Knowest thou the time when the wild goats of the rock bring forth? or canst thou mark when the hinds do calve?

Canst thou number the months that they fulfil? or knowest thou the time when they bring forth?
Чи на місяці лічиш, що спо́внитись мусять, і ві́даєш час їх наро́дження,
They bow themselves, they bring forth their young ones, they cast out their sorrows.
коли прикляка́ють вони, випускають дітей своїх, і звільняються від болів по́роду?
Their young ones are in good liking, they grow up with corn; they go forth, and return not unto them.
Набираються сил їхні діти, на полі зростають, відхо́дять і більше до них не вертаються.
Who hath sent out the wild ass free? or who hath loosed the bands of the wild ass?
Хто пусти́в осла дикого вільним, і хто розв'язав ослу дикому пу́та,
Whose house I have made the wilderness, and the barren land his dwellings.
якому призначив Я степ його домом, а місцем його пробува́ння — соло́ну пустиню?
He scorneth the multitude of the city, neither regardeth he the crying of the driver.
Він сміється із га́ласу міста, не чує він крику пого́нича.
The range of the mountains is his pasture, and he searcheth after every green thing.
Що знахо́дить по го́рах, то паша його, і шукає він усього зеленого.
Will the unicorn be willing to serve thee, or abide by thy crib?
Чи захоче служити тобі однорі́г? Чи при я́слах твоїх ночуватиме він?
Canst thou bind the unicorn with his band in the furrow? or will he harrow the valleys after thee?
Чи ти одноро́га прив'я́жеш до його борозни́ поворо́ззям? Чи буде він боронува́ти за тобою долини?
Wilt thou trust him, because his strength is great? or wilt thou leave thy labour to him?
Чи повіриш йому через те, що має він силу велику, — і свою працю на нього попу́стиш?
Wilt thou believe him, that he will bring home thy seed, and gather it into thy barn?
Чи повіриш йому, що він ве́рне насіння твоє, і збере тобі тік?
Gavest thou the goodly wings unto the peacocks? or wings and feathers unto the ostrich?
Крило стру́севе радісно б'ється, чи ж крило це й пір'ї́на леле́ки?
Which leaveth her eggs in the earth, and warmeth them in dust,
Бо я́йця свої він на землю кладе́ та в поросі їх вигріва́є,
And forgetteth that the foot may crush them, or that the wild beast may break them.
і забува́, що нога може їх розчави́ти, а звір польови́й може їх розтопта́ти.
She is hardened against her young ones, as though they were not hers: her labour is in vain without fear;
Він жорстокий відно́сно дітей своїх, ніби вони не його, а що праця його може бути надаре́мна, того не боїться,
Because God hath deprived her of wisdom, neither hath he imparted to her understanding.
бо Бог учинив, щоб забув він про мудрість, і не наділив його розумом.
What time she lifteth up herself on high, she scorneth the horse and his rider.
А за ча́су надхо́ду стрільців ударяє він кри́льми повітря, — і сміється з коня та з його верхівця́!
Hast thou given the horse strength? hast thou clothed his neck with thunder?
Чи ти силу коне́ві даси, чи шию його ти зодя́гнеш у гриву?
Canst thou make him afraid as a grasshopper? the glory of his nostrils is terrible.
Чи ти зробиш, що буде скакати він, мов сарана́? Величне іржа́ння його страшеле́зне!
He paweth in the valley, and rejoiceth in his strength: he goeth on to meet the armed men.
Б'є ногою в долині та ті́шиться силою, іде він насупроти зброї,
He mocketh at fear, and is not affrighted; neither turneth he back from the sword.
— сміється з страху́ й не жахається, і не верта́ється з-перед меча,
The quiver rattleth against him, the glittering spear and the shield.
хоч дзво́нить над ним сагайда́к, ві́стря списо́ве та ра́тище!
He swalloweth the ground with fierceness and rage: neither believeth he that it is the sound of the trumpet.
Він із шале́ністю та лютістю землю ковтає, і не вірить, що чути гук рогу.
He saith among the trumpets, Ha, ha; and he smelleth the battle afar off, the thunder of the captains, and the shouting.
При кожному розі кричить він: „І-га!“ і винюхує зда́лека бій, грім гетьма́нів та крик.
Doth the hawk fly by thy wisdom, and stretch her wings toward the south?
Чи я́струб літає твоєю премудрістю, на пі́вдень простягує кри́ла свої?
Doth the eagle mount up at thy command, and make her nest on high?
Чи з твойо́го нака́зу орел підіймається, і мо́стить кубло́ своє на висоті?
She dwelleth and abideth on the rock, upon the crag of the rock, and the strong place.
На скелі заме́шкує він та ночує, на ске́льнім вершку́ та тверди́ні, —
From thence she seeketh the prey, and her eyes behold afar off.
ізвідти визо́рює ї́жу, дале́ко вдивляються очі його,
