He hath led me, and brought me into darkness, but not into light.
Voller Zorn hat er mich fortgejagt und immer tiefer in die Finsternis getrieben.
Surely against me is he turned; he turneth his hand against me all the day.
Gegen mich sind seine Hiebe gerichtet, den ganzen Tag trifft mich seine strafende Hand.

Davon bin ich abgemagert und krank geworden; all meine Knochen hat er mir zerschlagen.
He hath builded against me, and compassed me with gall and travail.
Bitteres Leid und Trauer haben mich überwältigt, Gott selbst hat mich darin eingeschlossen.

In völliger Dunkelheit lässt er mich zurück, als wäre ich schon lange tot.

Also when I cry and shout, he shutteth out my prayer.

Was Frieden und Glück ist, weiß ich nicht mehr. Du, Herr, hast mir alles genommen.

Meine Not ist groß, ich habe keine Heimat mehr. Schon der Gedanke daran macht mich bitter und krank.
My soul hath them still in remembrance, and is humbled in me.
Und doch muss ich ständig daran denken und bin vor lauter Grübeln am Boden zerstört.«

Aber eine Hoffnung bleibt mir noch, an ihr halte ich trotz allem fest:

Die Güte des HERRN hat kein Ende, sein Erbarmen hört niemals auf,

Darum setze ich meine Hoffnung auf ihn, der HERR ist alles, was ich brauche.

Darum ist es das Beste, geduldig zu sein und auf die Hilfe des HERRN zu warten.

Und es ist gut für einen Menschen, wenn er schon früh lernt, Schweres zu tragen.

Wenn Gott ihm die Last auferlegt, soll er es annehmen und nicht aufbegehren.
He putteth his mouth in the dust; if so be there may be hope.
Demütig beuge er sich tief in den Staub, vielleicht gibt es ja noch Hoffnung für ihn.

Wenn man ihn schlägt, soll er die Wange hinhalten und die Demütigung still ertragen.

Denn wenn der Herr einen Menschen verstößt, dann tut er es nicht für immer und ewig.
But though he cause grief, yet will he have compassion according to the multitude of his mercies.
Er lässt ihn zwar leiden, aber erbarmt sich auch wieder, denn seine Gnade und Liebe ist groß.
For he doth not afflict willingly nor grieve the children of men.
Wenn er strafen muss, hat er keine Freude daran, sondern das Leid seiner Kinder schmerzt ihn auch selbst.

Es gibt so viel Unrecht in diesem Land: Die Gefangenen werden mit Füßen getreten,
To turn aside the right of a man before the face of the most High,
vor den Augen des höchsten Gottes bringt man Unschuldige um ihr Recht.
To subvert a man in his cause, the Lord approveth not.
Vor Gericht wird gelogen und betrogen — meint ihr etwa, der Herr sieht das nicht?

Wer kann etwas geschehen lassen, wenn der Herr es nicht befiehlt?
Out of the mouth of the most High proceedeth not evil and good?
Alles Glück haben wir ihm zu verdanken, und genauso kommt das Unglück aus seiner Hand.
Wherefore doth a living man complain, a man for the punishment of his sins?
Solange wir leben, brauchen wir uns nicht zu beklagen. Sind es nicht unsere Sünden, für die Gott uns bestraft?

Kommt, wir wollen unser Leben sorgfältig prüfen und wieder zurückkehren zum HERRN!
Let us lift up our heart with our hands unto God in the heavens.
Ihm wollen wir unsere Herzen öffnen, zu unserem Gott im Himmel die Hände erheben:
We have transgressed and have rebelled: thou hast not pardoned.
»Herr, wir haben gesündigt und dir die Treue gebrochen — und das hast du uns nicht vergeben!

Stattdessen hast du dich in Zorn gehüllt, du hast uns verfolgt und erbarmungslos getötet!

In einer dichten Wolke hast du dich verborgen, kein Gebet konnte mehr zu dir durchdringen.
Thou hast made us as the offscouring and refuse in the midst of the people.
Du hast dafür gesorgt, dass die Völker uns wie Dreck behandeln, zum Abschaum der Menschheit sind wir geworden.

Fear and a snare is come upon us, desolation and destruction.
Angst und Schrecken haben uns gepackt, überall erlebten wir Zerstörung und Tod.«

Thou hast heard my voice: hide not thine ear at my breathing, at my cry.
deine Ohren nicht vor mir zu verschließen. Und wirklich: Du hast mich erhört!
Thou drewest near in the day that I called upon thee: thou saidst, Fear not.
Als ich rief, kamst du mir ganz nahe und sprachst: »Fürchte dich nicht!«

Sieh sie dir an und hör doch die Spottlieder, die sie von früh bis spät über mich singen!
