Jehoram Overcomes Moab's Revolt
Now Jehoram the son of Ahab began to reign over Israel in Samaria the eighteenth year of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, and reigned twelve years.

Joram, Ahabs Sohn, wurde König von Israel im 18. Regierungsjahr König Joschafats von Juda. Er regierte zwölf Jahre in Samaria.
And he wrought evil in the sight of the LORD; but not like his father, and like his mother: for he put away the image of Baal that his father had made.
Auch er tat, was dem HERRN missfiel, wenn auch nicht in dem Maße wie sein Vater und seine Mutter. Immerhin entfernte er die Säule, die sein Vater zu Ehren des Gottes Baal hatte aufstellen lassen.
Nevertheless he cleaved unto the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, which made Israel to sin; he departed not therefrom.
Doch Joram hielt weiter an dem Götzendienst fest, zu dem Jerobeam, der Sohn von Nebat, die Israeliten verführt hatte, und ließ sich durch nichts davon abbringen.
And Mesha king of Moab was a sheepmaster, and rendered unto the king of Israel an hundred thousand lambs, and an hundred thousand rams, with the wool.
Mescha, der König von Moab, besaß große Schafherden, und darum hatte er an den König von Israel immer Schafe als Tribut entrichtet: insgesamt 100.000 Lämmer und 100.000 ungeschorene Schafböcke.
But it came to pass, when Ahab was dead, that the king of Moab rebelled against the king of Israel.
Doch nach Ahabs Tod lehnte er sich gegen die Herrschaft der Israeliten auf und weigerte sich, weiter zu zahlen.
And king Jehoram went out of Samaria the same time, and numbered all Israel.
Da brach König Joram von Samaria auf und zog alle wehrfähigen Israeliten ein.
And he went and sent to Jehoshaphat the king of Judah, saying, The king of Moab hath rebelled against me: wilt thou go with me against Moab to battle? And he said, I will go up: I am as thou art, my people as thy people, and my horses as thy horses.
Zugleich sandte er Boten nach Juda zu König Joschafat und ließ ihm mitteilen: »Der König von Moab hat sich gegen uns aufgelehnt und weigert sich, weiterhin Tribut zu zahlen. Willst du zusammen mit mir gegen ihn kämpfen?« Joschafat antwortete: »Du kannst mit mir rechnen! Ich stelle dir meine Truppen und meine Pferde zur Verfügung.«
And he said, Which way shall we go up? And he answered, The way through the wilderness of Edom.
Dann wollte er wissen, welchen Weg sie nehmen würden. »Wir ziehen durch die edomitische Wüste!«, meldete Joram zurück.
So the king of Israel went, and the king of Judah, and the king of Edom: and they fetched a compass of seven days' journey: and there was no water for the host, and for the cattle that followed them.
So zogen der König von Israel und der König von Juda mit ihren Truppen los, und auch der König von Edom schloss sich ihnen an. Wie geplant schlugen sie den Weg durch die Wüste ein. Doch weil sie einen Umweg machten, konnten sie nach sieben Tagen kein Wasser mehr finden, weder für die Soldaten noch für die Tiere.
And the king of Israel said, Alas! that the LORD hath called these three kings together, to deliver them into the hand of Moab!
»Hätten wir nur diesen Feldzug nie unternommen!«, klagte der König von Israel. »Bestimmt hat uns der HERR bloß hierhergebracht, um uns dem König von Moab auszuliefern.«
But Jehoshaphat said, Is there not here a prophet of the LORD, that we may inquire of the LORD by him? And one of the king of Israel's servants answered and said, Here is Elisha the son of Shaphat, which poured water on the hands of Elijah.
Aber Joschafat fragte: »Ist denn kein Prophet des HERRN in der Nähe, durch den wir den HERRN befragen könnten?« »Doch«, antwortete ein Diener des Königs von Israel, »Elisa, der Sohn von Schafat, ist hier. Er war seinerzeit Elias Diener.«
And Jehoshaphat said, The word of the LORD is with him. So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat and the king of Edom went down to him.
»Dann ist er ein echter Prophet!«, sagte Joschafat, und sogleich gingen er, der König von Israel und der König von Edom zu Elisa.
And Elisha said unto the king of Israel, What have I to do with thee? get thee to the prophets of thy father, and to the prophets of thy mother. And the king of Israel said unto him, Nay: for the LORD hath called these three kings together, to deliver them into the hand of Moab.
Doch Elisa war abweisend: »Warum kommst du denn zu mir, König von Israel? Ich habe nichts mit dir zu schaffen! Geh doch zu den Propheten, die dein Vater und deine Mutter angeheuert haben!« »Nein«, erwiderte Joram, »denn es war der HERR, der uns hierhergeführt hat und uns nun dem König von Moab ausliefern will.«
And Elisha said, As the LORD of hosts liveth, before whom I stand, surely, were it not that I regard the presence of Jehoshaphat the king of Judah, I would not look toward thee, nor see thee.
