіґаїл поспішно встала, і сіла на осла, а п'ятеро служанок її йшли при нога́х її. І пішла вона за Давидовими посланця́ми, та й стала йому за жінку.
David also took Ahinoam of Jezreel, and both of them became his wives.
А Ахіноам узяв Давид з Їзреелу, і вони оби́дві стали йому за жінок
