Da empfing Jona wieder eine Botschaft vom HERRN. Zum zweiten Mal sprach Gott zu ihm:
Arise, go unto Nineveh, that great city, and preach unto it the preaching that I bid thee.
»Geh in die große und mächtige Stadt Ninive und verkünde den Menschen dort, was ich dir auftrage!«
So Jonah arose, and went unto Nineveh, according to the word of the LORD. Now Nineveh was an exceeding great city of three days' journey.
Diesmal machte sich Jona auf den Weg nach Ninive, wie der HERR es ihm befohlen hatte. Die Stadt war so groß, dass man drei Tage brauchte, um sie zu durchqueren.
And Jonah began to enter into the city a day's journey, and he cried, and said, Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown.

Da glaubten die Einwohner von Ninive an Gott. Sie beschlossen zu fasten, und alle, von den einflussreichsten bis zu den einfachen Leuten, zogen als Zeichen ihrer Reue Kleider aus grobem Stoff an.
For word came unto the king of Nineveh, and he arose from his throne, and he laid his robe from him, and covered him with sackcloth, and sat in ashes.
Auch dem König von Ninive war Jonas Botschaft ausgerichtet worden. Er stieg von seinem Thron und legte sein Herrschergewand ab. Stattdessen zog er ein Bußgewand an und setzte sich in die Asche.
And he caused it to be proclaimed and published through Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles, saying, Let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock, taste any thing: let them not feed, nor drink water:
In der ganzen Stadt ließ er ausrufen: »Hört, was der König und die führenden Männer anordnen: Niemand darf etwas essen oder trinken, weder die Menschen noch die Rinder, Schafe und Ziegen.
But let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and cry mightily unto God: yea, let them turn every one from his evil way, and from the violence that is in their hands.
Menschen und Tiere sollen Tücher aus grobem Stoff tragen und mit aller Macht zu Gott schreien. Jeder muss von seinen falschen Wegen umkehren! Keiner darf dem anderen mehr Unrecht tun!
Who can tell if God will turn and repent, and turn away from his fierce anger, that we perish not?
Vielleicht lässt sich Gott ja noch umstimmen und hat Erbarmen mit uns; vielleicht wendet er seinen glühenden Zorn von uns ab, und wir kommen mit dem Leben davon.«
And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God repented of the evil, that he had said that he would do unto them; and he did it not.
Gott sah, dass die Menschen von ihren falschen Wegen umkehrten. Da taten sie ihm leid, und er ließ das angedrohte Unheil nicht über sie hereinbrechen.
