Kehrt um, bevor das eintrifft, was der HERR sich vorgenommen hat! Es wird höchste Zeit für euch! Bald ist der Tag da, an dem der glühende Zorn des HERRN euch trifft!

Ihr anderen aber, die ihr dem HERRN dient und nach seinen Geboten lebt: Bleibt bei ihm und strebt nach Gerechtigkeit und Demut! Vielleicht werdet ihr verschont, wenn sich der Zorn des HERRN über sein Volk entlädt.

Gaza wird zu einer menschenleeren Stadt, Aschkelon wird verwüstet. Die Einwohner von Aschdod werden am helllichten Tag verschleppt, und auch Ekron macht man dem Erdboden gleich.

und abends schlagen sie in den Ruinen von Aschkelon ihr Lager auf. Das ganze Land der Philister gehört dann den Überlebenden von Juda.« Ja, der HERR, ihr Gott, wird sich über die Judäer erbarmen und ihr Schicksal wieder zum Guten wenden!

Gott sagt: »Ich habe gehört, wie die Moabiter mein Volk verspotten und verhöhnen. Die Ammoniter prahlen damit, dass sie Israels Gebiet erobern werden.
Therefore as I live, saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, Surely Moab shall be as Sodom, and the children of Ammon as Gomorrah, even the breeding of nettles, and saltpits, and a perpetual desolation: the residue of my people shall spoil them, and the remnant of my people shall possess them.
Darum schwöre ich, der HERR, der allmächtige Gott Israels, so wahr ich lebe: Moab und Ammon wird es wie Sodom und Gomorra ergehen: Für alle Zeiten soll ihr Gebiet zu einer Wüste voller Salzgruben werden, von Unkraut überwuchert. Die Überlebenden meines Volkes werden die Moabiter und Ammoniter ausplündern und ihr Land in Besitz nehmen.«

Doch er wird sie das Fürchten lehren, wenn er allen Göttern der Erde ein Ende bereitet. Schließlich wird jedes Volk in seinem Land den HERRN anbeten, selbst die Bewohner der fernsten Inseln.

Dem Norden wird es nicht besser ergehen. Drohend erhebt Gott seine Hand, um Assyrien zu vernichten. Er wird die Hauptstadt Ninive in Trümmer legen, sie so öde und menschenleer machen wie die Wüste.

Mitten in der Stadt lagern dann ganze Herden von Tieren, Wüstenkauz und Eule hausen nachts zwischen den zerborstenen Säulen. Aus den Fenstern krächzen Vögel, die Türschwellen sind mit Trümmern übersät, und die Täfelung aus Zedernholz liegt abgerissen auf dem Boden.

Das also wird aus der stolzen Stadt, deren Einwohner sich in Sicherheit wähnten und dachten: »Es gibt keine Stadt wie unsere!« Zur Wüste wird sie, zum Lagerplatz für wilde Tiere! Wer an ihr vorbeigeht, verhöhnt sie und schüttelt entsetzt den Kopf.