Da lenkte Elisa ein: »Nur weil auch König Joschafat von Juda hier ist, gebe ich dir eine Antwort. Wäre er nicht da, würde ich dich nicht einmal ansehen, geschweige denn irgendetwas für dich tun! Das schwöre ich bei dem HERRN, dem allmächtigen Gott, dem ich diene.
But now bring me a minstrel. And it came to pass, when the minstrel played, that the hand of the LORD came upon him.
Und nun holt einen Mann, der Harfe spielen kann!« Während der Musiker spielte, sprach der HERR zu Elisa und gab ihm eine Botschaft für die Könige. Elisa rief:
And he said, Thus saith the LORD, Make this valley full of ditches.
»Hört, was der HERR euch befiehlt: ›Hebt in diesem trockenen Tal überall Gruben aus.
For thus saith the LORD, Ye shall not see wind, neither shall ye see rain; yet that valley shall be filled with water, that ye may drink, both ye, and your cattle, and your beasts.
Es wird zwar kein Wind aufkommen, und es wird auch nicht regnen, aber trotzdem wird dieses Tal sich mit Wasser füllen. Dann könnt ihr alle genug trinken, auch eure Pferde und das Vieh.‹
And this is but a light thing in the sight of the LORD: he will deliver the Moabites also into your hand.
Aber das ist noch nicht alles!«, fuhr Elisa fort. »Der HERR will euch noch mehr geben. Mit seiner Hilfe werdet ihr die Moabiter besiegen.
And ye shall smite every fenced city, and every choice city, and shall fell every good tree, and stop all wells of water, and mar every good piece of land with stones.
Ihre schönen und gut befestigten Städte werdet ihr in Schutt und Asche legen, alle wertvollen Bäume fällen, alle Quellen im Land zuschütten und die besten Felder mit Steinen verwüsten.«
And it came to pass in the morning, when the meat offering was offered, that, behold, there came water by the way of Edom, and the country was filled with water.
Am nächsten Morgen, etwa zur Zeit des Morgenopfers, waren die Gruben im Tal mit Wasser gefüllt. Es kam von den Bergen Edoms und überschwemmte die ganze Gegend.
And when all the Moabites heard that the kings were come up to fight against them, they gathered all that were able to put on armour, and upward, and stood in the border.
Inzwischen hatten die Moabiter erfahren, dass die drei Könige mit ihren Truppen ausgerückt waren. Alle wehrfähigen Männer — vom ältesten bis zum jüngsten — wurden einberufen und an die Grenze geschickt.
And they rose up early in the morning, and the sun shone upon the water, and the Moabites saw the water on the other side as red as blood:
Früh am Morgen zogen sie los zum Angriff. Im Licht der aufgehenden Sonne schimmerte das Wasser im Tal blutrot.
And they said, This is blood: the kings are surely slain, and they have smitten one another: now therefore, Moab, to the spoil.
»Das ist Blut!«, riefen die Moabiter. »Die drei Könige und ihre Soldaten haben sich gegenseitig umgebracht! Das gibt eine fette Beute!«
And when they came to the camp of Israel, the Israelites rose up and smote the Moabites, so that they fled before them: but they went forward smiting the Moabites, even in their country.
Doch als sie sich dem feindlichen Lager näherten, stürmten die Israeliten ihnen entgegen und schlugen sie in die Flucht. Dann verfolgten sie die Moabiter bis in ihr Land und brachten ihnen eine schwere Niederlage bei.
And they beat down the cities, and on every good piece of land cast every man his stone, and filled it; and they stopped all the wells of water, and felled all the good trees: only in Kirharaseth left they the stones thereof; howbeit the slingers went about it, and smote it.
Sie machten die moabitischen Städte dem Erdboden gleich. Immer wenn sie an einem fruchtbaren Feld vorbeikamen, warf jeder Soldat Steine darauf, bis schließlich alle Felder vom Schutt bedeckt waren. Die Quellen schütteten sie zu und fällten alle wertvollen Bäume. Am längsten konnte die Stadt Kir-Heres Widerstand leisten. Doch die Israeliten umzingelten sie und beschossen sie mit Steinschleudern.
And when the king of Moab saw that the battle was too sore for him, he took with him seven hundred men that drew swords, to break through even unto the king of Edom: but they could not.
Der König von Moab sah ein, dass er ohne fremde Hilfe verloren war. Darum versuchte er, mit 700 Soldaten den Belagerungsring zu durchbrechen, um zum König von Edom vorzudringen, doch ohne Erfolg.
Then he took his eldest son that should have reigned in his stead, and offered him for a burnt offering upon the wall. And there was great indignation against Israel: and they departed from him, and returned to their own land.
In seiner Verzweiflung ließ er seinen ältesten Sohn holen, den Thronfolger, und verbrannte ihn als Opfer auf der Stadtmauer. Darüber waren die Israeliten sehr empört. Sie hoben die Belagerung auf und kehrten nach Israel zurück.
