Jacob's Fear of Esau
And Jacob went on his way, and the angels of God met him.

Früh am Morgen stand Laban auf, küsste seine Söhne und Töchter und segnete sie. Dann kehrte er an seinen Ort zurück.
And when Jacob saw them, he said, This is God's host: and he called the name of that place Mahanaim.
Auch Jakob zog seines Weges. Da begegneten ihm Engel Gottes.
And Jacob sent messengers before him to Esau his brother unto the land of Seir, the country of Edom.
Als Jakob sie erblickte, sagte er: Das ist das Lager Gottes. Dem Ort gab er darum den Namen Mahanajim — Lager — .
And he commanded them, saying, Thus shall ye speak unto my lord Esau; Thy servant Jacob saith thus, I have sojourned with Laban, and stayed there until now:
Jakob sandte Boten vor sich her zu seinem Bruder Esau in das Land Seïr, in das Gebiet von Edom.
And I have oxen, and asses, flocks, and menservants, and womenservants: and I have sent to tell my lord, that I may find grace in thy sight.
Er trug ihnen auf: Ihr sollt Esau, meinem Herrn, sagen: So sagt dein Knecht Jakob: Bei Laban habe ich mich aufgehalten und bin bis jetzt geblieben.
And the messengers returned to Jacob, saying, We came to thy brother Esau, and also he cometh to meet thee, and four hundred men with him.
Ich habe Stiere, Esel, Schafe und Ziegen sowie Knechte und Mägde bekommen. Ich schicke nun meinem Herrn eine Nachricht, um dein Wohlwollen zu finden.
Then Jacob was greatly afraid and distressed: and he divided the people that was with him, and the flocks, and herds, and the camels, into two bands;
Die Boten kehrten zu Jakob zurück und berichteten: Als wir zu deinem Bruder Esau kamen, war auch er schon unterwegs zu dir. Vierhundert Mann hat er bei sich.
And said, If Esau come to the one company, and smite it, then the other company which is left shall escape.
Jakob fürchtete sich sehr und Angst ergriff ihn. Er teilte seine Leute, die Schafe und Ziegen, Rinder und Kamele auf zwei Lager auf
And Jacob said, O God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, the LORD which saidst unto me, Return unto thy country, and to thy kindred, and I will deal well with thee:
und sagte: Wenn Esau zu dem einen Lager kommt und es niedermacht, dann kann das andere Lager entkommen.
I am not worthy of the least of all the mercies, and of all the truth, which thou hast shewed unto thy servant; for with my staff I passed over this Jordan; and now I am become two bands.
Und Jakob sagte: Du Gott meines Vaters Abraham und Gott meines Vaters Isaak, HERR, du hast mir gesagt: Kehr in dein Land und zu deiner Verwandtschaft zurück; ich werde es dir gut gehen lassen.
Deliver me, I pray thee, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau: for I fear him, lest he will come and smite me, and the mother with the children.
Ich bin zu gering für all die Hulderweise und alle Treue, die du deinem Knecht erwiesen hast. Denn nur mit einem Stab habe ich den Jordan dort überschritten und jetzt sind aus mir zwei Lager geworden.
And thou saidst, I will surely do thee good, and make thy seed as the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude.
Entreiß mich doch der Hand meines Bruders, der Hand Esaus! Denn ich fürchte, dass er kommt und mich erschlägt, die Mutter mit den Kindern.
And he lodged there that same night; and took of that which came to his hand a present for Esau his brother;
Du hast doch gesagt: Ich will es dir sehr gut gehen lassen und will deine Nachkommen zahlreich machen wie den Sand am Meer, den man wegen der Menge nicht zählen kann.
Two hundred she goats, and twenty he goats, two hundred ewes, and twenty rams,
Er brachte dort jene Nacht zu. Dann stellte er von allem, was er gerade zur Hand hatte, ein Geschenk für seinen Bruder Esau zusammen:
Thirty milch camels with their colts, forty kine, and ten bulls, twenty she asses, and ten foals.
zweihundert Ziegen und zwanzig Böcke, zweihundert Mutterschafe und zwanzig Widder,
And he delivered them into the hand of his servants, every drove by themselves; and said unto his servants, Pass over before me, and put a space betwixt drove and drove.
dreißig säugende Kamele mit ihren Jungen, vierzig Kühe und zehn Stiere, zwanzig Eselinnen und zehn Esel.
