Im 1. Monat des Jahres kam das Volk Israel in die Wüste Zin und schlug das Lager in Kadesch auf. Dort starb Mirjam und wurde begraben.
Water from the Rock
And there was no water for the congregation: and they gathered themselves together against Moses and against Aaron.

In Kadesch fanden die Israeliten kein Wasser. Darum gingen sie alle gemeinsam zu Mose und Aaron
And the people chode with Moses, and spake, saying, Would God that we had died when our brethren died before the LORD!
und machten ihrem Unmut Luft: »Ach, wären wir doch auch ums Leben gekommen, als der HERR unsere Brüder sterben ließ!
And why have ye brought up the congregation of the LORD into this wilderness, that we and our cattle should die there?
Wozu habt ihr das Volk des HERRN in diese Wüste geführt? Doch nur, um uns und unser Vieh verdursten zu lassen!
And wherefore have ye made us to come up out of Egypt, to bring us in unto this evil place? it is no place of seed, or of figs, or of vines, or of pomegranates; neither is there any water to drink.
Warum habt ihr uns aus Ägypten geholt und an diesen schrecklichen Ort gebracht? Hier wächst nichts: kein Getreide, keine Feigen, keine Trauben und keine Granatäpfel. Nicht einmal Wasser gibt es!«
And Moses and Aaron went from the presence of the assembly unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, and they fell upon their faces: and the glory of the LORD appeared unto them.
Mose und Aaron verließen die versammelte Menge, gingen zum Eingang des heiligen Zeltes und warfen sich dort zu Boden. Da erschien ihnen der HERR in seiner Herrlichkeit.
Take the rod, and gather thou the assembly together, thou, and Aaron thy brother, and speak ye unto the rock before their eyes; and it shall give forth his water, and thou shalt bring forth to them water out of the rock: so thou shalt give the congregation and their beasts drink.
»Nimm deinen Stab! Ruf mit deinem Bruder Aaron das Volk vor dem Felsen dort zusammen! Vor ihren Augen sollt ihr zu dem Stein sprechen! Dann wird Wasser aus ihm herausfließen, und ihr könnt den Menschen und Tieren zu trinken geben.«
And Moses took the rod from before the LORD, as he commanded him.
Mose gehorchte und nahm den Stab, der im Heiligtum lag.
And Moses and Aaron gathered the congregation together before the rock, and he said unto them, Hear now, ye rebels; must we fetch you water out of this rock?
Gemeinsam mit Aaron versammelte er die Israeliten vor dem Felsen und rief: »Passt gut auf, ihr Starrköpfe! Sollen wir euch Wasser aus diesem Felsen holen?«
And Moses lifted up his hand, and with his rod he smote the rock twice: and the water came out abundantly, and the congregation drank, and their beasts also.
Er hob den Stab und schlug zweimal damit gegen das Gestein. Da strömte eine große Menge Wasser heraus. Das ganze Volk und alle Tiere konnten ihren Durst stillen.
And the LORD spake unto Moses and Aaron, Because ye believed me not, to sanctify me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore ye shall not bring this congregation into the land which I have given them.
Aber der HERR sprach zu Mose und Aaron: »Ihr habt mir nicht vertraut und mir nicht die Gelegenheit gegeben, mich vor dem Volk als der heilige und mächtige Gott zu erweisen. Stattdessen habt ihr euch selbst in den Mittelpunkt gestellt. Deshalb dürft ihr mein Volk nicht in das Land bringen, das ich ihnen geben werde.«
This is the water of Meribah; because the children of Israel strove with the LORD, and he was sanctified in them.
Von nun an nannte man die Quelle Meriba (»Vorwurf«), denn die Israeliten hatten hier dem HERRN Vorwürfe gemacht, und er hatte ihnen seine Heiligkeit und Macht gezeigt.
Edom Refuses Passage
And Moses sent messengers from Kadesh unto the king of Edom, Thus saith thy brother Israel, Thou knowest all the travail that hath befallen us:

