Cain and Abel
And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the LORD.

Adam schlief mit seiner Frau Eva, sie wurde schwanger und brachte einen Sohn zur Welt. »Mit der Hilfe des HERRN habe ich einen Sohn bekommen!«, rief sie aus. Darum nannte sie ihn Kain (»Gewinn«).
And she again bare his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.
Ihren zweiten Sohn nannte sie Abel. Die beiden wuchsen heran; Abel wurde ein Hirte, Kain ein Bauer.
And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the LORD.
Eines Tages nahm Kain etwas von dem Ertrag seines Feldes und brachte es dem HERRN als Opfer dar.
And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the LORD had respect unto Abel and to his offering:
Auch Abel wählte eine Gabe für Gott aus: Er schlachtete einige von den ersten Lämmern seiner Herde und opferte die besten Fleischstücke mitsamt dem Fett daran. Der HERR blickte freundlich auf Abel und nahm sein Opfer an,
But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell.
Kain und seinem Opfer hingegen schenkte er keine Beachtung. Darüber wurde Kain sehr zornig und starrte mit finsterer Miene vor sich hin.
And the LORD said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen?
»Warum bist du so zornig und blickst so grimmig zu Boden?«, fragte ihn der HERR.
If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him.
»Wenn du Gutes im Sinn hast, kannst du doch jedem offen ins Gesicht sehen. Wenn du jedoch Böses planst, dann lauert die Sünde schon vor deiner Tür. Sie will dich zu Fall bringen, du aber beherrsche sie!«
Cain Murders Abel
And Cain talked with Abel his brother: and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.

Kain forderte seinen Bruder auf: »Komm, wir gehen zusammen aufs Feld!« Als sie dort ankamen, fiel er über Abel her und schlug ihn tot.
And the LORD said unto Cain, Where is Abel thy brother? And he said, I know not: Am I my brother's keeper?
Da fragte der HERR: »Wo ist dein Bruder Abel?« »Woher soll ich das wissen?«, wich Kain aus. »Ist es etwa meine Aufgabe, ständig auf ihn aufzupassen?«
And he said, What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother's blood crieth unto me from the ground.
Aber Gott entgegnete: »Was hast du bloß getan? Das vergossene Blut deines Bruders schreit von der Erde zu mir!
And now art thou cursed from the earth, which hath opened her mouth to receive thy brother's blood from thy hand;
Darum bist du von nun an verflucht: Weil du deinen Bruder umgebracht und den Acker mit seinem Blut getränkt hast, musst du von diesem fruchtbaren Land fort.
When thou tillest the ground, it shall not henceforth yield unto thee her strength; a fugitive and a vagabond shalt thou be in the earth.
Wenn du ein Feld bebauen willst, wird es dir kaum noch Ertrag einbringen. Ruhelos musst du von Ort zu Ort ziehen!«
And Cain said unto the LORD, My punishment is greater than I can bear.
»Meine Strafe ist zu hart — ich kann sie nicht ertragen!«, erwiderte Kain.
Behold, thou hast driven me out this day from the face of the earth; and from thy face shall I be hid; and I shall be a fugitive and a vagabond in the earth; and it shall come to pass, that every one that findeth me shall slay me.
»Ach, Gott, du verstößt mich von dem Land, das ich zum Leben brauche. Noch dazu muss ich mich vor dir verstecken! Heimatlos werde ich von nun an umherirren, und wenn mich jemand findet, wird er mich umbringen!«
And the LORD said unto him, Therefore whosoever slayeth Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold. And the LORD set a mark upon Cain, lest any finding him should kill him.
»Damit dies nicht geschieht«, sagte der HERR, »lege ich Folgendes fest: Wer dich tötet, wird dafür siebenfach bestraft werden!« Er machte ein Zeichen an Kain, damit jeder, der ihm begegnete, wusste: Kain darf man nicht töten.
And Cain went out from the presence of the LORD, and dwelt in the land of Nod, on the east of Eden.
Dann verließ Kain die Nähe des HERRN und wohnte im Land Nod (»Land des ruhelosen Lebens«), östlich von Eden.
The Descendants of Cain

Als Kain mit seiner Frau schlief, wurde sie schwanger und brachte einige Zeit später einen Sohn zur Welt: Henoch. Kain baute eine Stadt und benannte sie nach ihm.
And unto Enoch was born Irad: and Irad begat Mehujael: and Mehujael begat Methusael: and Methusael begat Lamech.
Henoch hatte einen Sohn namens Irad, Irads Sohn war Mehujaël, dessen Sohn hieß Metuschaël, der war der Vater von Lamech.
And Lamech took unto him two wives: the name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other Zillah.
Lamech heiratete zwei Frauen: Ada und Zilla.
And Adah bare Jabal: he was the father of such as dwell in tents, and of such as have cattle.
Ein Sohn Adas war Jabal — von ihm stammen alle ab, die mit ihren Herden umherziehen und in Zelten wohnen.
And his brother's name was Jubal: he was the father of all such as handle the harp and organ.
Sein Bruder hieß Jubal — auf ihn gehen alle die zurück, die Laute und Flöte spielen.
And Zillah, she also bare Tubalcain, an instructer of every artificer in brass and iron: and the sister of Tubalcain was Naamah.
Auch Zilla bekam einen Sohn: Tubal-Kain; er war der Erste, der Geräte aus Bronze und Eisen herstellte. Seine Schwester hieß Naama.
And Lamech said unto his wives, Adah and Zillah, Hear my voice; ye wives of Lamech, hearken unto my speech: for I have slain a man to my wounding, and a young man to my hurt.
Lamech sagte zu seinen Frauen: »Ada und Zilla, meine Frauen, hört mir gut zu: Wenn ein Mann mich verwundet, erschlage ich ihn — ja, für eine einzige Strieme bringe ich ihn um!
If Cain shall be avenged sevenfold, truly Lamech seventy and sevenfold.
Wenn schon ein Mord an Kain siebenfach bestraft wird — für Lamech wird alles siebenundsiebzigmal gerächt!«
Seth and Enosh
And Adam knew his wife again; and she bare a son, and called his name Seth: For God, said she, hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel, whom Cain slew.

Adam und Eva bekamen noch einen Sohn. Eva nannte ihn Set (»Ersatz«). »Gott hat mir einen anderen Nachkommen geschenkt!«, sagte sie. »Er wird mir Abel ersetzen, den Kain erschlagen hat!«