And he commanded the foremost, saying, When Esau my brother meeteth thee, and asketh thee, saying, Whose art thou? and whither goest thou? and whose are these before thee?
Er übergab sie, jede Herde für sich, seinen Knechten und sagte zu ihnen: Zieht mir voraus und haltet zwischen den Herden Abstand!
Then thou shalt say, They be thy servant Jacob's; it is a present sent unto my lord Esau: and, behold, also he is behind us.
Dem ersten trug er auf: Wenn mein Bruder Esau dich trifft und dich fragt: Zu wem gehörst du, wohin gehst du und wem gehören diese da vor dir?,
And so commanded he the second, and the third, and all that followed the droves, saying, On this manner shall ye speak unto Esau, when ye find him.
dann sag: Deinem Knecht Jakob. Ein Geschenk ist es, gesandt an meinen Herrn, an Esau. Und siehe, er selbst kommt hinter uns her.
And say ye moreover, Behold, thy servant Jacob is behind us. For he said, I will appease him with the present that goeth before me, and afterward I will see his face; peradventure he will accept of me.
Auch dem zweiten und dritten, allen, die hinter den einzelnen Herden schritten, trug er auf: Redet ebenso mit Esau, wenn ihr ihn trefft!
So went the present over before him: and himself lodged that night in the company.
Sagt: Siehe, dein Knecht Jakob kommt schon hinter uns her. Denn Jakob sagte sich: Ich werde sein Angesicht besänftigen mit dem Geschenk, das vor meinem Angesicht hergeht. Danach werde ich sein Angesicht anschauen und vielleicht wird er dann mein Angesicht aufheben.
Jacob Wrestles with God
And he rose up that night, and took his two wives, and his two womenservants, and his eleven sons, and passed over the ford Jabbok.

Das Geschenk zog ihm also voraus, er aber brachte jene Nacht im Lager zu.
And he took them, and sent them over the brook, and sent over that he had.
In derselben Nacht stand er auf, nahm seine beiden Frauen, seine beiden Mägde sowie seine elf Kinder und durchschritt die Furt des Jabbok.
And Jacob was left alone; and there wrestled a man with him until the breaking of the day.
Er nahm sie und ließ sie den Fluss überqueren. Dann schaffte er alles hinüber, was ihm sonst noch gehörte.
And when he saw that he prevailed not against him, he touched the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacob's thigh was out of joint, as he wrestled with him.
Als er allein zurückgeblieben war, rang mit ihm ein Mann, bis die Morgenröte aufstieg.
And he said, Let me go, for the day breaketh. And he said, I will not let thee go, except thou bless me.
Als der Mann sah, dass er ihn nicht besiegen konnte, berührte er sein Hüftgelenk. Jakobs Hüftgelenk renkte sich aus, als er mit ihm rang.
And he said unto him, What is thy name? And he said, Jacob.
Er sagte: Lass mich los; denn die Morgenröte ist aufgestiegen. Er entgegnete: Ich lasse dich nicht los, wenn du mich nicht segnest.
And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed.
Er fragte ihn: Wie ist dein Name? Jakob, antwortete er.
And Jacob asked him, and said, Tell me, I pray thee, thy name. And he said, Wherefore is it that thou dost ask after my name? And he blessed him there.
Er sagte: Nicht mehr Jakob wird man dich nennen, sondern Israel — Gottesstreiter — ; denn mit Gott und Menschen hast du gestritten und gesiegt.
And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: for I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.
Nun fragte Jakob: Nenne mir doch deinen Namen! Er entgegnete: Was fragst du mich nach meinem Namen? Dann segnete er ihn dort.
And as he passed over Penuel the sun rose upon him, and he halted upon his thigh.
Jakob gab dem Ort den Namen Peniël — Gottes Angesicht — und sagte: Ich habe Gott von Angesicht zu Angesicht gesehen und bin doch mit dem Leben davongekommen.
