King James Bible

New Living Translation

  • Jesus' Teaching about Divorce

    And it came to pass, that when Jesus had finished these sayings, he departed from Galilee, and came into the coasts of Judaea beyond Jordan;
  • Discussion about Divorce and Marriage

When Jesus had finished saying these things, he left Galilee and went down to the region of Judea east of the Jordan River.
  • And great multitudes followed him; and he healed them there.
  • Large crowds followed him there, and he healed their sick.
  • The Pharisees also came unto him, tempting him, and saying unto him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause?
  • Some Pharisees came and tried to trap him with this question: “Should a man be allowed to divorce his wife for just any reason?”
  • And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female,
  • “Haven’t you read the Scriptures?” Jesus replied. “They record that from the beginning ‘God made them male and female.’a
  • And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh?
  • And he said, “‘This explains why a man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one.’b
  • Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.
  • Since they are no longer two but one, let no one split apart what God has joined together.”
  • They say unto him, Why did Moses then command to give a writing of divorcement, and to put her away?
  • “Then why did Moses say in the law that a man could give his wife a written notice of divorce and send her away?”c they asked.
  • He saith unto them, Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so.
  • Jesus replied, “Moses permitted divorce only as a concession to your hard hearts, but it was not what God had originally intended.
  • And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery.
  • And I tell you this, whoever divorces his wife and marries someone else commits adultery — unless his wife has been unfaithful.d
  • His disciples say unto him, If the case of the man be so with his wife, it is not good to marry.
  • Jesus’ disciples then said to him, “If this is the case, it is better not to marry!”
  • But he said unto them, All men cannot receive this saying, save they to whom it is given.
  • “Not everyone can accept this statement,” Jesus said. “Only those whom God helps.
  • For there are some eunuchs, which were so born from their mother's womb: and there are some eunuchs, which were made eunuchs of men: and there be eunuchs, which have made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven's sake. He that is able to receive it, let him receive it.
  • Some are born as eunuchs, some have been made eunuchs by others, and some choose not to marrye for the sake of the Kingdom of Heaven. Let anyone accept this who can.”
  • Jesus Blesses the Children

Then were there brought unto him little children, that he should put his hands on them, and pray: and the disciples rebuked them.

  • Jesus Blesses the Children

One day some parents brought their children to Jesus so he could lay his hands on them and pray for them. But the disciples scolded the parents for bothering him.
  • But Jesus said, Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven.
  • But Jesus said, “Let the children come to me. Don’t stop them! For the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to those who are like these children.”
  • And he laid his hands on them, and departed thence.
  • And he placed his hands on their heads and blessed them before he left.
  • The Rich Young Man

And, behold, one came and said unto him, Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life?

  • The Rich Man

Someone came to Jesus with this question: “Teacher,f what good deed must I do to have eternal life?”
  • And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments.
  • “Why ask me about what is good?” Jesus replied. “There is only One who is good. But to answer your question — if you want to receive eternal life, keepg the commandments.”
  • He saith unto him, Which? Jesus said, Thou shalt do no murder, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness,
  • “Which ones?” the man asked.
And Jesus replied: “‘You must not murder. You must not commit adultery. You must not steal. You must not testify falsely.
  • Honour thy father and thy mother: and, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
  • Honor your father and mother. Love your neighbor as yourself.’h
  • The young man saith unto him, All these things have I kept from my youth up: what lack I yet?
  • “I’ve obeyed all these commandments,” the young man replied. “What else must I do?”
  • Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me.
  • Jesus told him, “If you want to be perfect, go and sell all your possessions and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”
  • But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful: for he had great possessions.
  • But when the young man heard this, he went away sad, for he had many possessions.
  • Then said Jesus unto his disciples, Verily I say unto you, That a rich man shall hardly enter into the kingdom of heaven.
  • Then Jesus said to his disciples, “I tell you the truth, it is very hard for a rich person to enter the Kingdom of Heaven.
  • And again I say unto you, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.
  • I’ll say it again — it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the Kingdom of God!”
  • When his disciples heard it, they were exceedingly amazed, saying, Who then can be saved?
  • The disciples were astounded. “Then who in the world can be saved?” they asked.
  • But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.
  • Jesus looked at them intently and said, “Humanly speaking, it is impossible. But with God everything is possible.”
  • Then answered Peter and said unto him, Behold, we have forsaken all, and followed thee; what shall we have therefore?
  • Then Peter said to him, “We’ve given up everything to follow you. What will we get?”
  • And Jesus said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That ye which have followed me, in the regeneration when the Son of man shall sit in the throne of his glory, ye also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
  • Jesus replied, “I assure you that when the world is made newi and the Son of Manj sits upon his glorious throne, you who have been my followers will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
  • And every one that hath forsaken houses, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my name's sake, shall receive an hundredfold, and shall inherit everlasting life.
  • And everyone who has given up houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or property, for my sake, will receive a hundred times as much in return and will inherit eternal life.
  • But many that are first shall be last; and the last shall be first.
  • But many who are the greatest now will be least important then, and those who seem least important now will be the greatest then.k
