If thou wilt return, O Israel, saith the LORD, return unto me: and if thou wilt put away thine abominations out of my sight, then shalt thou not remove.

Der HERR lässt dir verkünden: »Kehr um, Israel, komm zurück zu mir! Wirf deine abscheulichen Götzen weg und wende dich nicht länger von mir ab.
And thou shalt swear, The LORD liveth, in truth, in judgment, and in righteousness; and the nations shall bless themselves in him, and in him shall they glory.
Wenn du bei meinem Namen schwörst, sei aufrichtig, ehrlich und halte dich daran. Dann werden auch die anderen Völker einander in meinem Namen Segen wünschen und sich glücklich schätzen, mich zu kennen.
For thus saith the LORD to the men of Judah and Jerusalem, Break up your fallow ground, and sow not among thorns.
Ich, der HERR, sage zu den Bewohnern von Juda und Jerusalem: Fangt ganz neu an wie ein Bauer, der ein brachliegendes Feld zum ersten Mal wieder bestellt! Streut eure Saat auf fruchtbaren Boden und nicht unter die Dornen!
Circumcise yourselves to the LORD, and take away the foreskins of your heart, ye men of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem: lest my fury come forth like fire, and burn that none can quench it, because of the evil of your doings.
Ändert euch von Grund auf und wendet euch von ganzem Herzen mir zu! Wenn ihr nicht von euren falschen Wegen umkehrt, entbrennt mein Zorn wie ein Feuer, das niemand löschen kann.«
Disaster from the North
Declare ye in Judah, and publish in Jerusalem; and say, Blow ye the trumpet in the land: cry, gather together, and say, Assemble yourselves, and let us go into the defenced cities.

»Schlagt Alarm in Juda und in Jerusalem! Blast das Signalhorn überall im Land! Ruft, so laut ihr könnt: ›Sammelt euch und flieht in die befestigten Städte!‹
Set up the standard toward Zion: retire, stay not: for I will bring evil from the north, and a great destruction.
Stellt Wegweiser nach Zion auf! Lauft und bleibt nicht stehen! Denn aus dem Norden bringe ich, der Herr, schreckliches Unheil und Zerstörung über das Land.
The lion is come up from his thicket, and the destroyer of the Gentiles is on his way; he is gone forth from his place to make thy land desolate; and thy cities shall be laid waste, without an inhabitant.
Ein Löwe kommt aus seinem Versteck und geht auf Raubzug: Ganze Völker will er verschlingen. Ja, er verlässt sein Versteck, um euer Land zu verwüsten! Zerstört und entvölkert wird er eure Städte zurücklassen.
For this gird you with sackcloth, lament and howl: for the fierce anger of the LORD is not turned back from us.
Zieht Trauergewänder an, weint und klagt: ›Immer noch lastet der glühende Zorn des HERRN auf uns!‹
And it shall come to pass at that day, saith the LORD, that the heart of the king shall perish, and the heart of the princes; and the priests shall be astonished, and the prophets shall wonder.
Wenn das geschieht, werden der König und die führenden Männer allen Mut verlieren, die Priester werden entsetzt sein und die Propheten starr vor Schreck. Darauf gebe ich, der HERR, mein Wort!«
Then said I, Ah, Lord GOD! surely thou hast greatly deceived this people and Jerusalem, saying, Ye shall have peace; whereas the sword reacheth unto the soul.
»Ach, HERR, mein Gott«, rief ich, »du hast dieses Volk und die Einwohner von Jerusalem schlimm getäuscht! Frieden hast du ihnen versprochen, und nun sitzt ihnen das Messer an der Kehle!«
At that time shall it be said to this people and to Jerusalem, A dry wind of the high places in the wilderness toward the daughter of my people, not to fan, nor to cleanse,
Der Herr erwiderte: »Wenn es so weit ist, wird man den Einwohnern von Jerusalem und dem ganzen Volk zurufen: ›Ein Glutwind kommt von den kahlen Höhen in der Wüste!‹ Er wird meinem Volk direkt ins Gesicht blasen. Es ist kein Wind, mit dem man Spreu und Weizen voneinander trennen kann,
Even a full wind from those places shall come unto me: now also will I give sentence against them.
dazu ist er zu stark. Er kommt auf meinen Befehl. Jetzt werde ich persönlich mein Urteil über euch sprechen!
Behold, he shall come up as clouds, and his chariots shall be as a whirlwind: his horses are swifter than eagles. Woe unto us! for we are spoiled.
Ihr schreit: ›Seht! Der Feind rückt heran wie eine Gewitterfront! Seine Streitwagen brausen daher wie ein Wirbelsturm, seine Pferde sind schneller als Adler! Wir sind dem Untergang geweiht, wir sind verloren!‹
O Jerusalem, wash thine heart from wickedness, that thou mayest be saved. How long shall thy vain thoughts lodge within thee?
Jerusalem, reinige dein Herz von aller Bosheit, damit du gerettet wirst! Wie lange noch willst du Unheil ausbrüten?
For a voice declareth from Dan, and publisheth affliction from mount Ephraim.
Boten kommen aus der Stadt Dan und vom Bergland Ephraim. Sie bringen eine Schreckensnachricht:
Make ye mention to the nations; behold, publish against Jerusalem, that watchers come from a far country, and give out their voice against the cities of Judah.
›Meldet Jerusalem und den umliegenden Völkern: Aus einem fernen Land rückt ein Heer zur Eroberung heran!‹ Vor den Städten Judas werden sie das Kriegsgeschrei anstimmen,
As keepers of a field, are they against her round about; because she hath been rebellious against me, saith the LORD.
sich aufstellen und sie umringen wie Wächter, die ein Feld bewachen; denn dieses Volk hat sich gegen mich, den HERRN, aufgelehnt.
Thy way and thy doings have procured these things unto thee; this is thy wickedness, because it is bitter, because it reacheth unto thine heart.
Das alles habt ihr euch selbst zu verdanken, eure eigenen Taten und Irrwege haben es euch eingebracht. Nun bekommt ihr den Lohn für eure Bosheit und müsst spüren, wie bitter und schmerzlich es ist, mich zu verlassen!«

