Ehe der Pharao die Stadt Gaza eroberte, empfing der Prophet Jeremia vom HERRN eine Botschaft für die Philister:
Thus saith the LORD; Behold, waters rise up out of the north, and shall be an overflowing flood, and shall overflow the land, and all that is therein; the city, and them that dwell therein: then the men shall cry, and all the inhabitants of the land shall howl.
»So spricht der HERR: Seht, aus dem Norden droht eine Flut; das Wasser wird zum reißenden Strom, der über die Ufer tritt. Er überschwemmt das Land und die Felder, er reißt Städte und Menschen mit fort. Die Bewohner rufen um Hilfe, im ganzen Land schreien sie laut!
At the noise of the stamping of the hoofs of his strong horses, at the rushing of his chariots, and at the rumbling of his wheels, the fathers shall not look back to their children for feebleness of hands;
Denn sie hören Pferde galoppieren, Räder rasseln, Streitwagen herandonnern. Die Väter fliehen und sehen sich nicht mehr nach ihren Kindern um, die Angst hat sie gepackt!
Because of the day that cometh to spoil all the Philistines, and to cut off from Tyrus and Zidon every helper that remaineth: for the LORD will spoil the Philistines, the remnant of the country of Caphtor.
Der Tag ist gekommen, an dem das Land der Philister verwüstet wird; die letzten Verbündeten von Tyrus und Sidon werden ausgerottet. Ja, ich, der HERR, lösche die restlichen Philister aus, die einst von der Insel Kreta gekommen sind.
Baldness is come upon Gaza; Ashkelon is cut off with the remnant of their valley: how long wilt thou cut thyself?
Die Einwohner von Gaza sind verzweifelt und scheren sich den Kopf kahl, die Menschen in Aschkelon wurden alle umgebracht. Wie lange ritzt ihr euch vor Trauer die Haut blutig, ihr Nachkommen der Enakiter?
O thou sword of the LORD, how long will it be ere thou be quiet? put up thyself into thy scabbard, rest, and be still.
Ihr schreit: ›Ach, du Schwert des HERRN, wie lange willst du noch zustechen? Hör auf damit, kehr zurück in deine Scheide und lass uns endlich in Ruhe!‹
How can it be quiet, seeing the LORD hath given it a charge against Ashkelon, and against the sea shore? there hath he appointed it.
Doch wie kann das Schwert ruhen, wenn ich, der HERR, ihm einen Auftrag gegeben habe? Ich selbst habe ihm befohlen, Aschkelon und das Gebiet an der Küste zu zerstören!«
