Über dies alles habe ich nachgedacht, und ich habe erkannt: Auch der Rechtschaffene und Verständige ist bei allem, was er tut, von Gott abhängig. Der Mensch versteht nicht einmal, warum er liebt oder hasst; erst recht weiß er nicht, was auf ihn zukommt!
All things come alike to all: there is one event to the righteous, and to the wicked; to the good and to the clean, and to the unclean; to him that sacrificeth, and to him that sacrificeth not: as is the good, so is the sinner; and he that sweareth, as he that feareth an oath.
Am Ende trifft sie alle ein und dasselbe Schicksal, ob sie nun Gott gehorchen oder ihn missachten, ob sie Gutes tun und sich an die Reinheitsgebote halten oder nicht, ob sie Gott Opfer bringen oder es sein lassen. Dem Guten ergeht es genauso wie dem Sünder, dem, der schwört, ebenso wie dem, der den Schwur scheut.
This is an evil among all things that are done under the sun, that there is one event unto all: yea, also the heart of the sons of men is full of evil, and madness is in their heart while they live, and after that they go to the dead.
Es ist zum Verzweifeln, dass alle Menschen auf dieser Welt ein und dasselbe Schicksal erleiden! Ihr Leben lang sind sie verblendet, und ihr Herz ist voller Bosheit, bis sie schließlich sterben.
For to him that is joined to all the living there is hope: for a living dog is better than a dead lion.
Wer lebt, hat noch Hoffnung, denn ein lebendiger Hund ist besser dran als ein toter Löwe!
For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten.
Die Lebenden wissen wenigstens, dass sie sterben werden, die Toten aber wissen gar nichts. Sie haben keinen Lohn mehr zu erwarten, man erinnert sich nicht einmal mehr an sie.
Also their love, and their hatred, and their envy, is now perished; neither have they any more a portion for ever in any thing that is done under the sun.
Ihr Lieben, ihr Hassen, ihre Eifersucht — alles ist mit ihnen gestorben. Nie mehr werden sie beteiligt sein an dem, was auf der Welt geschieht.

Live joyfully with the wife whom thou lovest all the days of the life of thy vanity, which he hath given thee under the sun, all the days of thy vanity: for that is thy portion in this life, and in thy labour which thou takest under the sun.
Genieße das Leben mit der Frau, die du liebst, solange du dein vergängliches Leben führst, das Gott dir auf dieser Welt gegeben hat. Genieße jeden flüchtigen Tag, denn das ist der Lohn für deine Mühen.
Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest.
Wenn du etwas tust, dann sei mit vollem Einsatz bei der Sache! Denn im Totenreich, wohin auch du einmal gehen wirst, ist es vorbei mit allem Denken und Tun, dort gibt es weder Erkenntnis noch Weisheit.
I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favour to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all.
Ich habe beobachtet, wie es auf dieser Welt zugeht: Es sind nicht in jedem Fall die Schnellsten, die den Wettlauf gewinnen, oder die Stärksten, die den Krieg für sich entscheiden. Weisheit garantiert noch keinen Lebensunterhalt, Klugheit führt nicht immer zu Reichtum, und die Verständigen sind nicht unbedingt beliebt. Sie alle sind der Zeit und dem Zufall ausgeliefert.
For man also knoweth not his time: as the fishes that are taken in an evil net, and as the birds that are caught in the snare; so are the sons of men snared in an evil time, when it falleth suddenly upon them.
Kein Mensch weiß, wann seine Zeit gekommen ist. Wie Fische sich plötzlich im Netz verfangen, wie Vögel in die Falle geraten, so enden auch die Menschen: Der Tod ereilt sie, wenn sie es am wenigsten erwarten.

Noch etwas habe ich beobachtet — ein gutes Beispiel dafür, wie die Weisheit auf dieser Welt beurteilt wird:
There was a little city, and few men within it; and there came a great king against it, and besieged it, and built great bulwarks against it:
Da war eine kleine Stadt mit wenig Einwohnern. Ein mächtiger König zog mit seinem Heer gegen sie aus, schloss sie ein und schüttete ringsum einen hohen Belagerungswall auf.
Now there was found in it a poor wise man, and he by his wisdom delivered the city; yet no man remembered that same poor man.
In der Stadt lebte ein armer Mann, der war sehr weise. Er hätte die Stadt durch seine Weisheit retten können, aber niemand dachte an ihn.
Then said I, Wisdom is better than strength: nevertheless the poor man's wisdom is despised, and his words are not heard.
Da sagte ich mir: Zwar ist Weisheit wertvoller als Stärke, aber auf den Rat eines Armen sieht man bloß hinab; seine Worte beachtet man nicht.
The words of wise men are heard in quiet more than the cry of him that ruleth among fools.
Es ist besser, auf die bedächtigen Worte eines Weisen zu hören als auf das Geschrei eines Königs von Dummköpfen.