My bowels, my bowels! I am pained at my very heart; my heart maketh a noise in me; I cannot hold my peace, because thou hast heard, O my soul, the sound of the trumpet, the alarm of war.

Was sind das für Qualen! Ich winde mich vor Schmerzen, und das Herz klopft mir bis zum Hals. Ich kann nicht schweigen, denn ich höre das Signalhorn und das Kriegsgeschrei!
Destruction upon destruction is cried; for the whole land is spoiled: suddenly are my tents spoiled, and my curtains in a moment.
Man meldet eine Niederlage nach der anderen, das ganze Land ist schon verwüstet! Ganz plötzlich wurden unsere Zelte zerstört und ihre Decken zerfetzt.
How long shall I see the standard, and hear the sound of the trumpet?
Wie lange muss ich die Feldzeichen der Feinde noch sehen und ihre Signalhörner hören?
For my people is foolish, they have not known me; they are sottish children, and they have none understanding: they are wise to do evil, but to do good they have no knowledge.
Der Herr spricht: »Mein Volk ist töricht und verbohrt, sie wollen mich nicht kennen. Sie sind wie unverständige und dumme Kinder. Böses zu tun, damit kennen sie sich aus, aber wie man Gutes tut, das wissen sie nicht!«
I beheld the earth, and, lo, it was without form, and void; and the heavens, and they had no light.
Ich sah die Erde an — sie war leer und ohne Leben. Ich blickte zum Himmel empor — dort schien kein Licht.
I beheld the mountains, and, lo, they trembled, and all the hills moved lightly.
Ich schaute zu den Bergen hinüber — sie bebten, und alle Hügel schwankten.
I beheld, and, lo, there was no man, and all the birds of the heavens were fled.
Im ganzen Land sah ich keine Menschen mehr, selbst die Vögel waren fortgeflogen.
I beheld, and, lo, the fruitful place was a wilderness, and all the cities thereof were broken down at the presence of the LORD, and by his fierce anger.
Die einst fruchtbaren Felder waren eine trostlose Wüste, und die Städte lagen in Trümmern. Das hat der HERR getan in seinem glühenden Zorn.
For thus hath the LORD said, The whole land shall be desolate; yet will I not make a full end.
Er sprach: »Ich will dieses Land verwüsten — doch nicht ganz und gar!
For this shall the earth mourn, and the heavens above be black: because I have spoken it, I have purposed it, and will not repent, neither will I turn back from it.
Die Erde trauert, und der Himmel verfinstert sich. Denn ich, der Herr, habe den Befehl dazu gegeben und bereue es nicht. Mein Entschluss steht fest.
The whole city shall flee for the noise of the horsemen and bowmen; they shall go into thickets, and climb up upon the rocks: every city shall be forsaken, and not a man dwell therein.
Die Reiter und Bogenschützen stürmen mit lautem Geschrei heran, die Einwohner der Städte fliehen in die dichten Wälder und verstecken sich in Höhlen. Alle Städte sind verlassen und unbewohnt.
And when thou art spoiled, what wilt thou do? Though thou clothest thyself with crimson, though thou deckest thee with ornaments of gold, though thou rentest thy face with painting, in vain shalt thou make thyself fair; thy lovers will despise thee, they will seek thy life.
Aber du, Jerusalem, was machst du da? Deine Eroberer stehen schon vor der Tür, und du ziehst dein leuchtend rotes Festkleid an, hängst dir goldenen Schmuck um den Hals und schminkst deine Augen? Umsonst machst du dich schön! Deine Liebhaber haben dich satt, jetzt trachten sie dir nach dem Leben.«
For I have heard a voice as of a woman in travail, and the anguish as of her that bringeth forth her first child, the voice of the daughter of Zion, that bewaileth herself, that spreadeth her hands, saying, Woe is me now! for my soul is wearied because of murderers.
Da, ein Schrei wie von einer Frau, die zum ersten Mal in den Wehen liegt! Es ist die Stadt Zion. Sie ringt nach Luft, streckt Hilfe suchend ihre Hände aus und ruft: »Ich bin verloren! Sie bringen mich um!«