Von Kadesch aus schickte Mose Boten zum König von Edom und ließ ihm sagen: »Wir Israeliten sind euer Brudervolk, darum hör uns an! Wie du weißt, haben wir viel Leid erlebt:
How our fathers went down into Egypt, and we have dwelt in Egypt a long time; and the Egyptians vexed us, and our fathers:
Unsere Vorfahren siedelten nach Ägypten über und lebten dort lange Zeit. Aber die Ägypter unterdrückten uns.
And when we cried unto the LORD, he heard our voice, and sent an angel, and hath brought us forth out of Egypt: and, behold, we are in Kadesh, a city in the uttermost of thy border:
Da schrien wir zum HERRN um Hilfe, und er erhörte uns. Er sandte einen Engel und befreite uns aus Ägypten. Nun sind wir hier, bei der Stadt Kadesch an eurer Grenze.
Let us pass, I pray thee, through thy country: we will not pass through the fields, or through the vineyards, neither will we drink of the water of the wells: we will go by the king's high way, we will not turn to the right hand nor to the left, until we have passed thy borders.
Lass uns bitte durch euer Land ziehen. Wir werden keinen Acker und keinen Weinberg betreten, ja, nicht einmal Wasser aus euren Brunnen trinken. Wir versprechen, dass wir auf der großen Straße bleiben und sie an keiner Stelle verlassen, bis wir euer Gebiet durchquert haben.«
And Edom said unto him, Thou shalt not pass by me, lest I come out against thee with the sword.
Die Edomiter aber antworteten: »Ihr werdet nicht durch unser Land ziehen, sonst kommen wir euch mit Schwertern bewaffnet entgegen!«
And the children of Israel said unto him, We will go by the high way: and if I and my cattle drink of thy water, then I will pay for it: I will only, without doing any thing else, go through on my feet.
Die Israeliten versicherten noch einmal: »Wir wollen wirklich nur die Straße durch euer Land benutzen. Und wenn wir oder unser Vieh von eurem Wasser trinken, dann werden wir es bezahlen. Wir möchten nur durch euer Land hindurch, weiter nichts.«
And he said, Thou shalt not go through. And Edom came out against him with much people, and with a strong hand.
Doch die Edomiter ließen nicht mit sich reden. Im Gegenteil: Sie zogen den Israeliten mit einer großen Streitmacht entgegen.
Thus Edom refused to give Israel passage through his border: wherefore Israel turned away from him.
Weil die Edomiter den Weg nicht freigeben wollten, schlugen die Israeliten eine andere Richtung ein.
The Death of Aaron
And the children of Israel, even the whole congregation, journeyed from Kadesh, and came unto mount Hor.

Sie brachen von Kadesch auf und zogen an der Grenze Edoms entlang zum Berg Hor. Dort sprach der HERR zu Mose und Aaron:
Aaron shall be gathered unto his people: for he shall not enter into the land which I have given unto the children of Israel, because ye rebelled against my word at the water of Meribah.
»An diesem Ort wird Aaron sterben. Er soll nicht in das Land kommen, das ich den Israeliten geben werde, denn ihr habt an der Quelle Meriba gegen meine Anweisung gehandelt.«
Take Aaron and Eleazar his son, and bring them up unto mount Hor:
Dann sagte der Herr zu Mose: »Steig mit Aaron und seinem Sohn Eleasar auf den Berg Hor!
And strip Aaron of his garments, and put them upon Eleazar his son: and Aaron shall be gathered unto his people, and shall die there.
Nimm Aaron dort sein Priestergewand ab und zieh es seinem Sohn an! Danach wird Aaron sterben und im Tod mit seinen Vorfahren vereint.«
And Moses did as the LORD commanded: and they went up into mount Hor in the sight of all the congregation.
Mose gehorchte und stieg mit den beiden vor den Augen der Israeliten auf den Berg Hor.
And Moses stripped Aaron of his garments, and put them upon Eleazar his son; and Aaron died there in the top of the mount: and Moses and Eleazar came down from the mount.
Als sie auf dem Gipfel angekommen waren, nahm er Aaron das Gewand des Hohenpriesters ab und zog es Eleasar an. Dann starb Aaron. Mose und Eleasar kamen ohne ihn zurück.
